'77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Calling it Done (for now...)

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Tank mods underway!

They do an aerosol version as well, I see.... hmmm....

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Tank mods underway!

OK... so the aerosol version of the PlastiDip is pimp. MUCH better for my needs. It's going to take at least four coats of the stuff, but it's not dripping like wax and looks half-way decent. The attached pic is with two coats already on it. Unfortunately, I couldn't get it in red at my local hardware store, so I settled for black. Still... I think it's going to work.

I also managed to get my swingarm and frame stripped. I've got the first coat of color onto them and I'm planning for at least two more coats.

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Got color?

Well eff me... I just dropped a grand on a bunch of parts. Money goes way too fast...

I should expect in the next couple of weeks:
  • 18 tooth front sprocket
  • 50' white exhaust wrap
  • Integrated LED taillight and turn signal
  • New OEM right switch assembly
  • Two (slightly) used rocker arms
  • AllBalls steering stem bearings
  • Full engine gasket kit
  • New heavy-duty clutch springs
  • Transistorized electronic ignition module
  • Stainless steel allen head engine bolts
  • R/R all-in-one replacement
  • 15uF battery eliminator
  • Vinyl stripes and graphics

Still need to order (or at least pay for):
  • Clubmans or clipons
  • Mirrors
  • Valve springs
  • Cylinder machining
  • Headlamp bucket
  • Mufflers
  • CB360 headers
  • Cam
  • (Possibly) Chain

If I don't update this thread in the next couple of weeks it was because the Mrs killed me. Nice knowing you all. ;D

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Got color?

Not as much done this weekend as I would have liked... The Mrs conscripted me to clean out the garage. It was kind of annoying because it was like Hanukkah all this week with all my parts arriving...

Here's the stack of everything I got this week:
199062_10150170774215159_734955158_8233728_6243706_n.jpg

From rough left to right, top to bottom order:
*Heavy duty-clutch springs
*Battery eliminator (basically a 15KuF capacitor)
*Bronze swingarm bushings
*Vinyl stickers including some vintage Honda logos, checkered racing stripes, and a couple of numbers to go on the tail (the kids' birthdays)
*Some o-rings from CMSNL
*AllBalls steering bearings
*Complete engine gasket set for a CB360
*LED flasher
*Two new (to me) rocker arms
*White Gran Turismo grips from Italy
*18 tooth front sprocket which should give me about 10% longer legs in each gear
*Transistorized ignition assists
*50' white exhaust wrap + stainless steel zip ties
*CB360 caphead bolt set
*New OEM right switch assembly (damn near impossible to find for a CJ at a decent price!)
*Custom copper head gasket to account from my 2mm overbore
*Combination solid state regulator/rectifier

Here's a pic of me just getting started on the ignition. Some assembly required. Unfortunately, it looks like this was designed to work with a dizzy and so I may need to get a second one or find something else to use.

I also had a new VIN tag made in vinyl and so that's now on with a couple layers of clear coat over the top:
195862_10150170774300159_734955158_8233732_2269356_n.jpg

Ignition coils are getting a quick lick of paint to make 'em shine:

Second coat on the rear shocks and they should be ready to reassemble for next weekend:
196225_10150170774395159_734955158_8233734_1484440_n.jpg

I'm done coating my springs in PlastiDip and I'm quite pleased with the results. Using that stuff from the aerosol can is halfway between spray painting and shooting ceiling texture. A smooth finish would have been possible with some more time, but I'm kind of digging the textured look:

I also removed the rubber and glue on my control levers and gave them a bit of a polish:

Here's a pic of the mounting brackets for the coils after I cleaned them up. Also pictured is a heat sink from an old graphics card that I polished. I'm going to use it during the fabrication process for me LED headlight and the polishing will promote better heat transfer:

And finally, some miscellaneous hardware from the rear shocks which I painted up. Hopefully it will stand up to the abuse for at least a little while:

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Got color?

That coating on the springs turned out well! I'm interested to see how it lasts.
Maybe this was already mentioned, but what exactly is it and where did you get it?

The rest of the build is looking great as well! Can't wait to see it all put together!

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Got color?

The coating is called PlastiDip (http://www.plastidip.com/). It's a synthetic rubber compound like the kind you get on the handles of old-school pliers and wire cutters and the like. I tried the "normal" dipping version to begin with and didn't get the result for which I was hoping. The aerosol version worked MUCH better (as you can see), but it ended up taking about 8 coats to get the coverage I wanted as it goes on kind of thin. I'm told this stuff stains pretty easily with dirt and grime, so I'm not overly disappointed that I ended up with black instead of red. The durability should be quite good though, similar to rubber and just as flexible.

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Got color?

Got the first layer of primer onto the tank. I knew it needed more sanding, but the primer was to help identify where.

I also broke down the front wheel and started cleaning things up there... I'm REALLY pleased with the way that's turning out and I think I'm going to skip the paint or powder. You can see from the wheel shot that the spokes don't look too bad, but man do they look good after a clean and polish!

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Got color?

Just got this in the mail today... Now I'm only waiting on pistons (should be shipped out to me Wednesday, hopefully get them before the end of the week) and valve springs (already been shipped, hopefully get those before the end of the week, too).

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Got overlap?

Well I've started devoting some time on the weekdays as well. I really want to get this thing done in time for summer. You guys can expect updates a bit more often.

Last night I spent more time on the front wheel. I forgot to take a before pic of the rust inside the rim, so the before pic here is the rim from the rear wheel.

Here's how the inside of the rims started:
206678_10150205695985159_734955158_8309885_1055640_n.jpg

And here's how things turned out after some wire brushing:
217361_10150205696035159_734955158_8309886_3734288_n.jpg

Still not good enough, and so I used a rust dissolver. It said to not use on chrome, and so some masking was in order:
205550_10150205696090159_734955158_8309887_1661348_n.jpg

And then on with the Rustoleum heavy-duty anti-rust primer. This stuff is (hopefully) pretty good. The can took about 30 seconds of shaking before the marble even came loose and there's a special nozzle and all that...
215449_10150205696175159_734955158_8309890_7256730_n.jpg

And since I was in the neighborhood, one half of the front hub got some loving. Cleaned and polished, but far from scratch free. This bike is no trailer baby. It's going to be ridden and ridden hard, so as long as things looks good, I can do without perfect.

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Got overlap?

Doing Great...

Sorry if I missed it but what paint did you use on the frame? (brand/type/Etc) Also, where/how did you do the VIN vinyl for the frame?

THANKS and keep it up...

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Got overlap?

The paint for the frame is a simple rattle can from Rustoleum. Basic red gloss paint, but I think their internal name for it Sunrise Red (code 7762830).

The vinyl for the VIN was from friend of mine. He gets me a discount because I do all the graphics work myself. They cost me $5 each, but I can get them sent out to anyone for $10 and I'll do the graphics cleanup on those as well.

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Got overlap?

So just picked up a can at True Value or Walmart? Are you/did you use a special clear coat that is heat or oil resistant or anything?

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Got overlap?

Picked up several cans at True Value, yeah. It's not specifically formulated or sold as heat resistant, but enamel paints tend to hold up quite well to heat. They actually can gain a bit of durability if you stick painted parts in the oven at 200°F for ten minutes followed by 300°F for another ten. Also, I didn't use clear coat on the frame, except over the VIN sticker.

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Front Wheel Done

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Front Wheel Done

Agreed.. the brass looks real good..

Quick question for you sir..
In regards to the lacing, is that something an amateur can do? or should I pay some who knows what there doing?

Thanks for your time and the project is coming long real nice..
