yeah if you think you may be removing the clamps down the road, something in between would be a good idea. i didn't put anything in there to protect the tremclad.

yeah you should be able to find a brake lever arm on ebay or somewhere for cheap if you're worried about cutting yours up. Once you get one you can make it look as good as you want with a sawzall or hacksaw and bench grinder. i left mine pretty crude because its not a big concern of mine...

if you're looking to avoid metal work, fiberglass is always an option. and then you can cut the edges of the pan to follow your frame rails. There are a bunch of threads on here about how to make a fiberglass seat, here is a couple pics of mine: Good luck and ask questions, lots of help...

I'm not 100% sure you could use frame clamps, but its worth considering. I used them to mount some rearsets on my 550 about a month ago and they've been working awesome. Here is a couple pics:

Hey that looks great! Not sure if you've tried it yet, but you could always drop the front an inch and mount your clip ons above the upper tree. that might make it more comfortable with the bars higher. I'd probably toss the chain guard too, but it looks good either way.
