Airhead Cafe Racer - 81 BMW R65 - Few New Pics

Re: Airhead Cafe Racer - 81 BMW R65 - Halloween Time!

So. The ongoing saga that is my paint continues. This is mostly me venting, but feel free to read up.

If you'll remember, they had my tank back in January.. they promised it would be finished by the end of the month. I ended up getting it back sometime around mid May. The orange didn't match the frame (as it was supposed to). I called the guy and he was like, yeah we can redo that. I weighed my options. Ride with the tank not perfect... or send it to them and not ride for another 5 months. Well.. it didn't take long before the paint started bubbling. I called the guy back and he was like, "Yeah, well we were going to redo it anyway, right? Cause the paint didn't match?" I told him, yeah. So I drop the tank off and the new painter (they fired the one that messed it up the first time) looked at the work in disgust. He couldn't believe the other guy did this. He assured me it will be done right, and will look amazing. Knowing the whole story of before, he told me, "We should be done within a week, but I'm going to say two because I don't want to lie to you like the other guy did." I thought, two weeks is perfect, I'll have time to clean up the bike and mark it done. Then I'll haul it down to Barber and we'll have a grand old time.

Every time I've talked to them, they've told me, "Oh we found another hole... I have to go pick it up from the radiator shop here in a bit". Last week the guy told me it was primed and ready to go, and that they'd be shooting this week. I said, "Man you're cutting it close...I leave Thursday!" His response... "I'm trying to get it out for you.." Monday came around and I asked about it, he said it was at the radiator shop!!! I said, "I thought you said it was already primed.." - "No man.. I said it was at the radiator shop..." At this point I unloaded on the guy. He told me, "I'm going to go pick it up right now, and my painter will be coming in early tomorrow and we'll get it done."

Today, I sent the shop manager a text message asking what's the story... No response. I waited an hour. Tried to call him. No answer. I called the shop. No answer. I got in my car and drove 22 miles to their shop. He was sanding a door. Shop phone clipped on his pants.. Mobile phone in arms reach... He looked up and saw me and said, "Hey man, how's it going..." I told him I came by to see progress on the tank. His response... "Oh yeah I probably need to go get that here in a minute..." I lost my shit. I was like "PROBABLY?!!? I LEAVE TOMORROW ASSHOLE!" I then brought up the fact that I just drove across town to ask about something after messaging and calling with no response. He was like.. uhh yeah.. i was at lunch... I told him I messaged him nearly two hours ago... and asked if he really wanted to stand there and lie about it. He explained that it's the radiator shops fault. That they had to take it back because it still had a hole. I asked him why they are just now finding this out, since they've had the thing for a month. They knew there was a hole.

He stood there and told me that he's doing everything he can. I got very close to him. And said a lot of mean things in his face. His painter walked by and I was like, "Yo... dude... what's the deal... how long will it take you... if you have the tank in your hands right now..." - "Uhh.. probably Tuesday...." I told him I really appreciated him dicking me and asked for the radiator shop's number.

Suddenly the guy was like.. uhh.. I was about to go over there... I told him no.. I'm going to talk to them....

So I finally found the number. Had to talk to 3 people before I had someone that could understand / speak english... They explained that it was ready to be picked up... I asked how long they'd had it... total.... "Three days..?" So what have they been doing for the last 4 weeks? They boned me once... offered to fix it for free and boned me again.... Thanks a lot.

Re: Airhead Cafe Racer - 81 BMW R65 - Halloween Time!

dude you can do a wicked paint job cheap and easy... get your stuff and you can do it... least get you to barber with soem paint on that sucker, and do it in rattle can so it is easy to blast off if you want to get a real paint job on that sucker
i love doing orange and black combo's

here are 2 that i have done...both are shot with rattle can. super easy to get this look and paint... here is how you do it...
hit up the hardware store pick up some rustoleum painters touch paint... you will need semi gloss black and matt clear... it is a rattle can and like 4 bucks a can... your also goign ot watn to get the primer... so what you do... if the parts are already stripped take 400 grit and give it all a good scuff. wash it all with dish soap and water. dry it off, then wipe down with denatured alch, from there i like to then wipe down again with PREP, but it is not needed 100%... grab a tack cloth and wipe it all down...
have your cans of paint sitting in hot hot water, this will help it to flow out and lay smooth

lay your primer... (now this is guessing you have no body work to do) give it 2 or 3 good coats... let that cure for 24 hours... now take that 400 block and block it all out to get it nice and smooth... blow it all off, wipe down with denatured again, tack cloth
and now you start to hit it with color!
LIGHT COATS... LIGHT COATS!!!!
light coats 5 - 7 min in between them... hit it all with the semi gloss black... now remeber you have 1 hour to get this whole thing done then you have to wait 3 days if you need to recaot... and wait it is no joke it will crack and peel if you do not... what i do is color and clear in one round. i shoot the clear on wet base... works awesome and so smooth. give it 3 or 4 good coats of the black base... now you should be close to the 30 min mark... pull your clear out of the hot water... shake her up and lay the clear over the top... light coats man. i am not playing light and no runs, thick it runs... with the clear if it starts to get clowdy stop, let it cure up a bit and then add more clear... lay your clear coats on there. up till your hour mark... then let it cure for 24 hours... boom great looking paint job on the cheap! i would give it a good 48 - 72 hours before you put her in action but that is all you need to do... would get you to barber and look great at the same time. just be careful when adding gass... i had a buddy borrow my fighter and spill gas all over it... i took a water bottle and poured water all over it within 2 min and it was perfectly fine.. held up well...

as i said i dig orange and black here are the 2 last projects i did using the above paint method and orange powder work

i did my race sled all in black and orange even tore out the skid and did the whole suspension

Good luck matty, I hope it all comes together despite the ration of crap you've been dealing with :)

Re: Airhead Cafe Racer - 81 BMW R65 - Halloween Time!

I'm not sure how late Kit and Matt were up there but I left around 11. Here's a couple of pics.

EDIT: Also, how great is this forum? "Oh, you need everything painted the night before you leave because some painter screwed you over? Cool, see you in an hour."

Re: Airhead Cafe Racer - 81 BMW R65 - Halloween Time!

She's got color... a lot of color... a lot more color then any of us expected.

I can't wait to see her back together and in the sunlight and see her explode in bassboat brilliance! I also can't wait to sleep again, I can't do these all nighters like I could just a couple of years ago.

Re: Airhead Cafe Racer - 81 BMW R65 - Halloween Time!

Right on gents, love the stubby beers! I miss those bottles. Can't wait to see the bike in person. I bet you will be more proud you did it yourself than paying some asshole to do it for you.

Bassboat brilliance! Hah! I heard about the clear coat...can't wait to see it.

Re: Airhead Cafe Racer - 81 BMW R65 - Halloween Time!

Yeah we were there until around 2am I believe?

As far as the color... Let's just say it won't fail to attract attention. We used some of the super expensive candy I bought to redo the orange scallop (had it matched to the frame). It has a certain.... "character".... to it that we weren't expecting at all. Kit walked out of the paint booth eyes wide.

It was a bit shocking at first, but by the end of the night it really grew on me.

Re: Airhead Cafe Racer - 81 BMW R65 - Halloween Time!

Our bikes at Barber.

Some people have asked about this photo. I shot it with my Canon T2i. 24 second exposure. Then I used the LED flashlight app on my iPhone and I slowly panned the light across the bikes to up their exposure. It was just something I was experimenting with. Came out pretty well I'd say. I've uploaded a few more pics of some of the sidecar races and whatnot in the Barber thread. Check those out. You'll want a sidecar. And a lady to monkey for you.
