Re: 79 GL1000 Project "NudieWing"- Lifes more fun naked

HA HA Joe with the Motor work you are doing I bet you might just get ahead of me ;D However, this bike is a H-4 and as you know, your brothers 1100 probabley hauls even with all the farings bags etc. You get the weight off, + the 1000 are tuned for more speed vrs. the 1100's and these things will go. Big grin factor. Now I just need the fork brace fort he front end to improve corner stabiltiy. It leans over nice but bumpy corners upset it a bit. I have read the brace makes a huge difference on the gen 1 GL's they put them on from the factory on the Gen 2's

Re: 79 GL1000 Project "NudieWing"- Lifes more fun naked

one of my buddies dads has a newer gold wing... cracks us up when he lifts it and walks it one wheel down the road... i love the low end torque they have!

Re: 79 GL1000 Project "NudieWing"- Lifes more fun naked

Yep the torque is sooo fun. The top speed isn't quite as good as a newer bike but from 0-75 MPH is a hoot and if you are over 3K RPM up to 6K it just hauls. I wonder what a n'ked 2004+ wing would be like, probably scare the pants off a person. I think it is the 04 and up that they made handling a priority as well as comfort . I have seen guys take corners on the newer wings that I would have a hard time following on my little bike, let alone the 79 GL.

Cheers,

Some day when I get my Garage this bike will get more than the little work I can do right now.

Where are you again Joe? I think "Bomber" will be on the road in a few weeks, ... ;)

Re: 79 GL1000 Project "NudieWing"- Lifes more fun naked

Well it has been a while. I was supposed to do a bunch of work over the winter, but the bike ended up being 2.5 hours away for the whole winter. I finally broke down and went to get her and the 450. A few hours on the 450 and she is ridable, so the GL is getting all the wrench time. List of things to do.

Polishing up the valve covers (done) and belt covers (half done)
Next is get the motor connections finished and flush and fill rad, oil etc.
then on to wheels, paint and new set of tires bought from Beatnic last year at Barber (Thanks again!)
change fork oil
bleed brakes and change pads if needed
clean rust pf pipes and paint, polish heat shields.
various other touch ups I can squeeze into the budget and she should be ready to ride. I hope the first long ride can be to Deals Gap GTG.

Pics when I get the camera working again or from the phone when I get back to WIFI

Re: 79 GL1000 Project "NudieWing"- Lifes more fun naked

ya buddy! have you thought of swapping out the master? i went to a 5/8 sport bike master Nissin, and it works light years better than stock... just an idea for a cheap mod if you have to bleed the brakes anyway

Re: 79 GL1000 Project "NudieWing"- Lifes more fun naked

yep, that and braided lines (dual from master) like you have done are on the going to do list as soon as the house sells, but I will do a quick bleed and go for now if the house hasn't sold by the time I get to that step.

Cheers

Re: 79 GL1000 Project "NudieWing"- Lifes more fun naked

Ok. Working on pipes. I got one side all wire wheeled an flapper wheeled. Grab the other side and notice a patch. This was under it!

there is a few mm of steel holding the whole thing together. Fuck. I cant buy new pipes so I will have to re-patch for now.

just cut the rust off and re weld that sucker up

Re: 79 GL1000 Project "NudieWing"- Lifes more fun naked

Kind of hard to tell exactly where it rusted for me, but aren't your headers able to be sepperated from the rest of the exhaust? I think mine were from a 78-79 model and what I fit the Sportster take=offs onto. Header ends right under the foot peg.

Re: 79 GL1000 Project "NudieWing"- Lifes more fun naked

ok so I got the reall camera to work so here is some progress. Here is the fixed exhaust painted and mounted with wire wheeled and polished heat shields.

Homely, has all the modcons to! I love timber workshops! My childhood house had 1 ahh Memories

Re: 79 GL1000 Project "NudieWing"- Lifes more fun naked

Nice you get to work on your bike with a roof over your head!
The exhaust and covers turned out sweet Maritime.

Re: 79 GL1000 Project "NudieWing"- Lifes more fun naked

THanks, yes there is a little more room than the 10x12 shed I took the motor out in. I hope once I run the enginew per the paint can instructions that it cures ok and holds up. Good thing is it is the same amount of time I need to fun to flush the cooling system etc. so that will all happen at once, then a ride!

Re: 79 GL1000 Project "NudieWing"- Lifes more fun naked

Nice. Looking good dude. I love the exhaust covers too. Looks like you'll have more room there plus a nice atmosphere.

Re: 79 GL1000 Project "NudieWing"- Lifes more fun naked

Getting closer. I am looking through some of the parts and can't remember how they go back so I have to get some parts fiche pages printed etc. for final re-assembley. Been too long since I took it all apart!
