71 Indignant CB175 - Complete (w/ pics)!!!

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - Exhaust Pondering...

Another idea, but I still like it my way.

I think both ways look good.
I think the 2-1 looks more trick, and the 2-2 more badass.

Agreed. Now I am also reconsidering wrap for the area where your leg goes. I think I may go with a heat shield instead and I really like this one.

Still looking though. Any suggestions are welcome. Another thought is that I could get a stock CL one and make it look like what I want, but those are damn expensive anymore.

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - Exhaust Pondering...

Where did you find that heat shield?
That's one of the better ones I've seen.

I know some people hate pipe-wrap, but I think it's all in how it's applied.
If it's tight and neat it looks good.

It's from this site I believe. I found it on Google Images. 8)

could you use a pipe and press a dent in your mufflers like the stock muffler had? or if you want to run the 2 into one you can get a collector for less then $30 here

Thanks for the link. I don't think I'll go with a collector on this build though. I thought about denting the mufflers, but with how the pipes line up now, I would have to crush the mufflers to get them to not touch. The root of the problem seems to be the pipes, so I'll just take them to get bent outward.

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - Exhaust Pondering...

I think I have finally finished the wiring! Well almost. A couple wires are hanging because I'm not sure where they should go... I'll figure that out later.

First time the headlight has ever been on the bike...I think.

And one of those extraneous wires...

I'm going to try and fire it up this weekend hopefully!

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - Need Help Starting!

Troubleshooting has begun to get this bike running. Its so very close, but I still don't have ignition. I need some help figuring out what to do next. Here are the things that have been done/elminated.

1. Carbs have fuel
2. Floats aren't stuck and are working
3. Slides are in correctly - slant towards air filter
4. Coil is getting power
5. Plugs are getting spark
6. Points have spark
7. Plugs and points are properly gapped

Things to note:

1. Plugs are NOT wet
2. Cylinder smells of gas (gas likely in oil now)
3. Pods have been removed to continue testing since the pics and video below

After all the work done today, it leads me to believe that its a timing issue. I can't figure out what to do. I am 100% positive that I set the timing chain correctly when I put the motor together and I really really don't want to take it apart...so if you suggest it, I will require proof that that is the cause.

I have rigged up an IV for gas so I don't have to mess with the tank, and we have bypassed the battery and jumped the solenoid to ensure enough power is provided. See the pictures and video below.

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - Exhaust Pondering...

IIRC, the ignition rotor can be installed 180 degrees off. Check that the rotor is correct inside the points plate.

I called DreadRock tonight and he mentioned the same thing. However, what we (my friend and I) couldn't figure out was how to do that because it is a 360-degree twin, not a 180-degree twin -- one point not two. So I couldn't figure out how it would make a difference. Can you tell me/show me what I need to do?

Anyway, if I think hard about this I confuse myself or disprove my own theories....any help?

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - Need Help Starting!

It looks like I need to follow this procedure.

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - Need Help Starting!

That procedure only helps if you're a little off on timing. If that was the case, you should still get some kind of ignition. It sounds like you're way off, like 180 off. It could still fire the plugs 180 off and not run. It fires every 360. A 180 could be flipped and still run cause it is a wasted spark. Take the points out then advancer out. The advancer has a small cylindrical piece that moves out the weights. Remove it and flip it. If this part was ever disassembled, it is possible it was assembled wrong. This is the part that is keyed to the cam with a slot on the back. I did this once so that's how I know. Basically, it must be correctly timed to the cam, not the crank. It should be the same as my single, just with two coils & plugs.

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - Need Help Starting!

I don't recall setting my timing off 180° when I had my 175, so I'm not much help there. Could the idle be set too low (or too high)?

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - Need Help Starting!

Hope you get your ride running - a lot of time in detailing on this one.
Anyway, regarding fouling of the mufflers on the exhaust, I have the same issue on my 175. Recently I went to the local muffler shop and got them to do 4, 30 degree bends in some 1-1/2" tailpipe tubing. The tubing is a snug fit over the Honda exhaust I'm using and I'll either clamp or weld it up front. First joggle out, then joggle back in - kinda like a stretched "S" if you get my drift. In my case, some welding is involved as we couldn't get the bends very close together with the machine we were using but you may be able to find a better tube bender. I'll paint the joggle pipes with silver hi-temp paint when the welding is done and chrome them if / when I get rich.
It looks like you're using universal fit mufflers, which should have come with collars to fit various OD pipes, so they should fit over the 1-1/2" pipe. In my case, I'm using NOS FMC megaphones which are size-specific and I'm making the header pipes the same length, which puts the RHS meg about 5" forward of the LHS, so a little more complicated but not a whole lot.
Hope the above helps and now I hope you can tell me where you got the rubber S boots between your carbs and aircleaners.
Pat

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - Need Help Starting!

Thanks for the insight and your experience paco. I will be looking into getting the pipes bent outward as soon as I get the bike running.

Those 'S-boots' between the carbs and the pods are the original stock air cleaner extensions. I just trimmed off the excess rubber for the stock air box connection and stuck the pods on the end.

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - Need Help Starting!

60 PSI for both cylinders. Going to put some oil in and check again.

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - Need Help Starting!

Added 1-2ml of oil to each cylinder. Compression is now at 80 PSI, left and right.

What are the next steps/options?

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - Need Help Starting!

Scratch that! I ran those tests without the throttle wide open. New and correct numbers are 125 PSI on both cylinders!

Next.

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - Need Help Starting!

Ha! Dodged that bullet.....

What else are you thinking on getting her to run?
