74 and 75 CB360 tracker - Need to get some pics done of this.

Re: 74 and 75 CB360 tracker - Engine built and mounted!!

Okay, been a while. I got straight out with stuff for a while but progress has been made. I got the paint straightened out and looking good. And I should have the wiring 100% sorted today. I was able to fit everything under the tank by just shortening the harness. pretty easy. One little gremlin that has me scratching my head; I got the headlight wired in after finding that the ground in the bucket was bad. I eliminated that and wired the ground to the harness, problem solved. I've eliminated the on/off switch, hardwiring the light on. After wiring the light in I clicked the Hi/Lo beam switch and it worked perfectly for about 4 or 5 clicks then went black. Tail light still on. checked all the fuses, fine. thought it might be the switch, checked that for a short inside and can't see any thing. Here's the weird part; when you put a voltage meter on the switch leads they show power at the appropriate wire depending on switch position. Then I thought maybe my new connecters were bad but when you touch direct power to them the light works. ??? But when I wire the light to the switch leads, nothing. hmmm??? going to pull the connectors next and try bare wire to see what happens.

any other thoughts? Anyway, I'm no electrical whizz but it can't be too major. Once thats done its time to get her running and hit the punch list.

Re: 74 and 75 CB360 tracker - Engine built and mounted!!

This is why it's easiest to strip the wiring harness into individual wires, then wire everything from scratch. It's so much easier and it makes chasing down issues a breeze. When you're all done and everything works like it should, you remove the harness and wrap it up.

Yeah, I'm kind of coming to that conclusion myself. It turned out it was just a bad connecter. wiring is done! I just need to shorten some things and clean it up a wrap it. I buffed out the paint work today and got gas for the welder so I can tack the exhaust brackets on. I 'm going to fire her up over the weekend looks like!

Let's see some recent pics Diesel! - Stout

Re: 74 and 75 CB360 tracker - Engine built and mounted!!

Finished up the paint work yesterday. I went with a flat black pinstripe where the two colors meet, very subtle, and I think pretty sharp. Well, I say finished, the tank needs some sort of graphic on it but I haven't figured out quite what yet. I will get some pics up soon. Once I get the exhaust tightened up it will be ready to fire.

Re: 74 and 75 CB360 tracker - Engine built and mounted!!

Okay, big day today. got her fired up and I fucking love the exhaust note!! The bad news is she's blowing shit tons of oil out the exhaust. its not actually blowing out the back end but is dripping where the pipe meets the collector. I'm thinking that that much oil that quick must be coming from the top and down somehow. I need to check with my buddy who did the valve job to be sure he did a leak down test. I believe he did. Any other thoughts? I'm pretty certain the rings were properly aligned (mis aligned). And I don't think that that much oil could get up and out through the rings that quickly.

Sorry I had the camera all back asswards;

Re: 74 and 75 CB360 tracker - motor running!! Video, one little prob though.

Did you put new valve seals? That may cause your issue. Have to watch the video at home, no speakers here at work.

Re: 74 and 75 CB360 tracker - motor running!! Video, one little prob though.

i'm checking with my shopmate, Tom, who did the valve work, he's pretty meticulous but mistakes do happen. luckily this motor allows you to work up top without pulling it from the frame.

Re: 74 and 75 CB360 tracker - motor running!! Video, one little prob though.

Mine blew oil for a bit after I started it the first time. I SOAKED the pistons in oil a few days before I started it and they still had quite a bit on top of them. The pipes then had to warm up and burn the rest out. Went away after a while running.

Re: 74 and 75 CB360 tracker - motor running!! Video, one little prob though.

That motor sounds healthy.

Re: 74 and 75 CB360 tracker - motor running!! Video, one little prob though.

Yep, that sounds awesome. It may be residual oil from the build. run it for a bit and see if the oil level is dropping in the engine. It may clear as everything seats in.

Re: 74 and 75 CB360 tracker - motor running!! Video, one little prob though.

The worst smoke was immediate when the bike fired for the the first time. There was no way oil would have had time to get up into the head and then down through valve seals and out. I'm betting if I clean the pipes out now and run it a while it clears up. Just freaks you out a bit when you see that right away.

Re: 74 and 75 CB360 tracker - motor running!! Video, one little prob though.

Naaa build more engines, you will see it. Last time I did one was on an old dodge flat head 6. That puppy smoked for 2 days trying to get the exhaust pipe warmed up enough to get it out. And with no valve seals it still drank oil as much as it did gas.

Re: 74 and 75 CB360 tracker - motor running!! Video, one little prob though.

Haven't had a chance to run it again but I'm not really worried after talking to a few folks and hearing what you all have to say. seems to be pretty common.

Re: 74 and 75 CB360 tracker - motor running!! Video, one little prob though.

Okay so check that, I'm worried now. I haven't had a chance to shake this down but started back in yesterday. she starts right up no problem but is still smoking and blowing oil. Also, looking in the exhaust tappets areas reveals no effing oil up top. RRRRR.

after what happened with my 200 I was super careful about those passages and the oil pump. Looks like I'll have to pull at least covers and try to see whats up.

Any way caught it before I did any real damage just more time now.

Re: 74 and 75 CB360 tracker - motor running!! Video, one little prob though.

Did you fill the bath tubs up top with oil? Get a OIL CAN and fill it up and squirt them full. First time start takes a bit to get the oil up top. Hell, before I started mine the first time I filled the top end full till it ran out the tappet holes and then fired it up.

Re: 74 and 75 CB360 tracker - motor running!! Video, one little prob though.

My concern is that there is quite a bit of oil being blown out the exhaust. I believe its leaking internally. One thought I had last night was that the head gasket was leaking into the cylinders but if it is its not leaking at all externally so I think that is unlikely. The only thing I could think of other than the aforementioned valve seals is that the rings aligned on one or both cylinders but I find that an unlikely scenario too. I guess its all just guessing until it gets pulled apart again.

Re: 74 and 75 CB360 tracker - motor running!! Video, one little prob though.

Before you pull it apart. Put oil in the head, let it sit overnight, then slowly bring a piston to TDC on a cylinder with not plug and see if there is oil in the cylinder, do the same for the other side. It will tell you if the valve seals are leaking. Actually you can move the engine by hand to check the intake valves and exhaust valves this way. If you move the piston to TDC on the compression stroke, then go past it will open the exhaust valve and you can see if oil leaks in, then go one stroke past for intake valves etc. IT might save a total tear down, then again, it may not I am on beer 13 of good Canadian Beer.

Re: 74 and 75 CB360 tracker - motor running!! Video, one little prob though.

There's "good" Canadian beer?? If so I hope its celebrating the Bruins win over the fucking Canucks!! What a bunch of punk ass bitches! and our Brad Marchand's a maritimer!!

I'll run those tests though they sound reasonable!!

Well there is no such thing as bad beer, just beer, and good beer ;D
