72 CB750: Dolores... 5 years later, I'm back to work!

Re: 72 CB750: Dolores... Front end disassembly and paint, plus a front tire!

Well i got the fork tube back in this afternoon. Pics later. But the flexing is a very astute observation that i will take a very cautious approach to. I got the tube in without any scratching and i've tightened the clamps down snug. If i notice any give or twisting during some testing, then i'll have to pull the tubes and possibly go with the radiator hose. Good lookin out dude.

Re: 72 CB750: Dolores... Paint, front end together, and other fun stuff!

So I've been working for a bit without posting and have a rather large update today. But not really that large... so we'll call it a medium-largish update. Or just a medium update. Fuck it, it's an update anyway.
Old dirty rim, new tire...

Old dirty rim, new tape on new tire...

Old, shiny, clean rim, new paint, new tire...

Front end, one tube done, one tube not.

Front end, both tubes in and done.

Finally got my two tone bedliner and appliance paint done on the tank and tail.
black4.jpg

Also painted my chopped down oil filter and have begun sanding the fins.
black7.jpg

Here's a shot beside a stock one. This might be my favorite modified stock part on the bike.
black5.jpg

Also I did some work on some 350 badges. The white on them didn't look good with all of the black on the bike so I painted the badges with the appliance epoxy black then let them cure. After that I took some sand paper to them to clean the paint off of the raised edges. I like the result and it'll look great on my sidecovers as soon as I get them all buttoned up.
black6.jpg

I have already recoated my sidecovers in the black, next is to tape them off and mark and cut a circle out of the tape. I'll lay bedliner in the circle and center the badges inside of it. Hopefully I'll be getting that done today and have some pretty pics for you guys.

So here's a shot of how she sits right now. She's waiting on me to get punched out on the paint, put her carbs back on and hook everything up.
black8.jpg

And another...
black9.jpg

I have a three-day weekend going so I should be able to get some stuff done. We'll see. I hope to drop off my seat, pad, and leather with the upholsterer sometime today as well. I have a new workshop being delivered on the 21st. It has a roll-up door on one side, a window, and a single door. It's 12x16 and it will be my new work space. I'm stoked about it, but I want my bike done by then so that I can finally start on my treefiddy.

Ha! That song plays in my head everytime I spray something black!

Re: 72 CB750: Dolores... Paint, front end together, and other fun stuff!

Hell yes Alex! I really like the way the 350 badges came out. That's very nice. Good to see you're tooling back around again! Got your PM, I'll be replying when I have time!!!!

I like 'em as well. Nice touch :)

Re: 72 CB750: Dolores... A few things I've been doing.

Thanks a lot guys!
I haven't been working on the bike that much recently. In fact I've consciously had to put it on hold. Thing number one that is now ahead of it is this stone countertop I'm doing for my wife's new office. She's having some chairs recovered in Zebra print so I'm doing the counter in travertine on tumbled black marble zebra pattern with a black border. I don't have much time to work on this right now but I'm about halfway done with the zebra part. Here's a pic.

And the other big thing that is going on is that I HAVE MY SHOP! I ordered a 10x16 wooden building with 8 ft ceilings and a rollup door on one end. This will be my project shop and bike storage.
Here it is right after delivery
shop27.jpg

shop2.jpg

So there's a bit more work involved in doing this properly than I had anticipated. So far I've wired it (7 outlets 2 switches) insulated it (minus some places like where the wiring comes in and where i'm mounting exterior lights) and begun cladding the walls with 7/16 inch thick osb(chip board). Here's a shot after doing some insulating.
shop1.jpg

Next is wiring the overhead lights, then insulating the ceiling and cladding it in the 7/16 chip board. Then building a ramp to roll things up in there. I'll get some more pics as this progresses, think of it as a build thread within a build thread...

Re: 72 CB750: Dolores... A few things I've been doing.

Awesome Alex. I have thought about getting a building just to store bikes in. That could end getting full too though, then what another building? congrats on the building and good work on the countertop. Jenn wants to paint the kitchen and the living room.

Re: 72 CB750: Dolores... A few things I've been doing.

