Re: 79 GL1000 Project "NudieWing"- Lifes more fun naked

Thanks Hoosier, hadn't found that on yet. I tried to get a look at the belts on the wing but couldn't get enough space to get at the front end to take all the bolts out, so I have to wait until I can back her out of the shed some. Sucks you have to unbolt the rad etc. but I need to check them, and if I have to change them the NAPA part# will come in handy.

Cheers

OK, got her out of the shed, that was fun, i buried her in the lawn and had to get plywood out to push her on. anyway rode her to work today and the tail light came in at lunch so I put that on. still waiting on the new signals.

Go big bikes! Nice job on adding some cafe flavor without sacrificing two up cruiser features! I really like what you are doing, man!

And don't listen to these guys on the turbo/ super debate. Unless you really have a good handle on how it all works (more than Wikipedia knowlege), you will blow it up. There is a lot more to doing that than bolting a hair dryer to the intake and putting big jets in, although everyone thinks it would be easy.

Shoot, add the nitrous too. you haven't lived until you have seen the EGT probes on your turboed nitrous bike melted off and stuck through the pipe! ;)

seriously good job on the build!

i havent tried a turbo app... but ive done some serious studying on the subject... once i get the time and money i plan to turbo the ls400 my uncles keeping in his garage until he can transfer the title to me (my gift for 3 years of babysitting my twin cousins for no pay).

as for actually going about it... i think i would feel comfortable giving it a shot... would just start off with lower boost levels so if i do end up fucking something up, its not something on the level of blowing a head off. ;D

Re: 79 GL1000 Project "NudieWing"- Lifes more fun naked

sure takes a lot of tools to change a tailight on one of those goldwings!!!!
looks good, if it turns out smooth i may end up keeping my eye put for one.....
keep up the work looks better allready

Re: 79 GL1000 Project "NudieWing"- Lifes more fun naked

I forgot how HUGE the stock tail light was on these!
Great job, the bike is looking awesome.

Yes it does, bolts to remove, wires to solder, holes to drill etc. Now if it were 100% my bike I would be chopping the rear fender to loose some weight, but have to run that by the father in law first. I was looking at the fender and it has a brace built in so i can't loose it completely. The factory tail light is huge and weighs 5 lbs on it's own. Man and it really wasn't any more visible than the cat's eye. This thing looks better every time I get a chance to do something with it. It has to stay 2-up and touring capable, but it does not need to stay ugly.

as for supercharging, If I had 2, I would try it, but with only the one, I am happy with the current performance. It already will snap your neck back if you twist the throttle quick. It outruns a lot of other vehicles. I think the only thing this thing won't take off the line is a modern sport bike. Puts just about anything else to shame, especially since it has gone on a diet.

I have it set up that I can throw on the backrest and has a quick attach windscreen for cold days or long trips. Cuts just enough wind to keep your arms from getting tired as fast. Now with the new bars it can be tossed around really easy and the slight forward lean makes it easier to rie at highway speeds without the windscreen. The old bars without a screen you really had to hang on any speed above 40 MPH as the wind was really pushing you back.

Cheers,

Thanks Hoosier. Yeah that tail light was friggin insane big. I thought the one on my 450 was big till I got this one off. Thanks for the insiration for the cats eye ;D Once I get the smaller signals on the front I have to figure out where to mount them in the rear. I totally would love to run no signals but the actual owner probably wouldn't go for that. I am going to be sad if i have to give this baby up when I am done. Oh well I will still get to borrow it.

Can't wait to see how you complete yours up.

Cheers

Re: 79 GL1000 Project "NudieWing"- Lifes more fun naked

OK, still waiitng on the friggin signals. Hope they come in today. Anyway, didn;t have a lot of quality time with the bike this weekend as had too many other things to do, plus it was like -5 and windy. But I did get some things done. This may seem like going backwards but this bike has to do it all so without further ado, here she is dressed for touring. Cool thing is it all comes off in less than 2 mins.

Cheers

^ thought you were going nude? ??? Life IS more fun naked! or as most peeps here in the dirty say it, neckid ! I love that orange color! It looks great on that bike, also digging the smaller brake light, nice mod there! Advise: fill those hole in the fender and paint it if you don't want to re-chrome it! I think that orange would look better on it or the epoxy black! Also, look into a new seat or at least a proper fitting seat covering. Not trying to pound on you brother, but the seat keeps pulling my eye to the crooked stitched seems and poor fitment! That bike is getting way to pretty not to have a nice ass pad! Keep up the wrenchin though, its good that you're able to get back to it! I am on an indefinite hold on Eileen right now, with weddings, new job searching, possible relocation.....the list goes on, but you know what I mean! Good luck on the rest of the project, cant wait to see the new signals!

