'83 KZ440D Cafe/Brat Build

I like the red/white stripe scheme. Be nice to see it built up a bit more.

Will you have a fork brace? Maybe the front guard mount was the brace as well? Something billet would look trick and serve a purpose :)

Very nice work so far. My first street bike was a kz440.

Are you sure? I did a lot of reading, even contacted the people over at Dime City to make sure these would work. What size would you use and why?

Thanks! Hopefully will have it reassembled, although not running, in the next few weeks. Depends on when I find time to paint the engine and headers.

Not quite sure what I am doing with the front end yet. I like it without the fender but with how much I ride on wet roads it may be a necessity. The old fender did have the brace so I could just cut off the old fender and paint the brace to use.

I don't have any experience in Mikuni carbs, but the OEM Hitachi carbs are 36mm. I saw a KZ440 for sale on ebay a little while ago where the owner had installed Mikuni BS38's from the Kawasaki KZ750B twin (also used on some Yamaha XS650s) and KZ1000 intake manifolds/pod air filters and H-D Sportster mufflers. He said this is how it should have come from the factory and ran super.

Knew you would say you talked to dcc. carbs are too big

DOHC did you not do your homework this time? You just bash the guy not realizing the stock carbs on this are 36mm. OH and the earlier models were infact 32mm. Could you explain why your conclusion is that they are too big? Sorry today I'm just miffed because I didn't sleep well. But I rarely see a positive comment from you on a new guy's build and that doesn't help people out. You just simply state that's too big, and no reasoning on why. Please enlighten us as I'm always up for learning....

Zap, carry on. I don't think you will have as much trouble as he made it sound. With the proper jetting you can get almost any carburetor that is near the stock size to work, although it's at what ability they work that is the key. Sure those BS38's might have run great...but for all we know, he built the bike, drove it 20 miles and called it good. If you have 1000 miles on a bike with modified carbs, you can then call it "good" in my opinion. Most bikes are built, and the builder moves on without truly testing it, so keep that in mind when you read posts and see what others have done.

It's probably been thought of but here's my idea for shock shrouds or starter motor cover...for a laugh at least.

I don't have to do homework. 99% of my posts come straight out of my head. Kiss my Fuckin ass if you think otherwise and fuck you for implying that I need Google to post, amateur. Get some experience before you question me while insulting.

NOW you're "miffed".

CV carbs are always bigger for any given application. If you need to do homework to know that great but I don't.

32mm VMs are too big. They're too big because they're too big. That's not bashing or negativity its a fact proven by experience. If you have an ache in your groin because you didnt want to hear facts then get the fuck off the internet.

There's no such thing as a "cafe/brat". Another fact.

Haha, yes this is exactly the response I was expecting. I'm ok with being wrong, I admit I didn't understand something that you did. My point was more that you start of just insulting people and telling them they don't know what they are doing yet you offer no help or information regarding their decision. The Original poster Trolltoll and I now know that 32mm doesn't mean 32mm when talking about carburetors, I've never needed to know that since I don't swap carbs on bikes. Thank you for your kind understanding and knowledge. With that said. Chill out man. I'm young and here to help people not berate and belittle. Your wisdom comes off as narcissistic, not as being smart. Let's help the guy the best way possible. Yes, there is such thing as cafe/brat simply due to using styling cues from each of them. Again, relax and take that xanax my friend :) No feelings need to be hurt here. Again, I apologize for being wrong and insulting your intelligence. Back to the OP and helping him.

Edit: It's quite interesting to find information on the CV sizing versus other carbs. Thanks for the heads up Dohc. It's opened a whole new section of learning for me. Never needed to know it, but always good to learn something new. I've got a lot of reading to do.

I'm 36. I highly doubt an internet conversation is going to change the way I communicate. Yes I am a narcissist. One of the few that will admit it.

I provide answers. I am not obligated to explain.

Understood. And OK. We obviously do things differently and that's ok. I want to know as much as I can so I don't make a mistake in the future. Like when I posted purely based upon a carburetor's size in MM. Now I know that was a mistake and won't do it again. It's not that you are obligated to explain, it's more of actually helping someone out. It doesn't help to say you did it wrong, it helps to say you did it wrong you moron, here's why.... 8) ;) ;D. Otherwise how does one know what they are doing wrong? Either way, thanks for explaining it regardless of how it came out. I did re-read my post and due to the lack of sleep it came out far nastier than it should have. Carry on sir.

Troll, what's next on the list?

Hahaha hadn't made that connection. But I will be picking up six pack this weekend so I can give it a shot just to see what it looks like. Probably won't keep it but I can't help but try it.

Got my 2-into-1 headers today. Some of (maybe all?) the 440Bs came stock with them so I found one for cheap on Ebay. Looks to be in pretty good shape but definitely will need to be cleaned up. Thinking about trying electrolysis to remove the surface rust. Anyone else done this? How did it turn out? Before that I have to cut off the stock muffler so I can use a shorty slip-on. After the headers, engine, and muffler will all get painted black with high temp paint.

Also looking into reg/recs right now. Since I am upgrading to a LiFePO4 battery I want to get a new one so I don't catch it on fire. I've heard good things about Rick's Motorsports but as always I appreciate any suggestions.

How do you even get a mule deer in a bathing suit?

Thanks man. It has been a lot of fun so far. Glad I can share it with everyone.

That rust at the "Y" isn't going to clean up. If ya can make a little room in the budget have them blasted and coated. Lasts damn near forever.
