What happened to my idea? Ignition rotor is ok?

That'll be next, I didn't have enough time to start messing with that, and I don't know what I'm doing there. Compression test was easy.

Ha! Dodged that bullet.....

What else are you thinking on getting her to run?

Tell me about it...I was freaking out! I thought I was going to have to tear apart the motor because I messed up. It seems to still be an ignition problem, so eyhonda's test is next.

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - Need Help Starting!

Update time. Not much to tell. I took a nice vacation at the family's campground for 5 days, enjoyed MotoGP and just relaxed. Before I left, my friend bought a CB200T for cheap and though it didn't have everything it needed, he was able to get it to fire right up. So he took off the points cover, snapped a picture and sent it to me. Sure enough, my points plate was rotated about 40 degrees off. Now, I have since adjusted it to where it should be but I have not yet gotten a chance to try to fire it. Maybe Thursday or Friday, but I think it might be that simple. If it still doesn't go after that, then WD-40 test will be next.

In other news, I have placed the final layer of fiberglass to reinforce the seat pan and will be taking it to the upholstery shop this week. The last bike item will be bending the exhaust out, which will have to wait until I return from Cali in September.

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - We have ignition!

I telled ya I knew it was an ignition problem! Sure enough rotating that points plate did it! ...well that and replacing the "new" spark plugs that wouldn't spark!

She lives!

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - We have ignition!

Quick question, what method of painting/ type of paint did you use for the frame, forks, etc. ?

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - We have ignition!

The paint for the forks, frame, etc was just rattle can gloss black with a good amount of cleaning, prep work, and primer.

Thanks Rich. Perhaps next year I'll have her out at Vintage days! Along with my next project...which I should have in a couple weeks! :-X

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - We have ignition!

Before this happened, didn't you check the ignition timing? That would have told you it was wrong. 40 degrees is a lot. Either way, I'm glad you got it running! On to the next stage!

Funny thing about that. The points plate had indention marks from the screws holding it in place. So when I put it back together after I got the head back from the shop, I aligned it with those marks instead of lining the '0' mark straight up, or rather, aligning it with the crank. We figured it was timing all along since fuel and spark weren't an issue. We had both, but no ignition. It was until I saw a correctly rotating timing plate that I knew what was up.

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - We have ignition!

Ok, I see. That may not be accurate enough tho. Using the marks just get you in the ballpark. If you have a meter or a test light, you need to do the static timing properly. Basically, the points will open at the "F" mark on the rotor. Crank the motor with a wrench. You can use the continuity setting, to check connection with ground. The points are a switch to ground. It fires when the points "break" contact with ground. If you have a timing light, that's even better. Can't remember if these motors can be checked when running with the alternator cover off.

We did this with the alternator cover off and on every rotation of the crank, we made sure that it sparked when it was supposed to (on the F mark) and got it aligned properly, which was right about exactly where it was.

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - We have ignition!

Since the bike is now "running", I have started down the long dark road of titling her. Since the PO didn't have a title, I have to get a bonded title through an insurance broker for the DMV. Ugh! The process has been started and I'm waiting to hear back.

Has anyone gone through this process and have any words of wisdom to share?

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - We have ignition!

I got in touch with a local insurance broker who said that it would be $100 for a bonded title that I could take to the DMV and have licensed. The bonded title will remain in effect for a period of 1-3 years, depending on state, and if no one has reported it stolen or otherwise in that time period, they will issue a clean title in my name. So, that was fairly painless.

In other news, the tank and seat are shipped and on their way back! Shiny 'completion' pictures soon! ;D

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - Paint Finished!!

I had expected for the freshly painted tank and seat to arrive today. I swear my Fedex guy is the stealthiest ninja ever! I never noticed the big box at the front door all day and up until 9pm tonight when my wife asks..."is that a package on the porch!?"

So naturally I rush it to the garage and tear into it.

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - Paint Finished!!

Whoa! Paint looks nice and all.....but that seat & tank combo is rad!

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - Paint Finished!!

Thanks guys. I still have to mess around with the seat as it is. Its not laying on my bumper supports like I want so more tweaking is needed. I got the stock seat lock shaft riveted on as well as the aluminum support bars on the underside of the seat last night.

In other news, a great victory for me as I just finished the last little bit of wiring and buttoned up the front! I just need to get a new battery and I can start engine tuning!

I never thought I'd see the day...

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - Paint Finished!!

Excellent bike man!

I have a 175 myself and am befuddled as to how you got the seat hoop welded on so cleanly. Do you have any pictures or explanation of your method in getting your circular cross-section welded to the stamped frame cross-section? Did you add material somewhere? I'm sure this is an age-old question...

Thanks and good work!

Thanks for the comments. I originally started this build under another thread in a different subforum and changed direction with the build so I moved it. Check out the link here for the post where I put the loop on.
