A few words.

We've banned people?!?! Do tell!!

Word on the street is that Loco Leon sold all his bikes and bought a $45,000 Harley. So who is the other one?

"I knew that it would blow this site up and bring forth a bunch of people who I felt weren't "worthy". Now that's completely fucked up to think in that exclusionary way and I'm sure there are going to be some amazing people and builds as a result of this popularity but that's my immediate emotionally immature reaction."

I get that way too..its totally wrong, but I do.

I don't think its totally wrong at all! I am one of those new guys that got hooked by the TV show. When something becomes very popular and mainstream, it kinda gets watered down. That makes it less special. Plus, the community gets larger, and I thinks that makes the bonds people form over their hobby weaker and also not as special. Then you need to factor in the buisness side of a hobby being made popular. More mainstream customers equals more mainstream buisnesses getting involved. The personal touch one might have gotten buying parts might soon be replaced by a very automated ordering system. Think "big-box store".

For me, realized that in cafe bikes, there was something I was looking for. I always wanted a motorcycle. I love ol' skool stuff, but couldn't afford to do the classic Harley or Triumph bob chop thing. I also knew I wanted something sporty and fast looking, but I can't afford a new CBR or GXSR, and really, that kinda bike is not really my style. But then I saw Cafe Racer on TV, and fell in love! I saw an ol' skool, sporty style bike! And I can afford it! Well, not all at once, but over the next couple months I can. lol

The type of people that seem involved in this community are just an added bonus!

EDIT TO ADD:
I gotta admit, I have been guilty about asking for stuff on a silver platter. But some things actually worry me do to my total noob lack of knowledge. For instance, I have absolutely NO CLUE about motorcycles. :D So things like rear-sets boggle my mind.

I am relatively new here as well. I view this forum a little differently than most, as I am virtually on the motorcycle moon here in Montana. I use this forum to keep a link with all of you who can get together and forge the kind of in person relationships founded in our bikes that we all would like to enjoy. That said, I was able to actually meet in person another enthusiast in my area, through this site! That kind of thing is invaluable to me. Then, too, I have been able to have bike related dealings on a more personal level with many of you, and that furthers the horizon to which I am really able to reach.
I think the true active members define themselves for sure. The rest tend to muddy it for them, but it allows for a little fresh blood as well. I would agree with what has previously been said, that the true enthusiasts will stand out on their own merits. I also embrace the idea of growth. There is something to be said for the combined resources and ideas of such a large population.
But, I think that kind of growth should be managed into some form of organized, even localized format. I am surprised that there has not been more push for regional chapters (save a few very active ones). I think that some kind of child board for more regions, to allow for improved social networking would greatly help the "brotherhood" feel. Sure, we still want to get together when we can, but rather than try to cram everyone into one space, I think that we could channel some more of that into regional rooms, and further promote actual interaction, rides, events, and the like.
I will close with this. You guys have all been very supportive of me and my projects/ ramblings. Even of my self supporting, vainglorious attention whoring ways. I feel proud to be a part of this group!

I will start off by saying this is a great thread with some very intelligent conversation. I am much better at understand than writing but will add what some insight to the best of my ability. What is happening is nothing that hasn't happened throughout history in developing society's. A few people has blossomed into a group large enough that the melting pot is boiling over. DTT has went form acephalous society to an entity that now craves a class structure that has yet to form. Utopia would be great but has yet to happen. I thank Kiley for starting this thread in a very well written statement of truth. I'm not sure he knew the power of his own words. Things have a way of working out and I'm curious to see what the future holds for this forum. Remember this forum is what YOU the members make it.

Funny thing is that you two guys, though new, I actually recognize your usernames as guys that participate in a positive manner and I think that that is what we are really talking about here.

man i hope that new members are not afraid to ask questions! hell i have explained things over and over and have no problem doing it again, that is one of the reasons we startred the 50 mod thread and the paint threads. shit sometimes going over how tos with new people makes me think of new ways to do things, i always recomend this site to my friends and customers, there are a bunch of them that are Lurking in the wings. Danny (if he ever chimes in on here) gets ideas off the site all the time then comes in wiht his CB 750 and i show him how to do it, soon i will not have his busn anymore cause he will spin all his own wrenches but i have made a great friend and we ride alot, same with Dave on here... nothing wrong with that... but the day people stop asking questions and sharing knowledge on this site is the day we should become a blog and not a forum. hell i hae only met 4or5 members in person and consider well over that to be my friends, hell i got 5 christmas cards this year alone from members i never even met in person. to me that is cool as hell!

I've made friends here that I've never met face to face. But I consider them friends. I like the positiveness (if thats a word) of here. I like the lack of mydickisbiggerthanyoursness (another word that won't make it at scrabble). I hope it continues and can't see any reason why it won't.

positiveness, mydickisbiggerthanyoursness are words because you just created them. I just sent an email to Webster telling them to add these words to the big book, you may now kick some ass at scrabble.

making up your own words...... yeah, when your part of the dtt family, your that cool ;D

guys, i agree with all of this, i think this thread has been a good reminder for us to keep it real with everyone, and always stay tight with one another.

you know, i think were gonna be alright guys.
i mean, just read back through all of the posts, if thats not what you call sincere, caring, and true, then idk what is, because we just showed the awesomeness we can achieve together, building friendships and bikes even if separated by miles and miles of land.

