broke ass slo bike build CM400t

Re: broke ass slo bike build

wow, wall of text lol

anyways, Mr. Swagger thanks for taking the time to share your ideas

for anyone wondering, it's on the road and running pretty smoothly only real mechanical issue is that it could probably use a bit of a tune up. on friday i was riding it home from work and all the sudden it began running very poorly. i couldn't figure out what had happened, but i got home.

saturday i went back out to investigate in some shorts bcuz it was hot and i didnt plan on riding. it was hard to start, and i got a backfire...but what was interesting was that i felt a puff of air on my right lower leg. i looked down and found this (bolt dead center of pic)
4832_660763452805_22401740_40128232_130474_n.jpg

somehow this bolt had backed itself out at some point and created a gap that was probably sucking air, or expelling it before combustion. im not sure which. but easy fix and back to running better. i haven't pulled the plugs to check whether this made it run rich or lean. they'll probably need to be cleaned.

moving on to the new sportbike take-offs. i was hoping the lights would be much smaller than my current set (maybe just remove all the extra plastic on it and tuck the lights up under the seat.

the seat idea that i expressed poorly in the photochop will hopefully look like a longer version of the Roarer seat, so to fit 2 (perhaps uncomfortably)

i'm not quite equipped to start frame chopping, but we may get there some day. i plan to do exactly what you suggest with a rear hugger fender.

also, wondering what peoples opinions are on the darker blue that stock on my tank? the flat black is only temporary on this evo 0.5 to draw less attention to the parts i plan to change. the blue would stay on the tank, repeat on front and rear fender, possibly some accents. brown seat possibly.

oh yeah, cribbed a bar-end mirror from the wife's old bicycle for work on friday

Re: broke ass slo bike build

not much done, it's been raining

this is a little bit more of what i was thinking
flat seat with aluminum folded down to cover the funky frame bends (maybe holes or script drilled in?) it would be nice if i could make the aluminum topline of the seat, match the line of the tank

this is how much space it would give me to mount the battery and fuse panel.

Re: broke ass slo bike build

I thought of the same thing on my CM but never mocked it up. If you can paint it to have it dissappear and use a thin, but High density foam to keep the overall hight down it might look ok?? Put pods on the carbs and remove the side covers to have the open look under neath the seat and it could look ok? Hard to say. I am still trying to figure out what to do n mine, the worst part of the bike is the swept frame. I actually want my seat higher to give me move room between seat and pegs. Your Idea could work, especially if you tuck the battery and electrics under there and open up behind the carbs..... you got me thinking I might just have to take a crack at my seat this weekend.... I got to get a new battery anyway because it is dead every morning, a sealed one on it's side under the seat like that, with a brat style round back and stiched apolstery and it just might be cool..... Keep up the good work, I know about the budget thing, it sucks to have 0 cash, but it makes you have to come up with cool ideas that cost little to nothing. Check this out, might work, now I want to leave work early and take a crack at it.

Re: broke ass slo bike build

yeah maritime, i like the idea pic. this will definitely raise the seat height. the thing i'm not sure about after throwing carboard on there is that the frame widens a few inches before the seat. this makes the shape have to be a little more complex than i was thinking. instead of just bending the sign, i may have to cut it to the shape i want on top, then cut the sides and bend them around.

even though this adds visual heft to the frame, i think pods and clearing the electronics will more than make up for it

Re: broke ass slo bike build

I alread have the pods, just never see them because I still have the side covers to hide the battery and electrics. I was waiting to do a bump seat to hide them but I have to afford another bike to take my wife out on first , this way I might be able to hide that stuff, ditch the side covers and still have 2 up seating. All depends onthe cost of the battery and if I can score some aluminum plate. I work for the city so I might be able to score a scrapped street sign. I know what you mean about the way the frame widens. you just might need to do a relief cut for the bends. Good luck, and post pics if you get it going. If I get the chance to work it out I will post up some pics.

Re: broke ass slo bike build

maritime, i know you're already aware of this thread http://dotheton.com/index.php?topic=5667.msg62871#msg62871 but i just came across it and it makes me pretty excited about the idea of getting everything moved up into that space and covered by sheeting to blend in. and when i don't need 2-up, i can get a cafe seat that swaps with this 2-up brat idea. i think this could work and look very slick

Re: broke ass slo bike build

yeah, roccity's seat looks good on our bikes. When I don't need 2 up I will likely buy one as well.

