80' GS750 - "Monster" - Updated 3/4/11 - Pirelli Demon Sport's mounted up

Re: 80' GS750 Cafe Racer - Updated 12/2/10

Glad I found your build thread. I am looking for my 3rd bike project and one of my guys at work has either a '79 or '80 GS750L in a box that he is loosing interest in. I been planting the seed in his head that I would take it off his hands.... although I have never seen one up close.
From what I have heard the "G" and "E" models front axel is at the bottom of the forks while the "L" is at the leading edge of the lowers like yours... wonder what the benefit of either is?
Also, do you (or anyone here) know of a model that had 4 valve heads? The guy at work brought it up and said he thought his might be but wasn't sure ::)

Great base for a project from what I have heard, I'll keep watching, you keep posting!

Found this Vintage GS750 advertisement from back in '79 and thought you'd enjoy...

I think the L is shaft driven, isn't it? And i think it's only a 8 valve. But either way, the 750 is a nice bike. i absolutely love mine!

Re: 80' GS750 Cafe Racer "Monster" - Updated 12/6/10

Today was not a good day for working on the bike.. Between being sick and having to help a Uncle rip up carpet, not much done.

Although, i did get one thing done, and that was taking out the engine. Was actually a lot tougher than i thought it would be, we sat there and tried to yank it out sideways for about 10 min, then we just decided to lay the frame on it's side and lift the frame off the engine. Except i can't do that when putting it back in, don't want to scratch the paint job.

Speaking of paint job, i'm going to go with the Import Monster can Scheme.

Things that are most likely going to be Flat Green: Frame, parts of the wheels, front and rear shocks, swing arm.
Things that are going to be Flat Black: Tail, fuel tank, handle bars
Things that are going to be Flat Silver: Engine, carb, and parts of the pod filters

Kinda up in the air on the rest of the wheels, not sure if i want to go with black or silver.

Anyways, will have a picture of the engine out later in the morning when i wake up. I degreased the crap out of it and i think it looks a lot better, still could use a good soda blast.

Which reminds me again, getting quotes on blasting the frame and engine tomorrow. Anyone know some good local shops?

Don't know who has and who hasn't seen this site: http://www.suzukicycles.org/All-Suzuki/all_suzuki_models.html

Lots of good info on there.

Good progress so far. I just picked up a running and riding GS1100 that I'm loving.

I like the color idea. Looking forward to seeing it on the bike.

Haha, me too.. :D

Here's some pics of the engine, semi-cleaned.

Also got some quotes for Sand and Soda Blasting, should be around $100 - $130 for both blastings.

But, upside, just found out today i got a job, which will help me fund this little project. Excited, haven't had a real job since '07 (was in college).

Re: 80' GS750 Cafe Racer "Monster" - Updated 12/6/10

So, i just ran my frame over to my buddies and sawed off the back end. Starting to look less like a cruiser and more like a Cafe.

The old back end

And this is a image of how much space i have to work with.. man i need a garage..

Congrats on the new job. I was thinking it would be good cost savings to use the old tank and rear cowl, minus the hideous taillight, as a starting point for your seat and tank combo. The lines are already there and you know they fit.Food for thought

Well i know for sure i'm going to use the tank, and i want to fiberglass a new tail for it. I keep pushing off working on the seat/tail..

Was thinking something like this

Re: 80' GS750 Cafe Racer "Monster" - Updated 12/6/10

Finished up the last bit of work i'm going to do today. Took the foot pegs and mounts and wire wheeled the crap out of them!

Before

After

Re: 80' GS750 Cafe Racer "Monster" - Updated 12/7/10

Finished up the mock up for the tail, and i'm really liking it! Was super quick to do too, i don't know why i was fretting it..

I'm considering changing the angle between the back of the seat and the bottom, maybe to 100-110 or something. What do you guys think?

Anyways, here's some pictures:

And i got two new bolts to weld in for the suspension, old one's were stripped and one broke off while trying to get the nut off.

Re: 80' GS750 Cafe Racer "Monster" - Updated 12/7/10

Good progress and congrats on the job!

Thanks man!

Here's a shot of it with the tank, to get a better feel of it. Opinions?

Just rounded the top of it a bit, trying to match the tank's shape a bit. Plus i'll fill in the big gaps with more foam junk, and putty the small stuff.

Re: 80' GS750 Cafe Racer - "Monster" - Updated 12/7/10

I like it. The shape of your seat compliments the tank nicely. Keep up the good work.

Re: 80' GS750 Cafe Racer - "Monster" - Updated 12/7/10

The only thing that concerns me is the size of the seating area itself. You're the only person that can judge that, though. If you've got enough room to sit there comfortably, I say it's good to go. The lines look nice!
