Bucky's '74 CB360 Hardtail Bobber Build~"Root Beer float"

Re: Bucky's '74 CB360 Hardtail Bobber Build

Got my paper work yesterday from the DOT to give to my bond agent for my bonded title, then a DOT agent needs to come and verify the vin#. Getting closer. I feel better about the $900 I have spent so far on this free motorcycle.

Re: Bucky's '74 CB360 Hardtail Bobber Build

I really love it when the DOT, works in my favor! Just got a call from the Iowa DOT and after reviewing my case/pictures. They do not need to do a inspection on the bike and I can go register the bike.... That just made my day!

Re: Bucky's '74 CB360 Hardtail Bobber Build

That is always a good kind of phone call to get. Congrats.

Re: Bucky's '74 CB360 Hardtail Bobber Build

The CB is officially Titled and registered in my name! Now i just got to get it on the road!

Re: Bucky's '74 CB360 Hardtail Bobber Build

I did a little bit of design work.

Preliminary design for my chain spring tensioner.

The pivot has bronze bushings with bronze washers between the mounts and the pivot.
The idler sprocket 15 Tooth with ball bearings.
1/4" steel for laser cut pieces.
The torsion spring is 27 in/lbs. x .125" thick.
3/8" shoulder bolt for the pivot bot
5/8" shoulder bolt for the idler sprocket.
Overall width 2"

Does anyone have any input on the torsion spring size? Is the stiffer the spring the better?

Maybe I am discombobulated here. But to me it looks like the chain will hit something. Or am I just looking at this all turned around?

Re: Bucky's '74 CB360 Hardtail Bobber Build

The arm when tension is put on it will rotate the other way. The tensioner will be on the bottom side of the chain.

Re: Bucky's '74 CB360 Hardtail Bobber Build

Basically th chain will be on top and the tensioner will be pushing up.

You will need to reverse the spring then. Your mock up shows the arm spring loaded down, not up.....

My thought is that I would actually rotate the arm up 180 when installed. To pre load the spring. That way there is always tension on the chain.
The position shown is with no tension on the spring it would be rotated clockwise to be per loaded. Unless I'm not using the spring the right way.

If you rotated the drawing 180 degrees, then the spring tension would rotate the sprocket arm up.

Ooo So your going to pull the arm around clockwise from its present 9 oclock position to the 3 oclock position. Then the chain will lay on top of it? Gotcha.
should be great. Next time do a pretty picture w the chain installed. It would be less of a puzzle for me.

Does this pretty picture, better explain it 8)

Re: Bucky's '74 CB360 Hardtail Bobber Build

I am borrowing a compression tester from a co-worker tonight. I am hoping it has good compression, so I don't need to tear into the motor! Fingers crossed!

Re: Bucky's '74 CB360 Hardtail Bobber Build

Left cylinder compression :180psi
Right cylinder compression: 165/170psi

Thoughts?!?! Manual says 170 psi

Re: Bucky's '74 CB360 Hardtail Bobber Build

That seems fine. Valves could be a touch out of adjustment, giving different psi.