Joe, I hope I didn't come across as bothered by questions. I know when I started here you and others answered a lot of questions for me that I now know you had done thousands of times before. I now try to answer the ones I can for people so guys with more experience and knowledge that can answer more complicated questions don't have to. But you can tell when someone is genuinely interested in a discourse and in learning and when someone just wants it done for them. I think that is what J and a I are referring to.

To the newish guys actually posting in this thread contributing and speaking up actually gets me pumped and gets me excited for the future chats/gtgs/rides.

You dudes are doing it right!

The few that are "here today, gone tomorrow" and seemingly only out for them selves are the ones putting a Burr under my saddle.

I think to get respect, you have to give it, and contribute (even if its just a cool intro, with picture and a story) before asking for handouts..

again, to the newer guys participating in this thread, props to you and welcome!!

That's the s

That's the stuff right there. Well said Sean, that's exactly what I'm getting at!

It made me happy to read a thread one day where a bunch of members were going back and forth to resolve ones carb issues (I believe that's what it was). I didn't recognize any of the names and then realized all of them had less then 20 posts each. They dove in and got to work contributing. I just thought that was great.

I've been looking at this site for a couple of months now. Dock (Mike, Von Yinzer, etc.) turned me on to it before he hooked me up with a really sweet CB350f (from Justin, I believe). I am very busy (3 kids and an old, piece of shit house and two old, piece of shit cars that constantly need worked on), and therefore will move very slow on my rebuild. So I am not what might be considered a hard-core DTT'er.

However, Dock and I have been friends for a long time. And I always felt we shared a similar sensibility. It is on this site that I have found the same kind of ethos, the same kind of community spirit. Granted, I probably am the most untutored motorcycle mind that has ever laid eyes on this site, but I will continue to watch, listen and get help from those that are willing to give it. In the many threads and discussions I have read, DTT members have been nothing but generous, empathetic and cordial in all of their suggestions and conversations. Maybe I have not read enough, but I have not found any manner of mean-spiritedness that some have attested to.

I have read this thread for the last couple of days with fascination. Though I have not been much of a contributor, I can appreciate the genuine debate that has permeated each post.

Hope to get working on my ride and have a thread one day soon. Thanks.

Well said gents, well said

I'm very guilty of being Mia for awhile now and I apologize. Mostly due to the reasons stated but also due to a wintery mix of the blues and life getting in the way. I really do miss the dtt community. I have to say though that after reading the post in this thread I have a renewed sense of hope. Thank you Swagger, Kiley and everyone else for bringing this to light and also for the fantastic conversation. For me a plastic society is what I'm running from in the real world I really didn't need to come here and face one too. Thanks for allowing me to add my .02 worth. I realize its really not worth much...

Well Troy, To me I have been missing your posts and figured you were plowing again! And I always appreciate your $.02 whenever you give it. Along with everyone in this thread. I have also been quite busy and I am mostly reading and posting from work wich happens to be slow enough right now to do it. MIss you bud and can't wait to see you and the family again soon. I was just discussing your lap dog the other day with some other dog owners :)

I have to admit, I'm a lurker on here....haven't contributed anything bike related. I found this site by accident and have always love the cafe "look" to bikes. I thought I had a direction in mind when I purchased my bike but that has constantly changed after viewing all the builds on this site (thanks  ). I have ton's of respect for those that build their stuff with their own hands and all the knowledge on here.
At first I was hesistant about voting at all for BOTM, it actually stressed me out somewhat...for 1 being new, 2 not knowing much, 3 not knowing the person. I made it a point to review the build threads inside and out, and look at the members and their recent posts then vote. I actually hoped others where doing the same thing..I disregarded a lot of bikes that I didn't think were what this site was all about.

I haven't started a build thread yet, with 2 young boys, the economy sucking and ups and downs at work extra cash is at premium...that and I didn't want to be labeled as a "poser", for being new, or getting blasted for not knowing what a true cafe bike was. Some of those posts make my brain spin..

I can understand the plastic feeling some of you have, but be patient not all of us are artists or engineers...and are learning constantly as we go.

thanks for all your help, inspiration, and knowledge ya'll offer, some us truely appreciate it and hope to put it to good use.

This is a perfect example in my eyes of someone new to the hobby and fairly new to the site that has a great attitude. And will more than likely have a great experience on DTT because of it.

In my 1st post I was by no means trying to be a Jerk. But, I do get a little irritated when someone is not willing to do any foot work. Such as seek out basic parts. I can understand if somebody is looking for something as rare as hens teeth. But that is rarely the case. And there is a SEARCH function on the bored that I think could use a good dusting. No one seems to use it. So we Continually re-hash simple subjects for new peeps... There is a wealth of knowledge on this board that some one has already graciously taken the time to post. Its kinda taken for granted.
