74 and 75 CB360 tracker - Need to get some pics done of this.

Re: 74 and 75 CB360 tracker - motor running!! Video, one little prob though.

you shouldn't see any burning oil on a freshly rebuilt engine. what was the ring gap your mechanic noted when assembling?

Re: 74 and 75 CB360 tracker - motor running!! Video, one little prob though.

Yeah, I think thats the next call. and one to the machine shop perhaps. Luckily I have another set of jugs.

Re: 74 and 75 CB360 tracker - motor running!! Video, one little prob though.

If it's burning more oil on start up, it's most likely leaking down from the head. Are we still debating whether there is oil in the exhaust? If so, have you pulled the plugs?

Re: 74 and 75 CB360 tracker - motor running!! Video, one little prob though.

I know, I know, I'm not giving you guys much to go on. I haven't had time to really dig in to this just yet. I'll get to it asap and post more info. I appreciate all the input. I'm not much of a motor guy and it does help me think things through.

Re: 74 and 75 CB360 tracker - motor running!! Video, one little prob though.

Alright, I think we figured out whats going on here. I wasn't getting much oil up top but I was getting some so I wondered if the head gasket was leaking into the cylinder and it seems that that is exactly what was going on. The rubber seals on the rear posts had a bead of oil sitting on top of them and the head surface was wet with oil.

A couple of crappy pics;

there was a little bit of pitting on each of the aligning pins that I believe would not allow the rubber gaskets to seal properly. The oil is just looking for the easiest quickest way out and it was through that passage and right into the cylinder. The valve stems were all dry as a bone and the machinist is so well respected around here I highly doubt any fault there, (Compression test showed great even compression on both sides.)

I'll keep you posted once she's all back together.

Re: 74 and 75 CB360 tracker - motor running!! Video, one little prob though.

Check the head and top of block are flat.
There shouldn't be anywhere near enough pressure to push oil into combustion chamber and if you have a leak compression should pressurise crankcase (oil pressure shouldn't be over about 15~25psi)
You do have rings fitted in correct order and position?
The only time I've seen Honda's pump oil into combustion chamber, the second ring was fitted upside down in top ring position, particularly when someone familiar with car engines has built motor.
The second ring ISN'T a 'ridge dodger' and the expander has to fit before the side rails
I've actually seen it at least 40~50 times, possible more, including in shops where 'techs 'exaggerated' about their motorcycle experience (actually, they just flat out lied )

BTW, I think you already checked but manifolds are close to correct length should really be slightly longer for max rpm performance.
As your leaving filler/dipstick unpainted, drill 1/16" holes in top 'corners', like it's a race bike and going to be safety wired (I do ;D )

Re: 74 and 75 CB360 tracker - motor running!! Video, one little prob though.

It is entirely possible I fitted the rings incorrectly. I will pull and check. can you post a pic of proper fitment by any chance? Thanks for the input. and the education continues!

Re: 74 and 75 CB360 tracker - motor running!! Video, one little prob though.

It's been covered multiple times, I'm not sure which computer or hard drive I have pics on.
Numbers or letters next to ring end go upwards, top ring has chrome face (light gray 'rim') middle ring is all 'black' cutaway down
If I can find pic I'll post it up. I don't think it's actually shown in most service manuals

Re: 74 and 75 CB360 tracker - motor running!! Video, one little prob though.

Here's a clip out of the shop manual, The ring set I got was factory Honda an the second ring had a notch instead of an angle like the picture. other than than they were the same.

Thanks for this guys, I'll check the rings tomorrow.

Re: 74 and 75 CB360 tracker - motor running!! Video, one little prob though.

That's one of the pics I have but it isn't scanned to computer.
The middle ring taper is only about 1.5 degrees so isn't really visible.
The 'notched' ring has a taper, notch goes DOWN flat face UP

Re: 74 and 75 CB360 tracker - motor running!! Video, one little prob though.

Its in that PDF shop manual scan someone did a while back and it resides on my desktop where I can find it in a hurry. ;)

Yeah, but that picture is earlier CB350 with one piece oil ring and slightly different style middle ring

Re: 74 and 75 CB360 tracker - motor running!! Video, one little prob though.

WOW
I'm so happy to have stumbled onto this project. These are the kind of builds that make us tingle in the pants.
Thanks so much for sharing, I'll be stalking this page till she's all done.
Good luck with the rest!!!

Re: 74 and 75 CB360 tracker - motor running!! Video, one little prob though.

Thanks guys, gaskets showed up today so she should go back together by Saturday. keep your fingers crossed and your pants tingling.

Re: 74 and 75 CB360 tracker - motor running!! Video, one little prob though.

Got her back together and running yesterday! Sounds great! no smoke!! I need to shorten the throttle cable a bit as I can't quite get to wide open. The cable kit came from DCC and I have to say that it worked out really well. Easy to use and and get a custom length cable.

Re: 74 and 75 CB360 tracker - motor running!! Video, one little prob though.

Congrats diesel.

Finished pics?

Congrats buddy.

Re: 74 and 75 CB360 tracker - motor running!! Video, one little prob though.

No congrats just yet. No oil up top. FUCK. Its def not top end plugged as I made sure of that. I also blew out the crank case passages with air. Going to pull the right cover and and see if I can figure out what is up. She does sound mean though!

Re: 74 and 75 CB360 tracker - Problems resolved!! New Video!!

With a lot of help on the phone with CrazyPJ (thanks Peter!) and from some guys on Hondatwins I was able to determine that i do have oil in the top and its safe to ride!! Bike starts right up and runs through the gears nice. There is one little flat spot in 3rd gear at the high end of the rev range where you'd want to shift but that is the only blemish. got her right up to 65 on the street next to my shop and she pulls like a 500! Thinking that if that isn't a jet issue I may be able to rectify that with some work on the points etc. I think from now on I'm just going to switch all these full on builds to electronic ignition.

Here's a little video for you, Pictures will follow as soon as I have time.