I'm stuck on the word "cladding"...

Awesome on the shop dude. It is great to have a warm, well lit place to keep the bikes! Then we need more updates on the bike project!

Re: 72 CB750: Dolores... A few things I've been doing.

It's been mentioned a couple of times but having bed liner under the clamps isn't a good idea.
As Tim mentioned on page 4, the tweak bar doesn't really do much if anything on stock forks, they were designed to prevent twisting of tubes on 4"~6" or more over (chopper forks)
You will need a fork brace fitted to the lower sliders, 750 is too heavy to safely use without it.
Even stock mudguard mount is batter than nothing.
Just my opinion, but, a cafe bike should be able to go around corners with less drama than stock, not handle 'worse' because of parts removed
Nice shed, high ceiling is going to be real useful
Having more space to work in /store stuff is always good ;)

Re: 72 CB750: Dolores... A few things I've been doing.

On, yeah after testing I slid the tubes back out and scraped the Bedliner off of the space where the clamps make contact. And I've been looking for the proper fender brace, but I think I'm going to have to buy one. Although I've ridden the bike for a couple of years with no drama without a slider brace, if a thing's worth doing and all of that.
And the tube brace... I know it does very little to nothing for my application. :(
Once I score the right fender brace I'll remove and dustbin it. It came with some boxes of cb750 bits I bought way back and I've always had a soft spot for it. Plus it hides the line where the Bedliner (and pitting under it) stops. But it won't clear the mudguard hoop, plus it is dead weight.

Re: 72 CB750: Dolores... A few things I've been doing.

None of those say they fit my bike. I love them and they're priced right, but I need one for a 1972 cb750k. I'm not sure if one of the models listed may be interchangable?
I was just going to modify a fender brace, but if I can find a nice one like that for around a benjamin...

Re: 72 CB750: Dolores... A few things I've been doing.

So while looking for fork braces for my bike at cyclexchange I came across the product Tweak Bar/Fork Brace which is essentially the same thing as my tweak bar. Under description it says:
Meant to stabilize your front end.
when longer fork tubes are used.
Will also benefit stabilizing stock length tubes.
Now I don't believe everything I read, so PJ, why is their claim incorrect? I have no doubts that the benefits would be small... but are they there? If so I may keep the bar assuming I can get it to clear the as yet unfound-or-bought fork brace. I do have a soft spot for that chunk of aluminum...

Re: 72 CB750: Dolores... A few things I've been doing.

Those "Tweak Bar/Fork Brace" sold by cycleX clamp to the fork tube, not the fork slider.
When you’re looking for fitment on Fast From The Past, You can go with 22-0030 http://www.fastfromthepast.com/servlet/the-503/Fork-Brace-Honda-CB750F1/Detail because the only difference is a slightly taller fork slider on the late model SOHC 750s, witch will not effect your fitment if you're not running a front fender.

Re: 72 CB750: Dolores... A few things I've been doing.

Nice job with the tank emblems! They look really good. How did you get the wings off? I need to do my wings, but was unsure of how to remove them without breaking them...

Also, that is an awesome shed/bike garage. 8) I am really jealous ;D

Re: 72 CB750: Dolores... A few things I've been doing.

A tweak bar stabilises front end on stock forks by changing leverage ratio very slightly plus bracing both tubes together.
If it's tight against bottom yoke it has same effect as shortening forks by whatever thickness it's made of, e.g. instead of having an 18" lever you only have a 17" lever (tyre contact patch to bottom yoke)
Various parts will spring, twist and flex during normal operation
Tweak bar has virtually no effect on the forks 'walking' though
The only thing holding the bottoms together is the axle and there is enough leverage to allow that to rotate slightly, plus, it will bend (but has enough spring to return to original position)

The ad isn't totally incorrect.

Main problem I have, 99.999% of the time it won't matter if you don't have a fork brace, but, the time it does matter could kill you (shit happens ;) )

may notbe best explanation in the world, but, it,s 2:38am ::)

Try telling that to the left fork seal on the CX650 which keeps killing itself due to the lack of fork brace on the front.
