Grabbed four new collars from the dealer, only $5 a piece so why not.
So after letting her idle for a few minutes, I shut her down to swap the bent collars to the other side to confirm that was indeed my problem. Now nothing. First kick tumbled over a few times but everything after that I'm getting barely a pop. Weird.
Trying to figure what could cause her to fire up (first kick) and run strong for a few minutes, then give me nothing a half hour later? Battery still putting out ~13v. Heading down to check out the coils and condenser, but I doubt they're the culprit since it started and ran. She's being finicky on me. Forecast says rain right up to the weekend, but the registration/plates are coming in today so I have a few rainy days to iron this stuff out.
Right side coil showing an open circuit at the plug wire. Must have burnt out when I left the key on. But...I did have spark on that side this morning. Shrugs
Video above was from this morning. Doesn't sound like it's running on one cylinder but then again what do I know
No idea what's going on now. Had her fired up and idling strong last night. First kick today and she fired up, stalled out, now I'm getting nothing. Arggghhhhhh.
Gotta be an electrical issue. Maybe the stator isn't charging and draining the battery?

Edit: The REAL culprit is a short in the wire leading to the kill switch. I was able to reproduce the cut out a couple times by turning the handlebars. Not 100% sure where it is yet but we're on the way there.
Took her down the road and she cut out right at the end of the street. Wiggled the wires around down there and she fired and got me back up the hill to the house. Yanked the seat and tank off to figure out whats going on down there. She rides like a CHAMP though!
So I know I've renamed this build a few times. "Boomerang" seemed like a good idea to pair with the paint scheme, but its not really a name, and its sure as hell not sexy. So I've decided on Luna, for all the nights I've laid awake planning what to do or how to do the next mini-project, and for the blue and gold scheme that always reminds me of a big ol' harvest moon. :
Re: '74 CB 360 Cafe Build - Luna (renamed) and First Ride!
Is that your work or a PO? I dealt with all kinds of that crap and only occasionally had myself to blame. Last week I was firing on one cylinder and figured out I put the power wire on my coil beside the blade instead of inside the sheath. Fixed the misfiring and anemic power from before that happened too!
That's my handiwork. I completely overhauled the wiring harness, and I'd say 1 out of about 50 crimps being sloppy isn't too bad. Figures it was something important like the kill switch ;D
I've had that before too. I actually used the OEM bullet connectors for the coils themselves, cleaned them up and soldered them back on the coils. They make me feel a bit better than the blades. Next project I'm just gonna buy a boatload of the bullet connectors and say forget it with these connectors. Although the ones with the weatherproof jackets are pretty nice.

I've got a bag full of deutch connectors from old wiring harnesses from work. I hope to use those on a bike someday. I am really looking forward to rewiring a bike and I think my cj360 is a good candidate because of the electrical upgrades it has already received.

Took her out for a 45 mile ride today. Ran real smooth, handled well. Had a bit of clutch slip, really noticeable into first gear, right about when fully into gear.
I'd say she's pretty close to being done. Maybe next weekend I'll buy a few sets of plugs and do some rounds of chops, but tbh she pulls pretty well through all the gears and there weren't any noticeable flat spots. Here's a glamour shot from the ride today.
Just wanted to give a quick thank you to all of you guys here who have helped me out along the way to get to this point. The information and input from this forum has been invaluable and I really appreciate it.
This week I will post some close ups of some of the details for future reference, the rear brake setup and the like.

I actually took the old harness, cleaned it up, and ended up extending a lot of the wires and modifying connections to fit my use and the way I rerouted everything. I reused the OEM connectors by taking my dremel w a cut wheel and shaving the part they crimp over the wire until the copper is exposed, then prying open the part that crimps over the wire jacket. Add a little solder, re-crimp over the jacket and good as new.
Re: '74 CB 360 Cafe Build - Luna (renamed) and First Ride!
Took her out to get a sticker and for a quick 15 miler today. Had some issues.
When I got back yesterday, the idle was a bit high. Today, I adjustEd the idle speed to get her right. Was going slow behind a truck and stalled out. Took a few kicks to get her going. Messed with the idle knob again and had her running ok. Then after getting inspection, she started misfiring, sounded like right side but I'm not sure.
First course of action is gonna be to resync the carbs, order a few diff size jets and then do some plug chops come the weekend. Probably running a bit lean and needs some tuning.
Re: '74 CB 360 Cafe Build - Luna (renamed) and First Ride!
Did you adjust A/F mix needles to achieve fastest idle? If these two are out of adjustment she will not be creating optimum burn for most power at idle. With the uni-filters shes probably running rich. They may be causing the slides to lift too early. Dumping excess fuel into the mix before shes running a high enough rpm (throttle butterfly open enough and feeding her enough air) to handle it.
Did you send the carbs to PJ for his voodoo?
Do you have stock Honda diaphragms installed. (seems others have reported having good luck w JBMs, My bike hated the JBMs ran WAY to rich, unridable) New Honda diaphragms, slides and springs made a world of difference. It was atleast ridable after that. W the addition of the digital o2 sensor. I went on to make more changes and got her running as good as a stock 360 is capable.
I swap between stock boxes w good filters and K&Ns...she runs the same w same jetting under 6500 rpm. Better 6500 and up w the K&Ns. I believe stock boxes become a bit restrictive to flow above 6500rpm. On my bike in particular anyways.
TBH I have only done minimal tuning. I have the A/F screws at 2.5 turns out from bottom. If I get time tomorrow I'm gonna throw the bottle on, make sure the carbs are synced up and play with the A/F mixture. Assuming I will be adjusting idle with these screws with the idle knob backed all the way off?
Yep. Haven't replaced anything on the carbs with the exception of that bowl with the cracked drain tube.
Wouldn't the UNI's cause her to run lean? Increased airflow w/the same fuel input as with stock...unless the construction of the UNIs restricts the airflow, which would cause a rich condition? ???
Haven't sent them to PJ. I thought I'd be on the road much sooner so I kept them around the whole summer while I was doing fab work. :
