Thanks mate. She's loud as hell down the road but I love it. Don't have the guts to pack the muffler just yet 8)

Re: '74 CB 360 Cafe Build - Luna (renamed) and First Ride!

By my experience it really dont matter where the A/F mix needles are set. I know guys preach 1.5 turns. But counts dont matter a hoot.

Just get her idling as close to 1200 as you can. Then start turning a needle, IN (leaner). Slowly in steps, Like a 1/4 turn at a time for starters, Stop and let the mix needs a second to settle so you can see/hear what you got. then a bit further. Just When idle slows STOP. and start turning it OUT (richer). Keep going until idle slows...THIS will be harder to judge. A good quality handheld tach on the crankshaft comes in handy to see the difference, its hard to see 50rpm w the stock tach. If it dont seem to slow after a few complete turns out...go back IN to where it slowed and turn back OUT til you reach fastest idle speed and stop there.

THEN readjust idle speed screw to 1200 and switch to the other carb...repeat steps. IN then out...In then out.

Readjust idle speed screw to 1200. and return to first carb...This time it may just need like an 1/32- 1/8 turn to hit fastest idle. Adjust idle speed screw back to 1200 and tweak other carb in.

DONE.

CLear as mud ?

Re: '74 CB 360 Cafe Build - Luna (renamed) and First Ride!

ONLY adjust carbs when shes good and HOT. Making adjustments on a cold engine w cause fuel to re-condense.

And only on the center stand. I stick a board under the front tire to get her sitting level front to back also.

If you make adjustments on sidestand it will be a little rich once shes sitting upright under you.

Re: '74 CB 360 Cafe Build - Luna (renamed) and First Ride!

I really need to make a video about all this...so guys can see the effects on the O2 sensor.

Gonna have to get a handheld tach since I'm not running one. Been going by the "seat of the pants" tach, very precise ;)

Thanks for advice. Keep you posted when I start messing around.

Grabbed a couple of diff types of tachs from Amazon, one digital that reads off the crankshaft and one inductive that reads off the plug wires. Will see how they both work.

You should definitely make a video. Would be helpful for tuning noobs like myself ;D

When it comes to hand held tachs you definitely get what you pay for. Most people arent crazy enough to spend that kind of cake.

I am lucky enough to have a Deumo analog tach at my disposal. Inherited it some years ago.
When it comes to tachs...and Ive used several, on the job, over the years...Analog always beats digital, no contest.

Yikes! Thats a chunk of change. Usually I don't mind investing in tools but that's just a lot of cheddar for a backyard builder  The digital tach I grabbed was claimed to have been tested next to a high end tach and was only off by 2 RPM. When I get the GS running I'll test them both out on that and see how they compare to the tach on that.

Yep that will do just fine. I sure wouldnt have paid what mine sells for. Digital can just be a bit slow checking variations in speed. Since you will be keeping more or less 1200 it will be perfect. Just give the carbs and tach a few seconds to cope w changes.

Re: '74 CB 360 Cafe Build - Luna (renamed) and First Ride!

Something you will find is it wont idle dead steady. This is due to fuel being consumed from the bowl (leaning it out) then the float valve opens and refills (richening her up again) rpm will rise and fall very very slightly as this process is continually happening. So if you concentrate you will begin to hear it, rhythmically. Every 10-20 seconds or so.

Just be sure to reset the idle back to 1200 once you have one carb done and switch to the next. And go through them both twice to really get her dialed in nice.

And get them synced BEFORE messing w air fuel mix. Otherwise youre wasting your efforts.

Re: '74 CB 360 Cafe Build - Luna (renamed) and First Ride!

She was misfiring and running REAL poorly due to one of the bolts holding the points plate vibrating loose, resulting in the plate rotating and throwing the timing way out of line.

On to syncing and dialing in the idle.

Getting all too much noise from the cam chain. It seems as though the adjuster mechanism is not working, though it was moving freely when I sealed the cases. I tried loosening the adjuster lock nut/bolt while she's idling for a dynamic adjustment, but no effect. I've heard of manually pushing the tensioner in through the oil drain bolt below the tensioner lock bolt, but I don't want to push it too tight.

I dont know...but doing THAT sure dont sound right.

Having a tough time getting these carbs synced up. Basically get em to within 4 cm/Hg and any further she stalls out and won't start.

I had a tough time bench syncing. The adjuster screw is just about all the way backed out, maybe something in the sync assembly is bent?

Re: '74 CB 360 Cafe Build - Luna (renamed) and First Ride!

That's not a big surprise.

You're meant to be between 16 and 24 cm/Hg at idle.

To clarify, I meant the two values were within 4 cm/Hg of each other. The smoothest idle came with left side at about 18 cm/Hg and right side at 22 cm/Hg. Any more or less turns on the adjuster from that value result in higher values on both ends.

So basically, I'm in the right area, but I can't get the two values to line up.

Re: '74 CB 360 Cafe Build - Luna (renamed) and First Ride!

You'll need to adjust the the idle screw as you go.

The idle screw controls the butterfly valve on the left carb and the linkage controls the valve on the right carb, in relation to the left.

Back to the bench we go...

When I went about bench syncing originally, the spring between throttle plate stops was completely compressed and holding me from adjusting any further. I took an extra spring I had lying around and made a short spring about 3/16" uncompressed. This allowed me to get a much closer bench sync, and hopefully I will have enough room on either side for proper synchronization.

That's the screw position when bench synced.

After reinstalling the carbs, she fired up and is running smoother than ever. However, now my vacuum readings are even further off. Go figure. Left carb is running around 15 cm/Hg, and right is running around 40. Ignition timing is right on both sides.

Right header noticeably cooler than left. Something funky is going on the right hand side.

Re: '74 CB 360 Cafe Build - Luna (renamed) and First Ride!

Yup.

You're still out of sync. I suspect the right butterfly is fully or almost fully closed.
