Castle Trim in Edwardstown did a fantastic job for $150. He had a few tips for next time as well. Nice guy.

Care to share any?? :)

He suggested using Bakelite (I think he called it?? Same material they use for plastic chopping boards) and a heat gun to form the plastic for the base. It's easier for him to staple.

He suggested using Bakelite …

It would have been HDPE (High Density PolyEthylene). It has great solvent resistance and is easy to work with.

Bakelite is a plastic from the early 1900s that definitely is not suitable for stapling.

Your bike is coming together well!

Crazy

bakelite would onlly be used on steampunk bikes for that authentic Edwardian look

Go the HDPE route. It can be moulded great with just a bit of heat. 225f melt point. Also hurts like a bitch if it melts around your finger. Trust me.

Progress has been steady, but work has had me interstate a fair bit lately. Here's where it sits right now, tank painted (boy do I hate rattle cans now) and all electrics finished, LED all around and no sign of flickering even at idle so I'm thrilled with that.
Took it for its first ride and tuning seems pretty close, plug chop was a nice colour and there aren't any dead spots in the entire range.
Now just waiting for another speedo (last one was faulty, that's what I get with eBay crap I suppose) and chase down an issue with the horn.
Starting to worry about the registration process now. Looked up the chassis number (1980 pre VIN number model) and can't seem to find any history of the bike - no encumbrances but also no prior registration!? No idea what its going to take to get this thing registered now. Any insight from locals would be great!

If you are in Queensland then all good, nothing to worry about.

I cannot say about other states though.

Tank and seat look nice. Good work mate

Looks so good! Where did you get the front fender from? I need to get one

Thanks Brodie, Queensland is my home but I'm based in Adelaide at the moment. May end up sending the bike north and registering it up there if it comes to that.

eglintonw, It was just a dodgey old yamaha fender that I picked up from MR cycles in St Agnes. $20. Plan to eventually have it powder coated black to match the frame.

from memory in adelaide (Regency Park ?) all you should need is the receipt from the previous owner to prove you own it, even if it's never been on their computers it shouldn't matter, when i took my GSX11 over there they were happy enuf with the expired rego papers from vic

(don't tell anyone but people have been known to write up their own receipts to minimize stamp duty costs or just cos they lost the one they got from the seller when they bought it)

i think theres also a national register for stolen frame/engine numbers that they will check , but hopefully that won't affect you

Thanks spotty, I'll get in contact with the old owner and see if he can write something up for me. Fingers crossed it's nice and simple. I've checked the register about half a dozen times with different combinations of the frame number and nothing is showing up so hopefully this will all be nice and straightforward.

Just do it the Qld way. Get your mate to write up one for 200 bucks and pay bugger all stamp duty.

If you're not certain about the history of the bike I wouldn't get your mate to make a receipt cause it could land him in a bit of trouble. Nice work on the bike mate looks great. Did you end up using a capacitor to steady the volts a bit because you're not using a battery?

In qld you don't actually need a receipt to register, you can fill out a declaration of acquisition or some fancy name they call it. Done it a few times now

She's registered! What a relief. Managed to get someone very helpful and sensible at the services sa who found records of the bike being registered 18 years ago! Took her for a quick blast around the block with a huge smile on my face :)

Next few days will be a bit of a shake down I guess. Taking all bets on what let's go first! Chasing a few small oil leaks as well. One appears to be from the crankcases split but I want to avoid splitting the cases again if I can.