Cheers,

Maritime

Re: broke ass slo bike build-New House/Workspace more planning

so i haven't done anything huge. i moved to a new house, got a new puppy and general life stuff going on. oh and i updated my username to match other sites

anyways i continued templating in cardboard for the seat, started cutting the stopsign to shape, and scratched up some free foam for the seat, that i've roughly shaped.

so...
here's what i might do to create an electronics compartment between the seat and the frame. very rough indeed

this would be the new side profile sans seat pad
9420_686172028815_22401740_41294052_7773576_n.jpg

so i bought a 2.99 hacksaw at the grocery store (told you this was a broke ass build)

it's not getting the job done very well, so i ran out and bought an arbor adaptor and 1/16 cutoff wheel. my drill is charging overnight, and it's probably gonna be dangerous

if its nice friday i'm riding over to a friend's to put my new chain on, i don't have a picture but my chain is in bad shape

Re: broke ass slo bike build CM400t seat progress

I can't believe I didn't find this thread earlier. I'm in a very similar situation - same bike, same garage situation, similar budget, same dilemma about seats. in fact, I got all my gear together today for finally doing a seat build tomorrow.

I'll be trying something slightly different, but I'm curious how yours will work out, I like the idea of being able to hide battery/electronics up there, but I'm goint to try and hide the frame a little more with the seat itself.

Did you see the GS1000 built by Oz Customs? Similar approach to what you're talking about - welded a sort of skirt around the seat dip in the fram with a platform on top for a glass seat. You could easily swap out different styles of seats on that, if you had the coin for multiple seats.

i wish

hahaha
well hopefully things will start picking up a little bit. i'm making local motorcycle friends with garages, chainbreakers and sewing machines so that should help

i'm from the school of do-it-yourself , wash, repeat
it takes awhile but eventually i'll get it right

no pictures here, but my new friend helped me
-put on a new chain: brilliant, it's an 0-ring chain, heavy-duty and from ebay. there's so much less slop in the drivetrain
-adjust the idle: it hadn't bothered me much before, but now it idles so smooth and doesn't backfire or stall at all (i thought the carbs needed a serious cleaning)
-finally, we rerouted the throttle cables and lubricated them so i don't have automatic cruise control

it's like its a whole new bike

we even had time to go for a ride. he has a very, very nicely restored 78 cb 750 k

*oh, i also finally tracked down the rear running light issue. it's a dual filament and i'm retarded for not having figured it out earlier. new bulb (which happens to be the same as the turn signals-yay HONDA-so i had one laying around) and we are in business

Re: broke ass slo bike build CM400t new crappy pics

i put new rear turn signals on, from the ebay auction
i fixed the front right turn signal
made a bracket from metal stock at Menard's for tailight and license plate, and removed the old big chunk of iron and sprayed fender real quick
i have better pictures on teh camera at home

paint still wet

Re: broke ass slo bike build CM400t new crappy pics

Wow, I like it. I really like the light moved over, just that simple change cleans up the rear and makes that seat look less chunky. Can't wait to see the day pictures. Where did you get your chain? I need to do the same thing too, soon.
Keep it up.

Thanks Ghosttown, it's good to hear some feedback. i might be painting my tank and x-pipe collector thing after work, but i'll try to get some pictures up.

chain is from:
ebay seller race-driven. i'm really happy with it so far. i might buy new sprockets from there too
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1979-1981-HONDA-CM400-CM-400-O-RING-CHAIN_W0QQitemZ250295923750QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotorcycles_Parts_Accessories?hash=item3a46ccb426&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245

i bought this paint to do the pipes
SPHhuCopSpL.jpg
but i shot some on a spare headlight trim ring and i don't think it would look good on the pipes, but will be nice for the tank and collector. i'm having trouble coming up with a color to complement it though, as i don't want the tank to be a single color.
i will probably buy cheapo white exhaust wrap and let it brown out nicely, so maybe a dirty white or ivory stripe on the tank would look good?

any comments

Re: broke ass slo bike build CM400t new crappy pics

ok so i ended up painting the tank and i like it. the biggest thing to do in the short term is recover the seat. then evolution one is done.

who am i kidding? are these things ever done? hahaha ok, well i took some night pictures cuz thats the only time i have right now. i'm looking forward to the weekend to relax a bit

here's something to look at:

Re: broke ass slo bike build CM400t **tank painted 9-17!!!

I wasn't so sure when you mentioned painting it, but i like it...a lot. I agree it does give it more of a vintage feel. Are you still thinking of going with a stripe? It's coming along nicely. I mentioned getting a chain yesterday, and damn sure enough right on my way home it popped off. Luckily I wasn't too far from work. I got it put back on and tried to adjust it again as far as it will go, but it's past time for a new one. Thanks!

Re: broke ass slo bike build CM400t **tank painted 9-17!!!

Looks great! I like the color and the clubmans look good on this bike.
