'75 CB550K1 Gulf - Round...3, the fun stuff

Re: '75 CB550 - foam dust smells like...?

yep, that is why I was glad I could mold my seat plug outside. Can't wait to see what you came up with for the tank.

Re: '75 CB550 - foam dust smells like...?

Ha Ha. That is a great pic! Let's see some pictures of the progress!

Ha. Good call Brandon!

Nice GP, uncanny resemblance.

Like I said I have no shit-pile-of-foam before pics. And as I was head to toe covered last night, I didn't want to take out the good camera. I'll take some tonight of where it's at, and go from there.

Re: '75 CB550 - foam dust smells like...?

yeah, that floral foam dust gets EVERYWHERE, i shaped my seat with floral foam in my kitchen a while back, and i'm still cleaning that crap up

Re: '75 CB550 - foam dust smells like...?

Alright, I lit a fire in the shop and snapped a few pics of last night's start. There's still loads more sanding to be done and I have to fill in some more foam in the areas that were exposed by the sanding. But it's a start.

Re: '75 CB550 - foam dust smells like...?

Awesome idea with using the bottom of the tank to build off of. Tank is looking great! What are you going to use to fill the voids? I think you have inspired me to build one in the same fashion out of old CX500 tank that is rusted out.

Re: '75 CB550 - foam dust smells like...?

I actually just filled most of them. Simply cut back the foam and fitted/glued in new pieces. Once it's dry I'll sand down to match. I'm avoiding spray foam because it sands differently than the florist foam, and it's a messy nightmare. Plus as it dries, it expands and would likely split apart the other foam at the seams.

Oh sweet sweet game. Too bad my xbox Red Ringed.

Re: '75 CB550 - foam dust smells like...?

I admire what you are doing here. Makes my projects look rather elementary. Keep up the good work man, I am watching closely!

Re: '75 CB550 - (semi) final tank shape

Tyler, I attribute it more to my lack of intelligence. Banging your head against the wall is fun when you don't know any better!

Alright, I've got the basic shape now. My first impression is that it's too tall. I much prefer a big tank and all, but there's a fine line, and I think I just crossed it. Keep in mind though that there's still an hour or two of finishing left to do in which it will lose about 1/8-3/16" from the surface in most places, and have the rest of the holes filled in. But I want to hear from the hive mind. How does it rub you.

For reference, here's a pic of the original plan. The knee indents are longer because my legs aren't that short, but I think it's close. And remember, the top clamp isn't on, so that area looks a little shorter.

Re: '75 CB550 - (semi) final tank shape

I do like the overall shape- except for the sharp edge at the rear. It's tough for me to say it's too tall without actually seeing the top clamp/ hand controls/ seat/ etc mounted up.

Great work though Chris.

Re: '75 CB550 - (semi) final tank shape

You're getting there man. Like you said its still a bit too big. Going to look good though.

Don't forget to put what ever bars you'll be using on the bike so you can gauge clearance. Better to have an idea of any issues before glassing.

Re: '75 CB550 - (semi) final tank shape

I like it. I like modern sport bike with a nob to the old cafe racer. In the drawing/composition, I think you pulled it off well.

Re: '75 CB550 - (semi) final tank shape

Ya, the drawing is great.
The actual shape youve come up with may be pretty uncomfortable to "lie down" on with low bars and rearsets though. Maybe just slope the back down a bit, and lose the sharp edge. The smoother your lines, the easier it will be to lay glass on it as well.

Re: '75 CB550 - (semi) final tank shape

Yeah me too. Looks great in the rendering, but not quite there yet in real life. I'm afraid the back end is going to punch you right in the bottom of the ribcage.

Re: '75 CB550 - (semi) final tank shape

Seems everyone agrees here, and I will have to jump on board with them, the back end just does not flow! The front is rounded and curvy while the back is square and boxy. I did a quick illustration for you to give you an idea of what I think would work nicely. You can see the outline line and the knee dent line, I would go a little deeper and more concave in the dents to exaggerate that line some more!

Re: '75 CB550 - (semi) final tank shape

OH MAN!!!! I just noticed it in that pic... MOVE THAT LIGHT! That really fine foam dust can ignite. Even from just a hot lightbulb.

Re: '75 CB550 - (semi) final tank shape

Thanks for the honest opinions guys. Seems we have a common idea here...! I tend to lose my objectivity when I stare at something for hours on end!
Brandon- that's a great illustration. The back is indeed to high, and will probably lose at least an inch, probably more from the mid-point back. I'll aim for near your line, but I still need to keep a slight angle in the back as I'm taking the top indent line around the back from dent to dent. But it will be a much more obtuse angle back there. As far as height in the back, I'm using my xs400 tank as a reference. It sits about 5" and is too short in back to comfortably lie down on. I'm shooting for a 6-7" height with this one, and I'm sure I overshot it yesterday.

Yeah Mike, that light was only used for backlighting the glass from below while I was drawing the top profile onto the glass to cut it out, making sure I didn't get too close to the metal layer. You can see it a few pages back. And let me say, that foam dust DOES burn nicely!

And that's just the thing, I have none of them yet. The top clamp will be a billet piece with recessed holes for the gauges, so everything will still be really low up front. And it will take some time to make. And the seat is dependent on the tank, shape-wise. Guess I just have to wing it for now!

I don't have any way to check clearance yet, but judging by the lower tree from stop to stop, there will be issues. I was planning on just increasing the stop size.
