1975 CB550 F cafe... SV650/Ninja frankenbike getting FULL PROFILE SHOTS 12/10

Re: 1975 CB550 F cafe...

looking good looking good... few tricks when powdereing you want to watch your PMT (part metal temp) also thickness. the 2nd parts look good man but you are going to want to mask the sections on the inside of the trees where the tubes go as well as the neck. but that looks great! nice work. let me knwo fi you have any powder questions... i lay pow pow on a daily basis... what seat is that you are rocking there?

Re: 1975 CB550 F cafe...

thanks man, I knew I would have to clean out the bar and tube ares, but I dont have any high temp tape yet, I have the harbor freight gun, and it really is worth what you pay for it. It took me 3 pounds of powder to get it set up tto get that nice finish on teh trip.

that seat is a manx seat i bought on here, no idea the brand, and not sure if I am going to make a full cover for it, or paint the rear, and only partially cover it for now.

I may send you a message about a couple of questions I have.

Re: 1975 CB550 F cafe...

WHAT 3 lbs of powder!!!! that is crazy! 3 lbs of powder will do 10 bikes top to bottom... i would really sugest you look at getting a real gun, makes all the diff in the world! i lay powder with a eastwood pro gun, we have 2 of them and they rock! if you just want to do your own stuff you can get away with the hobby gun that they sell it is a NIGHT and day diff from the harbor freight gun. Just be sure you have a goood moisture catch in your lines. i would also sugest you pull off the difuser and drop a bunch of holes in it, that will let you get a good size cloud at lower PSI and not blow past the part.

Re: 1975 CB550 F cafe...

lol, I looked at my containers, I thought it was a 2 lb container, nope,

I used about 12 ounces of powder, the stuff was pretty much falling out of teh gun on day 1.

my setup yesterday, worked perfectly.

unless I can make money at PC, what I have will ahve to work...

I am building this bike with no job, and going to school to hopefully get a new job OUTSIDE of the auto industry

Re: 1975 CB550 F cafe...

ahh very cool. in that case i would sugest hot flockin them... bring them up to around 150* and then powder them... will help the powder stick and flow out as you go... just watch your thicknesses... what is your prep? i can help you out

Re: 1975 CB550 F cafe...

I have been doing wire brush or sanding, and then solvent cleaning.

after the solvent clean, i baked the part to get rid of any possible out gassing, let it cool til I could touch it, then move it to the spray rack while warm

I can paint, and do pretty well if I don't say so myself, this is just a way different medium, but I am liking it!

I hope to get one of those pressure vessel blasters, but will limit myself to nice weather work, as I can't do that in the shed :(

Re: 1975 CB550 F cafe...

I did some work today, it's amazing how simple these things are!

Re: 1975 CB550 F cafe...

Riley (my 9 year old son) wanted to get a pic of me on my bike, so here it is!

Re: 1975 CB550 F cafe...

I really want to do a ninja swing arm on my cb500 my friend has a 85 600 that he gave me the swing arm off of. I just have not took the plung yet (winter) what are you going to do about shocks or shock that is my only delima now that I saw that arm sitting in your 550 frame. your bike looks great especally if you use that swing arm

Re: 1975 CB550 F cafe...

I am going to weld shock mounting brackets to the swingarm, and I will use 2 shocks like it originally would have.
my ultimate goal would be to use the front end off of something more modern also, I was hoping to find a cheap ninja front end too

Re: 1975 CB550 F cafe...

Should put a louisville slugger sticker on that pipe. Holy snuff.

What length are the stock rear shocks? Im looking for a 14'' pair eye to clevis. Though I think I could mod the og ones.

Re: 1975 CB550 F cafe...

yeah that muffler was huge, it fell apart when i removed it, so it will be replaced....

I'll measure those shocks later on when i dig the bike out

Re: 1975 CB550 F cafe...

Re: 1975 CB550 F cafe...

lookikng good man! you going to round off that front fender a bit? if you use some clear packing tape over it and cut some more or grind it down it will not chip or flake the chrome

Thanks alot!, I am going to round it off, that is just the rough cut to get it to size, I will shape it and most likely paint it, as the chrome is pretty much crap anyway.

I still wish I hadnt dented that tank!!!! I have to work on massaging that big old dent out instead of just prepping and painting :(

are those the stock bars flipped upside down? :-\
yeah, they were a good estimation of clubmans, and after doing the bars upside down, I found I will not be running clubmans or clipons like I had planned....my belly and back wont let me!

so instead of spending money on something i would not like....i tried the bars upside down.

so why the :-\??
last time I checked its way better to be smart and frugal vs spending money that you dont have on something you wont want!!!

Re: 1975 CB550 F cafe...

using the bars upside-down rarely gives the correct riding position. thats the main argument with clubmans vs clipons. clipons offer a much greater ability to tweak your riding position so that you can ride for longer than 20 minutes (provided you have rearsets).

I was under the assumption that you were using the upsidedown bars in the final product
