'77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Calling it Done (for now...)

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Front Wheel Done

Lacing is pretty easy, if a bit time consuming. This is the first wheel I've ever laced and I found five ways of doing it wrong before I found a way that worked. :)

I'm going to take it to the professionals to get it trued, though.

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Front Wheel Done

Cool.. Time I don’t mind spending, anything learning is worth the time.. and agreed getting it trued by someone else is probably best..

Hey thanks Man..

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Front Wheel Done

Son' did you have any issues taking the speedometer cable out? Mine broke off inside the hub part and I can't get it get it out. I know there is the screw on the outside, but there's also a very small pin on the inside of the hub. Any tips on how you got the whole speedo cable out of there?

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Front Wheel Done

I only removed the cable by first removing the screw. I left the little "spinner thing" alone inside the hub and didn't mess with it.

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Front Wheel Done

Mine must have broken. I've got black plastic surrounding the 'spinner thing' and when take the screw out nothing budges. I'm thinking I may have to drill the black plastic end of the cable that has broken off inside that tube.

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Front Wheel Done

Lemme take some pics of mine when I get home and I'll post them up. Then maybe you can have a better idea what you're up against?

Agreed.. the brass looks real good..

Quick question for you sir..
In regards to the lacing, is that something an amateur can do? or should I pay some who knows what there doing?

Thanks for your time and the project is coming long real nice..

It's not too difficult to lace wheels.
I prefer to fit all the 'outside-in' spokes first (they go from the outside to inside of hub)
Build wheel then fit 'inside to outside' spokes
Here's a WM 3 alloy rim I built onto CB360 hub a few years ago

HelthInsXpert,

I tried to take some pics, but I just couldn't get the detail needed out of my crappy camera. The end of the spinner should look similar to the tip of a flat head screwdriver. There shouldn't really be any extra plastic from the cable, I don't think.

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Front Wheel Done

Got some more parts in the mail yesterday. :D

+2mm over, compression from 9.3:1 to 10:1, and the valve pockets are .020" deeper. Forged, instead of cast, so they weigh in at 210g each; 11g lighter than stock cast pistons too (despite being bigger).

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Front Wheel Done

I didn't know Arias were doing oversize pistons for 360?
Where from?
How much? ;D

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Front Wheel Done

It's not one of their standard orders, unfortunately. I had to have them specially made. After shipping, the cost was $407. Maybe they can get you a set for cheaper than that now that they've got everything specced out? :D

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Front Wheel Done

Also... I hadn't thought to check, but in my pic it appears the ring lands are a lot thinner. One would assume this mean thinner rings as well, right? Thinner rings means less drag and more power! At least I'm hoping so... lol

I'll need to break out the micrometer when I get home and see if I can track down those old rings.

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Front Wheel Done

Have you changed headlight bucket?
Stock 360 is smaller than 7", will it fit with a new rim?

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Front Wheel Done

I ran into that issue with mine, a 450, 500, 550, 750, or GL1000 bucket fits that 7" headlight, 350-360s are 5 1/4" or something like that.

Still waiting on that one from the UK. I'm getting a replica of the Lucas SS700P.

Plasti-Dip says something like: use naphtha, xylene (xylol), or toluene (toluol) solvents to thin or cleanup. You could try a thinner mix.

Try plastic dip spray. I used it on some dirt bike springs and it works really well!

Edit: oops - I should have read your next post. :)

Re: '77 CJ360T (Café SOS) - Rear Wheel Done

Rear wheel disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled this weekend.

This week I'm gonna get the kick stand to the machinist to take out a broken/stuck bolt and also get my swingarm bushings pressed and reamed. I'm also gonna true the wheels and get rubber on them. I might have a roller before the end of the weekend.

The rim has been through the wars, but at least it cleans up OK. Before and after pics provided.
