'73 CB250 - Doing it right this time round.

Trying to build a bike whilst at University is an absolute pain! Never enough time to spend playing bikes!

Slowly but surely making progress, still just sanding away at the frame.

Removed the cross bar mount on the right side for the original footrests. Keeping the left side as the side stand attached to it.

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img842/6792/16032013600.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

Still got some shaping and filling to do round the rear down tubes as I seemed to have missed a few spots.

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img203/3519/16032013602.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img822/8606/16032013603.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

Other than that, just filling in spot welds.

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img826/69/16032013599.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

Parts keep slowly making there way in.

Lucas MT110 tailight, and new spokes + nipples.

Seeing as I have everything I need for the wheels, I decided to start on them and get them finished and put out the way til its time to put them on.

The chrome was too pitted to polish, so I sanded them then self-etched them.

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img826/3705/24032013607.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

Then whacked a few coats of 2k gloss black on them, and the clip ons.

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img837/6287/26032013613.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img145/3511/26032013611.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img171/7075/26032013612.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

I also finalised the seat mounting. Drilled a few holes in the seat and the frame, and just tapped the holes for a couple M5 bolts. I was suprised how sturdy and well they held it, but I will be securing it at the rear more when I make the taillight mount.

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img577/9019/26032013614.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img706/6298/26032013616.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

I still need to shape the rear better where it joins into the seat to make it flow, and then its time for paint!

While I sprayed the rims, I also put a coat of 2k gloss on the bottom yoke.

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img855/6947/29032013616.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

And im happy to say I have laced my first wheel!

My mate showed me how to and then pulled it apart and told me to do it. Wasnt as difficult as I thought and am pretty pleased with the results! Need him to true them for me, then fit tyres and give them a clean/touch up as there are a few slight scratches and they're covered in dust!

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img268/1711/29032013619.JPG" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img23/3259/29032013620.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img843/498/29032013621.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

Started to true the front wheel.

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img829/9872/05042013621.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

Ran into a problem with the rear. The spokes were too long despite the fact they are the spokes 'apparently' for the bike. I actually cant afford to return them seeing as they are from thailand, so im looking into shortening them.

Fabricated a new way to hold the seat on.

There is a thin plate being welded in between the frame rails.

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img268/5225/05042013626.JPG" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

There is also one bolted onto the underside of the seat.

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img16/4291/05042013625.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

The seat is then slid on, and the plate on the seat hooks under the one on the frame.

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img546/6053/05042013635.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

This holds the front of the seat on. The rear is being bolted to an underseat plate which also holds the tailight.

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img22/4517/05042013627.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img21/2959/05042013628.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img849/3316/05042013633.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img202/8728/05042013630.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

In the last picture, it isnt mounted so it doesnt fit properly.

Unsure whether to leave it as it, or paint it....either black or the same colour as the frame.

The snow buggered off for today so I actually managed to do something without freezing!

finalised the seat mounting today.

Started by welding the bracket on which support the front.

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img542/29/07042013650.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

Not the cleanest of welds but its held on strong so it'll do. The drilled four holes in the seat and the underseat plate for mounting bolts.

Once they are tightened up, they will hold the seat much tighter to the plate and the bolts will be straight too, they look wonky in a few pics because they are so loose.

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img5/8840/07042013637.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img706/1616/07042013638.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img801/637/07042013640.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img827/1806/07042013641.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

Once that was done, I started on the hole for the tailight.

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img69/5231/07042013642.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img14/6109/07042013643.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img255/7995/07042013644.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img5/4185/07042013645.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

There will be a rubber grommet between the light and the hole to stop it smacking against the metal! I haven't mounted the light yet, but I just need to make 2 small L brackets and it can be mounted permanently.

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img593/4834/07042013646.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img94/2217/07042013648.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img199/9657/07042013651.JPG" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

So thats how she sits at the minute. Just some priming and painting to do and the frame is done! :D

Got my fork seals through so I rebuild the forks today.

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img11/6618/13042013655.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

Whacked the front end together for a quick mock up. Put the clip-ons on with a new throttle and a new clutch lever. Still need to clean up and polish the top yoke and to paint the headlight bucket.

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img546/8236/13042013656.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img197/3536/13042013657.JPG" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

I then finished off the frame. Finished filling in the spot welds and smoothing off tabs, and self etched the remaining parts, like the seat pan. Now officially ready for paint.

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img835/1317/14042013657.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img199/9986/14042013658.JPG" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img824/3987/14042013662.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img832/9582/14042013663.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

While that was drying I whacked a few coats of clear on the swingarm. Looks amazing! Love the colour of the paint!

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img202/182/14042013659.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img837/4098/14042013660.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img62/3175/14042013661.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

So now I'm just waiting on paint, and then I have a roller! 8)

Whey! Finally got round to painting the frame.

