Since it was about 50* in Cincinnati today, I spent almost all day working on the bike and made some good progress!
Items done:
- reupholstered seat with OEM style cover.
- polished metal trim pieces for seat
- stripped paint off tank
- began to completely sand tank starting with wire wheel
Original seat in poor condition
Buckles rusted and gross looking
Seat pan. Minor rust. Cover hooks into the metal teeth and then the metal trim pieces push everything tightly together.
Here you can see how the cover fastens to the seat pan
Stock cover off. Foam was luckily in very good condition
I had to improvise a bit as some of the metal teeth were broken
New cover on. This was the second attempt as the first was very wrinkled and didn't look good. I sat it out in the sun and gave it another go. My wife came out and helped me and it went a lot better
Brushed the metal trim pieces. Brushed on left, before on right.
Installing the metal trim was tough because there are 8 small holes that I had to blindly find that are drilled into the seat pan, and then punch through the cover with a small nail. I thought about not using them, but I thought the more original look was nice.
Next up was to strip the old tank to get it ready for small body work and repaint.
Aircraft stripper on!
First layer off! Found out that the tank was originally the metallic purple color. Pretty cool.
Enlisted some help! My wife rocks.
Just about finished! This is where I stopped for the evening.
I did discover my tank is missing a fuel guide which lets the gas get to both sides of the tank. I need to find another spout and weld it back to the tank. Pretty disappointing but still a good day of work! Here's the hole that I'm pointing to.
Anywho, that's all for tonight.
