81 CX500 yes, it's true, I lied. Build #5

Thanks for the kind words gentlemen. I got the pan back from the welder today and this guy did it again. With a little finishing touches to the bottom rails it will be off to the upholstery shop.

I like where you're going with this build. I was looking at a CX before I picked up my XS, I liked the uniqueness about them.

I'd make some sort of mold out of that seat pan and market it. CX crowd would definitely dig it, I know I do. ;)

Good thought. I will keep the pattern on hand in case it turns out great.

I got the front fender done and mounted and I do have to admit it looks much better than my usual hack jobs. This bike is a done deal once I get the tank back from getting plated and the seat upholstered.

So I took the seat to a place called Mild to Wild here in town and they sound like they are into what I am trying to do with this seat. I wanted brown leather but all they had was vinyl so I was to bring the color expert, aka wife to pick out some thing. I got to thinking about leather and how to get this done on the cheap so I searched clothing on craigslist, brown leather and came across two woman's full length coats for $25, one black, one brown. Called the upholster back and she was good with the idea. Now if the seller would call m back I can move on. I am of the mind that this tank turned out better than the first one. If it wasn't 9 degrees out I would roll it outside for the shot.

Looks beautiful. I love the tank!

How did you manage to get it polished that well, or is it a chrome paint?

Nickel plated, it has to be straight as an arrow to carry it off though..

I would totally do that to my Honda if I wasn't allergic to nickel :( What did that cost you if you don't mind me asking?

I dropped off the tank as I took it off the bike, they stripped it, soldered three imperfections, copper plated then nickel for $380. I took another one for my first cx that I had spent countless hours polishing and that one was $280.

Eeeeeeek! Big money. But it does look quite nice though.

Well I am on vacation this week so I am getting bike work done while spreading Christmas cheer. I swapped the seat and tank from the 78 as the seat isn't done yet.

As I missed out on a nice set of tank badges on Ebay I decided to do something different. I had a set from a cb750 tank and the bolt centers are the same. I had to straighten them, bent them and paint them, masking does take some time..
