Cafe' CB200 - Silver Bullet - Up And Running... Now For Mods

Re: ~ Cafe' CB200 Begins - Silver Bullet - Engine Rebuild ~

Ok finally an update... and one with Photos!

School term is slowing down a bit... so I spent sometime last night and tonight, finishing the painting of the motor and reassembling the side covers. Not much I know, but I'm at the point of no return now, its time to install the pistons next!

So...

Not a perfect paint job, but def does the trick. I may paint the head's fins black as well and then shave the edges silver just on the head, not sure yet. Opinions and comments please!

(It's hitting a record low for this time of year here in Jacksonville, FL.... 29F degrees tonight!)

Looks great so far, I vote for black fins & polishing the edges gives it a nice detailed look. I've been waiting for an update as I've been working on & riding a buddy's cb200 for the last few months & been having a blast, they are so light. not a powerhouse by any means but they move along pretty well.

Ok guys, sorry I havn't posted in a bit. School started back up for me last week and I'm still adjusting to things.

I ended up getting the lower part of the case off and pulled all the shafts out (keeping all the gears on so to not mess with the clips etc on the shafts). Searched high and low for the other half of the gear and couldn't find it anywhere. Looked for it on the shafts thinking it may still be jammed up. ALL of my gears on both shafts and the kick shaft are there. There isn't a single gear missing or broken in that entire bike, so where that piece came from I don't know.

Anyways. So I got the head and block off the the local shop and got it back a few days ago. Im going to order some new pistons, rings and pins here in the next few days and while I wait on them to come from teh UK I will be repainting the entire motor.

I already attempted to paint one of the sidecovers and it didn't come out so hot. I used a wire wheel to clean a lot of the old garbage off the motor and covers. In doing so I left some really coarse lines in a lot of the metal so I am having to go back over the motor with fine sand paper. Painting before using the fine sand paper I could still see a lot of the coarse scratches through the paint. To help with this I picked up some high temp engine primer to throw on there before the actual silver.

As you can tell it's slowly coming along... now it's just reassembly and waiting on parts.

Any tips on the engine paint job would be AWESOME!

Hey another 200 coming together!! Looking really nice bro! One question, where did you order all of your engine parts?? I think I am going to have to do the same thing here in the near future and I cant find parts anywhere.

Re: ~ Cafe' CB200 Begins - Silver Bullet - Engine Rebuild ~

on thos side cases they are alum so they are pretty soft... to get those grooves out... get a fine wire wheel and hit it with that... then use some steel wool #00 and #000 to get them out... you may even have to just resort to sand paper... they will come out... what did you end up doing for the paint on the motor... i am shooting mine this week, was just going to wire wheel it, simple green the deal all over to remove anyting left... wash it again in dish soap... then prep it with "prep spray" , tack cloth it, prime, then paint... i am using 500* heat paint, not sure how i feel about that i would rather 1200* but that does not come in gloss black around by me... so we will see how it holds up

I ended up having to hand sand the covers as best I could. Then to prep I used some acetone and a lent free cloth, then some prep paint fluid (removes any extra oil and debri) then I sprayed it with 500* heat paint (DupliColor). HUGE importance though... use the 500* primer FIRST! Even more important, get a pot of water and heat it up on the stove, then place the can you are about to spray with in the pot of water until the can becomes warm to the touch (almost to warm to hold onto)... THEN spray your item! It makes the spray finer and helps it dry more evenly. What a difference!!! Then on everything but the upper case (too big) I baked the pieces in the oven for about 10-15 minutes at around 150*F-200*F. HOME-EC 101 ;D

As far as the actual parts go... I bought my piston/ring/pin sets off ebay.uk, all sizes were $90 shipped for two (If I remember right). Then for all my seals and gaskets and mainly just google searched for the best deals. Some came off ebay as well.

This weekend if time permits, I'm going to give the pistons a whirl. Any tips or hints from those more experienced would be AWESOME!

Ok, more work done tonight...

Here we go...
It's a miracle, I did it all by myself, haha! Them jugs are in there.

And then the head... still have to adjust the valves and make sure the timing is dead on etc etc. But def a lot closer.

Still prob going to paint the head black too with some silver edges.

Re: Cafe' CB200 Begins - Silver Bullet - Engine Rebuild

Thanks! I just hope it will run as good as it looks.

I have zero experience with adjusting valves but I'm gonna pick up the tool from a local today on my lunch. I know the key is just checking and double checking the clearence and then checking again. Maybe I'll have the motor ready to go back in by the end of the weekend.

Like I said any wisdom and guidance is more than welcome!!!

Re: Cafe' CB200 Begins - Silver Bullet - Engine Rebuild

setting the valves is a cake walk if you have the manual and some patience

Re: Cafe' CB200 Begins - Silver Bullet - Engine Rebuild

do me a solid... take some pics why you do this... i need to do it on my honda 350 later, would help to have some pics, i have never done it either

Re: Cafe' CB200 Begins - Silver Bullet - Engine Rebuild

Haha, I'll try my best... those are cell phone pictures so I'll try. Not sure if you want to use the inexperienced to refer too.

But if it helps others...

Re: Cafe' CB200 Begins - Silver Bullet - Engine Rebuild

we are all inexperinaced till we try it... that line worked great all tough college by the way!

Re: Cafe' CB200 Begins - Silver Bullet - Engine Rebuild

Hey THANKS man!

So I spent a few hours this morning looking around town for the valve tappet tool I need to adjust the valves, no luck, so I ordered it. But while I was in search I met some new people, looks like I'm slowly getting to know the right people here in town. I have the hookup at a local custom cycle shop now AND... this girl who works up at O'Reiley's Auto Parts near my house rides this...

Rebel 250 bobbed to HELL! The chain roller/tensioner is a neon green skateboard wheel (her inspiration for the wheel color)!

But most important.... I finished the paint job on the motor... OPINIONS WELCOME!

Re: Cafe' CB200 Begins - Silver Bullet - Engine Rebuild

Ordered a front tire yesterday as well... along with the valve tappet tool. Cleaned up the frame, trying to get it ready for next weekend possibly!?

Re: Cafe' CB200 Begins - Silver Bullet - Engine Rebuild

Nice! Are you going to do the lower fins too? I would have left that upper cover silver or polished it instead of painting it black, but it looks great. I looked through the topic but couldn't tell for sure. Did you paint the entire motor with the high heat paint, or is it just cleaned really well?

Re: Cafe' CB200 Begins - Silver Bullet - Engine Rebuild

The Rebel 250's we used in Motorcycle Driving School were not like that :D Quite a difference from the ones we used. Nice!

Re: Cafe' CB200 Begins - Silver Bullet - Engine Rebuild

Are you going bigger than stock for the front tire? If you had to guess, what's the biggest you could go on the front and rear without having to mod anything? You mentioned having to do some grinding to go so wide on the rear...

Re: Cafe' CB200 Begins - Silver Bullet - Engine Rebuild

For the rear I went with a 110-90-18, it fits great... I did have to remove the chain guard but I was doing that anyways. One of the tabs for the chain guard should also be shaven off (havn't done this yet) but it doesn't hit, just comes close. AND I had to move the rear drum brace (not sure of the proper term), but its the arm that keeps the rear drum from spinning in circles. Didn't have to cut it or anything just moved it to another hole in the frame, allowing it to clear the tire. I'll take some photos later if I remember. For the front... I ordered a 100-90-18, I'm hoping it works. I plan on chopping the front fender anyways so I guess we'll see here shortly. It's due in on Friday I believe.
