'75 CB550K1 Gulf - Round...3, the fun stuff

Re: '75 CB550 Gulf - round two

Have to admit, felt sick when I seen the post title, thought you were starting from scratch again and going another direction with the bke. Glad you're not. Love the fairing concept. I've been thinking of making one for my MB5 so I'll be watching your progress.

BTW, I like the first pic the most.

Re: '75 CB550 Gulf - round two

Thanks HerrDeacon. I like the first one too, but maybe the second will give someone some fresh ideas.

And I forgot to add earlier, I really can't call it the LeMans special. It's just too hokey, plus I've never called it that in real life. I think it prefers the "Gulf bike" anyways. :)

Re: '75 CB550 Gulf - round two

With such a distinctive seat and tank, I'd be tempted to push the design envelope a little further. On old bikes, the engine is a major part of why they look so cool, so maybe a top half fairing incorporating some design element from the work done so far might work.

Perhaps that knee/seat flutes could be incorporated into a half fairing that "steps" down lower in front of the motor. Would be hard to get teh right lines but could look like a mini CB1100RC fairing or a Kat in terms of integration.

CF is always good to see in small doses, alloy rims are a must, rear inner fender is another must on my lists, maybe a box section swingarm to stiffen up the back end and how about a fork swap to say CV650 conventional forks in custom triples and spoked wheels.

Or more modern wheels and suspension - but not too fat. Would fix flexy forks, limp swingarm and heavy wheels and limp brakes in one fell swoop.

Re: '75 CB550 Gulf - round two

I like the idea of not covering that tank at all. You could also use the line in your knee dent as a good stopping point for your fairing.

Excuse the awful MSPaint mock-up:

Just a thought, man.

Re: '75 CB550 Gulf - round two

Teazer, Justin, thanks fellas, exactly what I'm looking for. I'll do some more photoshops tonight. Regarding the suspension swap, that's something I've been considering for a while. This winter I might just have to go for it...

Hahaha. Well, let's hope that's not the standard reaction...

Pff.. if a bike doesn't make people instantly pee on themselves when they see it (either in fear or admiration).. well.. what's the point?

Re: '75 CB550 Gulf - round two

Going along the lines of Teazers advice, you could always run an upper fairing and a belly pan, leaving the motor exposed.

Something like this:

I am, sir. I figure I didn't quite learn my lesson with the tank and seat. :)

You really are a glutten for punishment! ;)

Looks great though. Take lots of pix. Can't wait.

Re: '75 CB550 Gulf - round two

Ringo, your build thread was the first one that I really read the whole way through and I really love the way your bike came out. I can't wait to see they redux. I'm a fan of fairings when they're done right.

Re: '75 CB550 - the "Le Mans Special" - she lost 90 lbs on her diet

wow 93 pages- it's a novel.
that is one bold color choice- and done well!

Re: '75 CB550 Gulf - round two

I love the belly pan and fairing. Thought that thing couldnt get better. side not, and not the only reason I am commenting, but did you sand blast your crankcase? if so how did you keep the aluminum so clean.

This thing will look meaty and aggressive with dual discs. I hope you get it done before summer, because I want to see it.
Good luck

Re: '75 CB550 Gulf - round two

John83, thank you sir.

1976cb356, the crankcase was just painted, the covers were bead blasted. As far as keeping the raw aluminum clean... A little wipe down with degreaser every couple hundred miles does it for me...
