If you use a regular screw, you can tighten it too tight and lock the brake when you pull the lever.

Fortunately I checked the brake before I was running at any significant speed.

Or leave it too loose and it falls out.

My dad bought a cheap grease gun last year and I finally found a use for it. After some reaserch I went to home Depot and got these

A lot of old fluid came out but I think I will be able to reuse the piston

I was hoping I could reuse the piston but it has some pitting. What do you guys think?

Still following. Keep the progress up!
I'm still moving forward but I lost my phone while on a skiing trip last week and posting has just become much more time consuming and difficult because i do not have a good camera. I am going to the seat upholsterer today after school to get a quote and ask how they want the pan formed so that there is no gap between the seat and tank. Everything should be ready to go to the powdercoater by the start of next week.

Re: 1973 cb500 build by a 17 year old

So i went to the "Honda Doctor" yesterday and he got the bearing retainer off of the front but he ruined it so i have to order another. That's no big deal but when it comes to the rear one he took it into the back and i heard pounding ensue. I thought he had the right tool to take it off but as it turns out he didn't and was just hitting it with a punch. Not only did he not get it off but he was hitting it the wrong way because it was a reverse thread  . I thought for sure he of all people would know that considering he is the "Honda Doctor". He told me that there was no point in replacing the bearings and that I should just spray paint the hub. Thats not going to happen. hopefully i can get it tonight.

Uh,
What a douche
He should be buying you new retainers at least. If he couldn't do it he should have said so upfront and not destroyed your stuff.

Well he is the kinda guy who would get mad if i ever tried to correct him. Especially because im so young. I feel like its a different situation when you're older and can talk back to a grouchy 65 year old know it all

Re: 1973 cb500 build by a 17 year old

If a man breaks your stuff, especially in the process of fixing it for profit, he is obligated to replace it - 16 or 65.

Tough spot to be in. It's a lot easier for an adult to push a kid around than someone they see as an equal.

Yeah i mean he didn't charge me anything for the 10 minutes he spent on it because i think that he was a little embarrassed that he couldn't get it himself. It would be a different situation if he ruined the rear retainer because they don't make them anymore and they are impossible to find. $20 isn't much to cry about and there is no use in burning bridges because after i got the helicoil he said he would give me a final tune up for free once the bike was ready to ride.

Re: 1973 cb500 build by a 17 year old

I can only speak for myself but I wouldn't be inclined to have a tuneup done by a man who can't get a retainer out

Haha i mean i his shop is full of amazing restored hondas and he has been doing it for many years. I think what happened can be attributed to the fact that the 500 retainers are different than all the other Hondas. I misspoke by saying tune up. He said he would sync my carbs for free

Re: 1973 cb500 build by a 17 year old
