72 CB750: Dolores... 5 years later, I'm back to work!

Re: 72 CB750: Dolores... Finally back to work! Paint!!

ya bud you can not top coat the epoxy paint, that is why i used to use it on wheels and stuff that do not need top coat/cear... i strongly recomend against it on tins... for that rustoluem or dupicolor... rustoleum spry on bed liner has a wicked finish to it bud... we shot the whole goldwing in it

Dolores in bedliner = I'm in fucking love!

This must be accomplished with the utmost speed and diligence.

Re: 72 CB750: Dolores... Finally back to work! Paint!!

Okay, I hear ya, but then I have to strip the epoxy off of the tank. I have had success topcoating the appliance epoxy, but only after the paint had been on for a while. I know the stuff gases out forever. I'd love to do the spray-on, but I want it to be a two tone with a gloss black or orange over the top.
I've also used the rusto spray on many times, in fact there's a good bit of it on Dolores right now. I'm going for the rusto spray on next attempt. Same plan though, going to try it on a completely gassed out coat of appliance epoxy. The appliance epoxy is what Dolores was wearing before when she was almond. I never had a problem with it, plus it resisted gasoline much better than other rattle can finishes I've tried. Also the black on the tank now is coated over appliance epoxy almond. I don't really know. More thought is required...

Re: 72 CB750: Dolores... Finally back to work! Paint!!

is there alot of body work under there... personally i would start over... you can get strippesrs that will only strip top coats and will not touch the primer... that is prob what i would do but i feel ya man, tough to beat the finish the epoxy has... i shot some hose clamps in it this morning hahaha

Re: 72 CB750: Dolores... Finally back to work! Paint!!

Dude, the bedliner can be painted over. Instead of epoxy with a bedliner graphic, lay the bedliner and use a gloss clear for stripes or what not. You know you want to...

Re: 72 CB750: Dolores... Finally back to work! Paint!!

hmmmm... you may be onto something there crescent. I've sanded down the tail, I may post pics tonight, but it's just a sanded tail section so maybe not...

Re: 72 CB750: Dolores... Finally back to work! Paint!!

Okay so I think I've got my paint issues sorted. I went with the spray on bedliner over the fully cured appliance epoxy. It works out nicely. I've got the tank done and I've got the bedliner on the tail. Going to try to spray the appliance epoxy on the tail tonight to have the paint wrapped up. Also after spending some time bondoing over the badge mounts on the tank I've decided to put my refinished stock badges from my other tank on this one. I'm also putting the honda wing badges on the sidecovers. Anyway on with the pics.
Here's the tail after sanding down my roll-on bedliner snafu.

Here's the tank.

And here's the tank back on the bike.

And the badges that will be going on the bike.

Hoping to get the front tire replaced saturday, then repaint the rim and begin to redo the whole front end.

And Alex did call to the moto gods, and the universe answered, and it did rain awesomeness in torrents. All then sang of Delores, for it was good... Hallelujah.

Re: 72 CB750: Dolores... Front end disassembly and paint, plus a front tire!

Ha! Glad you approve bro! So I had the local shop swap my front tire. I kept the old one for a belt. The tire is okay lookin. I was hoping for wider, but it'll do. I haven't repainted the rim yet, but that's next.

I also started tearing down the front end. I removed the fork leg and everything that goes on it from the left side.
frontend7.jpg

The fork leg got new dust caps instead of the gaitors that were on it and I reprayed the lowers in appliance epoxy black. I sprayed the uppers in the spray on bedliner and the fork tube brace will go on at the line.

I resprayed the clipon.
frontend2.jpg

I polished the headlight ear that I made way back.
frontend4.jpg

I did a paint and polish job on the caliper mount.
frontend3.jpg

I also cut down the badges so that they would sit flush against the smoothed tank.

Up next is the front wheel being painted and the other side of the forks getting the same treatment.

Re: 72 CB750: Dolores... Front end disassembly and paint, plus a front tire!

Everything looks very nice Brother!

Re: 72 CB750: Dolores... Front end disassembly and paint, plus a front tire!

that bedliner on the top of the forks is a cool idea. Badges look the shit.

Re: 72 CB750: Dolores... Front end disassembly and paint, plus a front tire!

Thanks for the link Godffery. I've bookmarked it. The plans are not for a brake update this go round. I'm trying to finish this one up in the next couple of weeks. I just want to ride her again. It's been almost a year now. And besides, for the first couple of years that I owned this bike I rode it with no front brake! So as far as I'm concerned having a front brake at all is a major improvement. Plus this bike is being built for peanuts. I've rebuilt it three times now and I've still got less than 2k in it including purchase price. Things like keeping the stock blinkers, brakes, headlight, guage, etc. have helped keep this bike cheap.
Thanks Brothers Joe and Jay!

Re: 72 CB750: Dolores... Front end disassembly and paint, plus a front tire!

Cool.

BTW; how are you going to get the forks back on with that bed liner on them?

Re: 72 CB750: Dolores... Front end disassembly and paint, plus a front tire!

Very Carefully... :)
I'm going to get another set of hands to help me pry the clamps a bit to hopefully slide the tubes in without scratching. Last time I did this I masked, dropclothed and sprayed in place. But then I had to disassemble at some point and the tubes came out without goofing up the bedliner too much. So I'll do my best, but that'll be a fingers crossed kind of ordeal.
BTW love the bike in your avatar!

Re: 72 CB750: Dolores... Front end disassembly and paint, plus a front tire!

Humm... I got a bad feeling about that. = /
Even if you do get them on there without bending or breaking the clamps; THEN having that bed liner between the tube & clamp will make the forks flex & likely slip. I would recommend using something you could slide on the fork tubes, like a peace of radiator hose, Large shrink tubing or something similar, JUST in-between the clamp areas and NOT under the clamps.

Thanks for the compliment on the bike in the Avatar; here’s a link to see more if you’d like: http://tinyurl.com/yfrw4fc

Re: 72 CB750: Dolores... Front end disassembly and paint, plus a front tire!

i would be carful of that as well! but screw it man it is bed liner super easy to touch up. slide them up there and then touch tehm up... you should have made a cover and shot the cover like i did on the brat wing. with the fork boots on there no point to do the whole tube ya know