i disrobed her again right after I took the pics. i feel yo on the seat, but it has to stay like that until I can afford to actually do it with the proper materials etc. I crooked seems suck I know. But I have 0 budget as my wife has been unemployed for the last year and money is too tight....but you know what that is like. The fender will hopefully be chopped just below the plate. I wanted to replace it because it weighs a metric ton but it is actually structural. So i think I will chop it, If i can't chop it I will fill the holes and paint it, i want to paint out the front as well and the crash bars, I think satin black. So the whole bike is the orange, satin black and then some polished bits on the motor. This is however still technically my father in laws so i have to run everything by him first. He is the one that wanted to make sure I could put the touring gear on it. at least it all comes off with 4 bolts.

Cheers,

Re: 79 GL1000 Project "NudieWing"- Lifes more fun naked

I feel you on the money for sure! I figured it would be the case of something like that. I had read in hooser's thread were you posted about it being structural on your model! Sounds like you have a cool plan! I hope the Father-in-law don't like it so much he just reclaims it! :p I say fill it! If you shorten it, you may get water stream on your back on a wet road ride! Not cool on a tourer, or for the paw-in-law. Filling and painting the orange would give it a nice clean look!

Re: 79 GL1000 Project "NudieWing"- Lifes more fun naked

You are probably right on that. I am making it as cool as he will allow, and on the tightest budget I can, I will have to see if I can get the paint code, I work with the previous owner.

the rear fender on this wing has a brace built in the underside and bolts in place and ends up part of the frame. So I pretty much have to keep it unless I can get a brace welded in the back.

My signals never showed and I emailed the Ebay clown and he told me they were out of stock. His stupid add had 10 in stock when i bought them now....I hate ebay sometimes, now I have to wait for a refund and get them from someplace else. Told the guy he had my money for 2 weeks and never bothered to tell me. At least my father in law paid me for those, but now I have to get some replacements. Oh well. The crappy thing is there is no place here that I can get that kind of thing unless I want to pay 80+ dollars. So I have to rely on Ebay. I wish the guys who sold me the tail light had some nice signals.

Re: 79 GL1000 Project "NudieWing"- Lifes more fun naked

Ok, signals came in then we had 7 straight days of freezing cold rain and snow. I mounted the new signals, but I did it in the -2 and snow. first day was today I could snap some pics. Much better than the stock. I have been riding her to work every nice day and today i picked my son up at daycare on her. He is the coolest kid there when dad shows up on the motorbike.

Oh yes and the astute people, like twisted will notice the rear are slightly crooked. they will be fixed. I trimmed them some with a dremel to get them to this point but they need a small washer shim cut to get them perfect. With no garage and it snowing on me, i got them good enough to run them until nicer weather, which happened today and I had to do body work on the truck to pass inspection so I will get these mounted strait soon,

For 30.00 shipped they are decent quality and if you look back at her ass in previous pics, big improvement.

Next up when $$ allow, a fork brace and hiding the holes in the fender. Maybe even cutting it, glassing a replacement and just using the brace in the factory.

Cheers,

Re: 79 GL1000 Project "NudieWing"- Lifes more fun naked

Oh Yeah i had her parked at work downtown today, right beside the director of engineering for the city's VTX1800 which is exactly the same colour and i had 3 people tell me they like my bike better. My bike $1000, his bike $15000 (what he paid for it 2 years old). They just said mine looked cleaner, less over done. That is a hoot. I didn't dare tell him.

Re: 79 GL1000 Project "NudieWing"- Lifes more fun naked

Very cool Maritime. Really doing a great job with this monster.

Re: 79 GL1000 Project "NudieWing"- Lifes more fun naked

Thanks Guys, I wish I had access to a garage. After seeing Hoosier's bike stripped and cleaned and painted I really want to do that to this one. It is such a nice bike that a winter in pieces and put back together all freshened up would keep it in the family for another 30 years. My son could be riding this beast at my age. But It won't be going down to the basement like the 450 did. If I can find a place to do it this winter I will tear right into it and freshen everything that needs it. There is just a little rust here and there, faded paint stuff like that. anyway, this thing is a hoot and really does handle quite well for a 600 lb bike. I out turn a lot of the guys on the other big bikes. And the right side twisty thing makes it go really fast. You can easily outrun all cages and all but the crotch rockets. Now, I am going to the in-laws for the weekend so I will be giving the father in law some riding instructions, my wife might try too. That will be cool. So I will get some quality time with the 450. Has not been run in a month. I bet she feels neglected so I will have to take her for a noce long ride along the river, or out to the coast on some of the local twisties.

Cheers,
