KD - I think I speak for a lot of people when I say you aren't very good at biting your tongue.
:D :D :D

I like the "help people by offering advice rather than shit on them" mentality. That's why I've been here so long.

don't make me put on my mod pants!

constructive criticism is great. and kd has given some good advice.
keep in mind that the same advice can be given in a friendly tone, or a not so friendly tone. people are more willing to listen when they aren't being e-yelled at. i love this place because the cattiness is kept to a minimum.. let's keep it that way! :-*

First of all: I like this build. Just want to get that out of the way.

KD - I think I speak for a lot of people when I say you aren't very good at biting your tongue. A pessimistic attitude doesn't help anybody - why not offer suggestions to help instead?

We can't all be mechanics and/or machinists for a living so the "average joe" has to do what they have to do to work on their own bike.
I've actually given quite a bit of help, and advice here, and have been happy to do it, but when I see something absolutely retarded,and/ or un-safe I will speak out quite firmly against it. IMO sugar coating shit doesn't make it taste any better, so why waste the time sprinkelling.

Sorry if I'm interrupting something, but I've got a question about the wheel itself.

Does all that surface area create any problems in terms of catching crosswinds?

Carry on...

I'd so steal this idea if I could (if I had the skills).

Do your thing, enjoy your build, be proud of your ride when it's over. Each of us has our style, of building and commenting.

1) If you don't like someone's build, and can't put it into words respectfully don't comment.

2) If you don't like someone's comment on your build either do it your way and forget 'em, or change what you are doing to make the commenter happy.

3) If you don't like me giving someone encouragement on a build you don't like or don't respect, deal with it. It's their bike and my comment. Doesn't hurt you to let them or me learn the hard way, nor does it hurt me to ignore a well intentioned but poorly stated piece of advice.

Golden Rule folks. Every body put on your big boy pants so go doesn't have to put on her mod pants. I come here for friendship, reinforcement, and a well tempered "that shit looks like hammered hell" when I need it. If you need someone to flame come to my build and tear it up. I can always use a good dose of reality.

Peace,
-Daniel

Shiiiiiiiit.... you guys all think WAY too much.

This project, like all the other projects on the site, kicks ass. I think the wheels are an awesome tribute to the comstars, and if I had the tools to do work like that, man, I wouldn't even know where to start.

I'm loving it so far and can't wait to see it progress. The variety in skills and technical prowess demonstrated by our membership continues to inspire.

Shit, and here i was thinking this forum was about building bikes. ::) Disgusting, You all just fucken grow up and enjoy yourself for once.

Wait, ignore me.

I had only looked at the pics on the front page of the site and I thought we were talking about the big disc wheel. Now I see the billet comstars on the blog. Suddenly the conversation makes more sense ::) Anyway, I think they're pretty hot. Great build!

Mod pants indeed. ;)

Is it so hard for you to accept that a little praise and support goes a lot farther than dumping on someone? Is your existence so miserable that you can't just shut the hell up if you can't fit someone else's work into your particularly narrow view of things. Does it make you feel like you're swinging bigger meat when you lay your feces on someone else's ideas?

Staffy, you're absolutely correct my friend:
For my part, I apologize as I have in the past for my somewhat contentious nature. I've been a equipped with a short fuse in recent months and tend to want to defend things I like just was much as a few D-bags desperately need to dump their vitriol on the things they don't. As with everyone else, I have my own opinions: I maintain that it will always be better to be nice and pose thoughtful questions when I think there's are issues to be addressed. I don't always do so well at that but I try.

As long as you didn't hit the webbing, you're only ugly and old PJ.
I do like the perforated sheet you added.

PJ, me telling you what to do on a scoot would be like pre-ghosts Scrooge calling out Santa for being a bit of a humbug.

pj, i don't think i could question anything you do :p

Still 'prettier' than you, and, more experienced ;D
We had 'in service day' in work (couple of hours 'training' and a bunch of backslapping 'brown noser' awards)
My dept didn't get anything ;D
I'll try and get 'department' picture to post up

Glad things are looking up for you.....and you ARE an interesting kat!

It's interesting to see the reaction that this bike generates.

I'd speculate that there are two reasons. Firstly it strays from the image that many people have of what constitutes a cafe Racer. For many of us it's the reincarnation of sixties style of basic bikes, modified to look somewhat like a racer of that era. "Mags" don't fit that image QED they don't belong.

That reaction isn't right or wrong, it's natural. This project does not match the mental pattern that most people have of a Cafe.

That doesn't make it bad. It just means that for many people it isn't a Cafe Racer. It's definitely custom and it incorporates many ideas and techniques not available in teh era, but probably stretches teh envelope too much to be called a cafe racer - for most people.

The other issue is that on the web site, Grant and his buddy do the sales thing very well, but clearly invokes an emotional reaction in people who have been building and modifying bikes for years. For example, Grant said that his wheel will not have the problems that Honda had with Composite wheels. certainly, they don't have rivets to come loose, but unless he has done Finite Element Analysis and stress analysis, he doesn't "know" they will be safe. He can speculate that they should be fine, but he is presenting himself at the same time as a neophyte and an expert.

The bike is innovative and different and is almost as far from a cafe as the Phat Trakkas in my shop. Grant and his buddy are doing a great job but it might be useful for them to sit back and think about the reaction and what causes it and I think they will learn as much from that introspection as they do from the build.

And Yamaha brakes are available new for a whole lot less than those silly numbers (replicas).
