76 CB360, Cherry Bomb at Barber's

Re: 76 CB360, New tach cable seal is leaking.

Tach drive seal is a PITA to do properly, you have to take the rocker cover off, remove the retaining clip and punch the entire unit out.
It's too easy to break off the drive tang hooking it out from the front (plus the drive shaft usually gets scored causing new seal to leak)
I've done a couple, still takes an hour or so though
I can sell you a plug with 'O' ring ;D

Yep now that you say that, it is coming back to me. Thats how I did it the first time to replace it. While the cover was off. grrr
maybe once I get back from kentucky Ill dig into it.

ALSO, I cant hardly believe it and Im sure you wont.
I rode the 50 mile round trip to work (+ 5 extra miles to stop at Honda dealer) for the first time on the new tires. When I got home I stopped and pumped 1.14 gallons. Fuel mileage has almost doubled. Basically 55 miles on just over 1 gallon, now. Maybe 30 mpg before Avons.

I never got more than 45 mpg when gas was good (1978 ). I am getting about 40 now. My nh750 gets 47 avg and I have seen 54 mpg on a long highway trip.

It may be my riding, but the 360's were never the top mpg bikes. I often hit reserve at 70 miles, sometimes get 80. But never more then that.

I do wring it out a bit. But still the750 on a bad day does better then the 360 on a good one.

Re: 76 CB360, New tach cable seal is leaking.

I get about 109 miles per tank, reserve isn't working right, I'll have to fit the new fuel tap sometime ;D
Katana is also only doing about 120 miles to a tankful which is a bit crazy as its 4.75 gal tank It is good for around 135+ though which is pretty good for a 600 Kat :)

Re: 76 CB360, New tach cable seal is leaking.

I usually get about 80-90 before the reserve and another 15-25 on reserve depending on which road I take.

Isnt the 360 tank like 3.4 gallons? I got that old CL350 tank at 2.4 gallons.

Cb360 is 2.9 g. Total. 0.9 of that is reserve

Mine (2.4) doesnt seem so far out of line, after all. But I am still planning to add the aux 1/2 gallon bottle (canteen) just for the ride on the trip. Cause that kind of mileage increase still seems kinda fishy to me. LOL

Honda FSM says 2.7g (11 L) for CB, 2.4g (9.0l) for CL

My CB360 OM says 2.9g (11 L) for CB.....

11 L = 2.9 Gal, so the FSM has a little math error there.

I never remember getting more than 45MPG ever from my CB36). Bath when we had gas shortages in the 70's, MPG became important. I was checking. Consdering cars were getting 15 on a good day, 25 for a compact (My 62 VW Bettle got about 25 MPG), 45 was still a nice number.

US gallon =3.88l
UK gallon = 4.54l
Pretty sure it doesn't account for discrepancy though?

Re: 76 CB360, Points gap @ .011

OK, I figure a year is enough time to stretch any "new" out of the cam chain. I reset the cam chain tensioners for the first time since build (last fall).
the little pads on my advancer weights are worn out, letting the weights just flop around on the springs.
So a fresh-er advancer... I disassembled, cleaned, lubed, checked 12 degree advance rotation and installed the "new to me" advancer. Static timed points "properly" and timed w Strobe Light. Everything is spot on dead nuts perfect. Had the old lady hold her at 3500 rpm to check advance and its rock solid at the last 12 degree marks, both sides, no bounce, smooth as silk.

the only issue I have, Hondas min gap is .012, my gap drags on the .011 feeler. I tried what I can to increase the gaps. adjusted the bottom of the points both ways. And obviously the stationaries. But cant get her timed with anymore gap. I have always kept the lever things lubed so I cant imagine they have worn to much in 2 years 3500 miles.

thus I am gonna call it good...enough.

If you got an idea or a detailed write up bout timing. that would be great.

Re: 76 CB360, Happy mothers day dear!

Dragging is OK. Use a go/no-go method. If .011" fits but .012" doesn't then the gap is .011". I'd be willing to bet you can fit .014" or so if .011" is just dragging.

AND Sonreir saves my day. thats good enough for me. Yes I can get a .012 in there. Thanks bud, AND I forgot to mention that I did file em just a touch in order to get rid of a small dome. So now they fit fully flat faced.

Re: 76 CB360, Points gap at .011

I try and use 0.014", don't forget, points gap also sets the dwell.
Smaller gap will give coils more time to charge but can also cause misfire at higher rpm
Correct size front tyre will make speedo maore accurate, the oversize AVON makes speedo run slow so you can't get accurate mpg figure
Thinking back, I'm probably getting closer to 40 mpg than 20mpg, maybe the carb mods with K&N are making things work more efficiently?

I would like to get .014 but thats the whole problem. no mater what I try .011 is it. I guess they are just worn out. or not made to spec to start with. If I see any signs of trouble I will replace em.

Re: 76 CB360, Points gap at .011

Everything seems to be running fine, even w the gap being tight. However I scored a set of NOS points on ebay at a really nice price. So, later on I will be swapping the cheap aftermarkets out for these.

Re: 76 CB360, Points gap at .011

Don't forget to put a little high temp grease in the angle between points arm and rubbing block.
I also make sure the felt is stretched up and oiled
I've looked at several 312 advancers and none have rubber buffers

thanks PJ, the weights were just rattling around on the one I took off my bike. Maybe the springs have stretched a bit I wonder? The new one w the bumpers were nice. Im gonna disassemble it again and compare the lobes on the two. Cause I had good gap w the original advancer and cheap points and really the advancer is the only part I changed. maybe the lobe on the new one is out of spec enough to keep the points from opening fully. I doubt it, but its weird. If there is a deference I will pull the good lobe off the one and swap it on the one w good weights and springs. I will hope to find something. I just dont know at this point. She is running great none the less.
