If you use spray paint anyway you could make the pattern with a stencil to save you the paint scratching. That would of course limit the design a bit.

Both good points on the stencil. I have done it where I use contact paper as the resist itself, which would be very much like making the stencil. The contact paper doesn't hold up well enough for the length of time these pieces are in the bath. It starts seeping under the edge. But as a stencil for the spray paint. That's a great idea. Especially for lettering and so forth.
