1973 cb500 build

Re: 1973 cb500 build by a 17 year old

Drew out some plans for the electronics tray that will be hidden under the seat. The good thing about making friends with the robotics/shop teacher is that he lets me use everything after school ;D

Are these shock mount bearings on the swingarm?

Re: 1973 cb500 build by a 17 year old

Did you do any of the metal work or welding on that electronics tray on your own?

I did all the work on the tray. I have taken CAD classes that helped me draw it out and my dad/shop classes at school have tought me how to use most of the machinery and tools in that shop.

Re: 1973 cb500 build by a 17 year old

There is no welding on the tray either. The welding on my seat pan was done by my girlfriends dad.

Re: 1973 cb500 build by a 17 year old

All work done on this thread is by me unless i say otherwise. :)

Re: 1973 cb500 build by a 17 year old

Looks pretty good, I would get you gf dad to at least hit the seams on that tray, it will vibrate pretty bad otherwise.

That is a pretty sweet shop, short of a few cnc machines and laser cutters, it's bigger than my shop at work!

yeah i think thats what i was going to do anyway. Just to make sure its mostly water tight. We have 2 small cnc machines but they arent good for doing anything thats harder than aluminum or plastic. I think they got a grant to buy a 3D printer in the near future

Concerning the seat pan over the tank mount: How will you remove the tank? Do you intend to remove the seat whenever the tank needs to come off?

The "Honda Doctor", is that shop in Waterford? If you are traveling all the way to that area, you may want to check out Lakes Motorsports or Bowman's Small Displacement, both in Waterford as well. Very friendly folks and willing to help, good experience with both.

BTW, build is looking good.

Yes the seat will have to be removed to take the tank off but the mounting system for the seat is simple and its easy to take off. Chances are i wont need to take the tank off much once i finish the bike and if i do it will still take less time and effort than most bikes.
Yes the "honda Doctor" is the one in Waterford. Ill look into those other shops but i dont think i will need anything from them any time soon.
Thanks :)

So i dumped out my new parts bin just to take some inventory and show whats coming.

-brake shoes

-Stainless brake lines
-Fork seals
-All balls front, rear, and steering bearings
-bearing retainer (front)

Just a heads up...those Tec shocks are very sketchy. If rebuilt with drilled dampeners they can be ok, I have also heard of them snapping at the eye. Some people have made them work but honestly for another hundred bucks you can get some hagons.

I did a substantial amount of research on them, and so far i have not read anything like that. In fact i have read that they are much better than the stock shocks for cb500's, and many modern triumph riders say that they will never go back. They also have a good warranty and the price cant be beat if they are anything like what i have heard so far.

There not as bad as the RFY eBay shocks but they are not good quality shocks. You dont need to defend your decision just giving you the truth, for 100 bucks more you can get a shock that's proven, reliable, and actually used on race bikes.

Re: 1973 cb500 build

Update: I think I was given the hubs from hell. I have tried everything to get these bearings out and they won't budge. Heat, HF bearing puller, cement anchors, using a hammer and screwdriver and no luck.