Sprayed it all up and cleared it today! Love the colour of it in the sunlight, it looks really deep!

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img827/7624/20042013671.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img10/5383/20042013672.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img201/4328/20042013673.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

Installed the yokes and the freshly rebuilt forks, and put the headlight on for the time being (still needs to be painted). Put the rear shocks on.

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img7/9412/20042013674.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img203/2645/20042013675.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img6/1169/20042013676.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img69/1260/20042013678.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img707/2830/20042013679.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

Put the side stand on. I removed the cross bar that connects the side stand to both fame rails, so it only connects to one now. Saved about 0.7 of a kilogram by removing that bar! :eek:...still need to shape and smooth out the peg mount on the actual stand. Save some more weight there! haha

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img845/8247/20042013680.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

Had a look at what the rear brake plate would look like gloss black. Looks good in my opinion so going to respray it properly.

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img855/4848/20042013681.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

Put the swingarm on with new dust seals!

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img11/5806/20042013682.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img24/6063/20042013683.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img18/812/20042013685.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img805/1853/20042013686.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img824/5407/20042013687.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

So thats it at the minute. Quite a productive day, and all acheived with a major hangover after going out for my 21st bday last night! Paint fumes + hangover = bad! haha ;)

Wowzers! Now that we've put the thread in the projects area I'd expect more people will be chiming in here. Nice work.

Had a completely useless day.

Did a mock up of the taillight again to see how it looks and fab up some mounts for it. No material left to do it with so achieved nothing there.

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img822/8994/27042013687.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

Bought some rim protectors to stop scratching my rims up whilst putting the tyres on. Managed to get the front on and then realised I had pinched the tube so have to do it all again. Nightmare!

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img11/3631/27042013688.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img402/393/27042013689.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

But I did order some new clip-ons as the current ones just aren't right for it...and I bought a race bike. All good! haha

Realised last time that with the tank, mudguard, headlight, headlight ears...basically the entire front end black, I needed something to break up the colour a bit. So I went and bought some nice new billet clip-ons!

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img838/9522/04052013702.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

Acheived a bit today!

Started off by flipping the headlight ears and lowering them to create a cleaner looking front end.

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img839/9356/18052013708.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

Then put the master cylinder back on. Got a shorter braided hose to put on and a brake switch built in to the banjo to put on in future.

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img845/7025/18052013709.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img189/2470/18052013710.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img41/7523/18052013711.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

The put the bottom end in to see what it looked like. I know I need to take it back out to put the cylinders and head on but I needed to get it out of the way for the time being.

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img833/566/18052013712.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img211/903/18052013713.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img853/8176/18052013715.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img441/2969/18052013716.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img571/6060/18052013717.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img708/8756/18052013718.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

Then put the resprayed rear brake plate on. Not the smoothest finish but it will get beat to shit from stones and stuff anyway so it should do.

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img10/9638/18052013719.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

Test fitted a set of Yamaha R1 rear sets. They seem to be in a decent and comfortable place, so I need to get my hands on my own pair and find a way of mounting them sharpish.

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img845/3852/18052013720.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img856/2927/18052013721.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

I made an electronics plate to go under the seat. The regulator and the rectifier are bolted to it in order for it to act as a heat sink.

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img547/1760/18052013722.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img40/2194/18052013723.JPG" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img854/6970/18052013725.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

The frame rails hide all the wires when viewed from the side so it looks really clean!

Managed to mount the tailight too. Pop riveted a jubilee clip to the underseat place, and then tightened it round the light. I included some packing so it holds it very securely! Just need some edge guard now for the hole the light pops out of.

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img191/373/18052013726.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img51/7899/18052013727.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img849/7306/18052013728.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

Should be starting on wiring next week some time!

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img694/1508/18052013729.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

Had a little tinker with the rear sets today.

Used the ones I currently had, and sprayed the plates they attach to gloss black. Need to extend the thread a little bit, just waiting on an M6 die to do so.

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img267/7600/21052013729.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img594/6204/21052013730.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img407/5382/21052013731.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img841/2717/21052013732.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

Extended the thread on the shifter rod so now the left side rear set is sorted!

Installed my banjo brake switch. It makes the front end look very clean considering how there is only a clutch and throttle cable to put on. very simple looking.

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img690/8739/29052013736.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img837/1889/29052013739.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

Not going to bother cleaning and respraying the coil bracket as you cant see it anyway. You can also see how the frame rails hide the regulator and the rectifier from sight!

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img23/9464/29052013741.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

Also got round to drilling my disc.

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img837/6408/29052013743.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img838/4690/29052013746.jpg" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/>

Resprayed the caliper and put new stainless hardware in. The brakes are now completed ready to be mounted and then bled.

Wow, that bike has been apart and back together more times than a celebrity couple! ;)

Great work. Looks like it is finishing up nicely.
