82 KZ750 LTD Brat Style Build **UPDATED**

Re: 82 KZ750 LTD Brat Style Build - First Timer

Anyone else on here have a 4-1, pods and a dynojet kit that can help me with tuning? I have a noticeable loss in power at 3-3500 and no power about 6000.

Right now it's stage 3 (136 mains, 4-1 Mac and Uni Pods.

Re: 82 KZ750 LTD Brat Style Build - First Timer

Ok, so it looks like I figured out my problems. It looks like even though I cleaned and cleaned my carbs (so I thought) I still had 2 plugged ports. I think its the port where gas gets fed into the vacuum slide if that makes sense. Anyway, the moral of the story is clean your carbs, then clean again and maybe a 3rd or 4th time.

Now if I could only figure out why it didn't start this morning... :-\

Re: 82 KZ750 LTD Brat Style Build - First Timer

Alright so riding season is coming to a close and I'm about to begin the real teardown and build up. Plans are as follows:

Complete suspension refresh - I just bought Progressive 412 rear shocks and Progressive fork springs from Amazon for $281 shipped, really good price I thought. Any suggestions on fork oil?
New Tires - Decided on Shinko 712's $128 shipped from Revzilla. I'll give them a shot for that price.
Finish the seat - It's not real comfortable and isn't great looking. Plan is to find some good foam and have the vinyl stitched...any suggestions on foam? I have camping mat in there now.
Finish de-tabing the frame and paint. Probably going to stick with black.
Refinish the wheels - either black or stick with the black polished and just refresh the windows
Something with the gauges and ignition relocation, not sure what... I like M.B Co's suggestion of a single stock gauges, maybe an acewell if money permits?
SS Brake lines, front and rear
New Ballistics Battery or the like.... Any cheaper alternatives that work with a 750?

Can't wait to get started...again! ;D ;D ;D

Re: 82 KZ750 LTD Brat Style Build - First Timer

i like the way it looks. for some reason, the leading axle forks and big arse front wheels really do it for me.

my suggestions, feel free to ignore:

I had a guzzi Eldorado in this week that I had to spend a bit of time riding that had progressive shocks on it. they were absolute crap. spend the money on some decent shocks. ikon are good.

modify the front guard and paint gold like the tank.

paint the polished section of the sides of the wheel spokes gold like the tank.

paint the fork lowers gold like the tank? might require undoing once done.

lower the headlight.

gauge replacement (in the headlight?)

can you fit the rear brake caliper under the swingarm? it's just a huge visual mess on top.

rear brake master cylinder mounted in front of the footrest, to the frame under the crankcases, like a ducati one. just to get rid of that huge pedal.

seat as you intend. makes my arse hurt just looking at it.

lower bars?

some black on the engine for contrast?

18" front wheel instead of 19"?

That's interesting, I read a ton before making a purchase and for a mid level shock everyone said progressive or hagon. I already bought them so I really hope your wrong lol.

If I pull the engine to paint the frame I will be doing some black on the cases, not sure what or how much. Bars are also a sore spot but I love the riding position with these.

Re: 82 KZ750 LTD Brat Style Build - First Timer

suspension is a good example of the "the best you've had is the best you know" thing, and it's very easy to become a suspension snob. but it does make a real difference and is certainly worth spending money on.

if you look at the progressive site you'll see the 430 series has "deflective disc damping", which means shim stack as opposed to the oil flowing through holes tech of the 412 series (same as your forks). it's a technology generation difference.

I'm sure there's better and to use your "the best you've had is the best you know" theory the 412's will be worlds better than the 10-15 year old EMGO's on the bike now. To put things into perspective I paid $540 for the bike, putting a 4-600 set of shocks seems like pearls on a pig right? 8)

Re: 82 KZ750 LTD Brat Style Build - First Timer

depends how happy you are to ride a pig. especially when it doesn't need to be a pig and the difference you will notice every time you ride it, etc. without trying to be preachy, of course.

but, it's a cost justification thing that to you and your aim with and overall concept of your bike seems out of proportion to the perceived benefit and worth. I understand all that. this is the typical "you should fix your suspension" argument. people who ride much more expensive bikes still say the same thing. if you do finally spend way, way more than you think is reasonable on both ends and the way the bike rides is transformed you'll be back here telling everyone they have to do their suspension. it's a born again/reformed smoker kind of thing. sports bike guys who fit light wheels tend to be the worst.

Way to make me feel horrible about spending 280 on new suspension components haha. I get your argument though honestly but budget and price justification does come into every project at some point. I haven't ridden many bikes and have not ridden anything with ohlins, works or even the more expensive hagon and progressive stuff so I really have nothing to compare too. I hope I'll be happy with purchase.

Re: 82 KZ750 LTD Brat Style Build - First Timer

Dude I'm running stock shocks up front, Sportster shocks for the rear and a fiberglass seat with minimal padding. Everyone has their own limits of tolerable or comfortable. I chose tolerable because all of those parts were free or made by me.

To each his own. I'm sure you will be very happy with your purchase.

i'm not good with budgets and motorcycles. I tend to put them into orbit pretty quickly. which was ok when I was single.

as I say to customers, come up with a number, then triple it and add 10% for incidentals. if that doesn't scare you, proceed.

I dig the bike. The hagon rear suspension you bought should serve you well enough. That seat though........ How much pain is your aesthetics ego worth?

Yeah...the trick to those flat seats is that they need to be well made, because all you focus on with the rear half of the bike is the seat.

Ya the seat isn't extremely comfortable, its being redone this winter along with everything else. I may have it professionally done, not sure yet

They are super bike handlebars. I got them on dime city but they don't seem to carry these exact ones anymore. Try these, same thing and z1 is awesome for kz parts. http://www.z1enterprises.com/ItemDetails.aspx?itemDescription=Handlebar+7%2f8%22+Black+Superbike+Bar&item=EM23-12571
