CB360 Cafe Project

Re: CB360 Cafe Project *Update Pics 2/24/11*

Kerosene works great. as said if you can get it in a container large enough. simple green or the purple stuff works great too but you have to let it soak a long time. overnight at least. and then pressure wash it right off. If you don't have a pressure washer take it to a self serve car wash.

Re: CB360 Cafe Project *Update Pics 2/24/11*

Thanks for the tips. This is what I'll do....

Pull it out tonight and seal it up. Put it in a rubbermaid tub for easy transport. Spray it down with simple green periodically through the evening. Then take it to the car wash first thing tomorrow.

Tomorrow I can scrub on it a little bit before I crack it open.

Any suggestion on scrubbing between the fins of the jug/head? I was thinking some plumbing brushes, but haven't compared the dia. to the gap of the fins.

Looking good so far. Really nice work on the seat pan. The seat cowl idea looks awesome! Great work, and good luck

Wire brush and some tweek... ha ha

Kiding of course. I've never found a "great way" to do it. Just lots of elbow grease and patience.

Cheap paint brushes will allow you to get in there, get the stiffest ones you can find. The dollar store is a good place to start. There may be better ways, but I use them all the time with my parts washer then they work well.

Re: CB360 Cafe Project *Update Pics 2/24/11*

Soaking and high pressure worked for me. My bike looked like no one had washed it in 20 years when I got it. Then I have a pressure washer and a hot water garage hook up for the hose, so I did it on my cheap dollar instead of the car wash.

The cheapo Campbell Hausfleild pressure washer at Walmart works wonders.

Pulled it and soaked it last night. I can't believe I got away with using the tub. I used to think my fiance was so mean, maybe it was just all in my head. Lol. Just kidding of course. Not to mention we just found out we're having a baby! We'll have to push the wedding back, or move it forward, but we're really excited! So, Honey, if you ever get suspicious and hack all my forums....Thank you for your patience! Haha.

Sealed everything up real good last night. Heading to the car wash in a few.

Btw, no one warned me that Simple Green concentrate smells like Jager. Just when I started acting like an adult, a relapse!

Re: CB360 Cafe Project *Update Pics 2/24/11*

Now you're gonna go out and make me smell the stuff again, I hate jager so the thought never crossed my mind.

Congrats on the kiddo, I can still remember how I was when my wife told me about my boy. ;D He's been an absolute blast to work with, I know how my dad felt now. ;)

Re: CB360 Cafe Project *Update Pics 2/24/11*

Looks like you might have to put having a kid on hold eventually so you can finish this project... or is that the other way around? ;)

Congrats on having a little one on the way.

The project is looking really nice. keep up the good work.

Peace,
Eric

Thanks. I'm definitely full throttle on the project now. Got a 7 month window to finish this thing up.

Here's what it looks like after the spray down. The Simple Green did a nice job of getting some of the surface junk off. There's a lot of oxidation on the aluminum, so it's still gonna need a bead blast or something.

Re: CB360 Cafe Project *Update Pics 2/24/11*

Got the engine tore down to the cases, I'll split it tomorrow. Everything looked as good as could be expected. The pistons look to be stock. The cylinders looked pretty good. I'll do 0.25 over on the pistons/rings and a bore to match. I'm keeping my eye out for a tensioner guide.

The only junk I found in there so far was a small piece of the tension guide that was missing. I was surprised to see that the oil pick-up screen was pretty clean and the oil filter had nothing but grime.

The odo reads 10,000 mi and the PO was my aunt. So, I have a pretty good idea of the history. Normal wear was all I expected and that's all I've found so far. Pretty excited there was nothing goofey in there.

Here are the pistons, is my assumption correct, stock?

A little wear on the skirts....

BTW, I got my eye on ebay, but if anyone has a line on a set of oversized pistons or rings, please let me know!

Re: CB360 Cafe Project *Update Pics 2/24/11*

If they are anything over they will have the number stamped on them somewhere.

Re: CB360 Cafe Project *Update Pics 2/24/11*

I posted this over in help as well....

I have a question for the engine guys out there.

I tore my engine down this past weekend and I'm trying to decide what to do with my top end. Also, I relocated to another state recently and I'm shopping around for a good machine shop at the moment. So, I would like to get some opinions here before I take it in.

Piston skirt OD: 66.85mm and 66.96mm

Cyl. bore OD: 67.00mm for both

I measured the piston skirts directly @ the bottom of the piston and I measured the bore @ the bottom as well.
I used a standard Mitutoyo Digi caliper to take the measurements.

The pistons rings were all with in spec, measured at the bottom of the bore.

Any input would be appreciated. I know the the measurements are pretty close to the service limits. If it were a perfect world I would replace everything oversized and bore, but as usual, money is tight.

Re: CB360 Cafe Project *Engine Time*

Ok I measure the rings about an inch down from the top of the bore as they will never see the bottom. I also try to measure the bore in at least 3 places, usually the top (after you clean the crap off), about a third down, and then 2/3's down. The rings will wear the bore the most, not the piston skirt, so where they run is where it will be worn out. It can be done with a ring and a feeler gauge. Measure the top with your caliper then take a ring and using a piston push it to those spots. Then get your feeler gauge out and measure the gap on the ring and then add that to the top measurement. It's not dead on but will give you a really good ballpark figure. The highest number is your measurement.

Did you take your caliper to the pins? and the rod ends? Those two spots will wear badly if the engine was ever run low on oil or with gas in the oil.

As far as running what you have, what was the compression like before you took it apart? Did you measure it? If it was where it was supposed to be, (above 160 cold and 170 hot) put the somebitch back together and run it. MAYBE, MAYBE hone the glaze off the cylinders and then re-ring it.

What do the valves look like? Have you done the acetone test to them to see if they are leaking? A well taken care of motor with 10K miles on it should still be good for at least another 15k if not more.

As for finding funny things this was in mine,

Not to mention when I first changed the oil when I got mine, the pick-up screen was clogged with what looked like a hand full of dog hair.

Re: CB360 Cafe Project *Engine Time*

I knew I should have checked the post before I got to work. Damn Barracuda blocked your pics.

I did not check the pins and rod ends. I'll check those tonight.

I checked the compression a while ago but I didn't record the results. I do remember it being low. I'll have to do the acetone test tonight as well, to make sure I wasn't loosing any through the valves.

Thanks for the input.

Re: CB360 Cafe Project *Engine Time*

Well I am not sure how interested you are in going "big bore" but a few guys have been taking the pistons out of GS850's and swapping them in. The GS850 has a bore of 69mm, the piston is a little shorter and lighter, and it has the same wrist pin diameter. So it is seriously a cheap drop in big bore. I found some +.5mm GS850 pistons on ebay and then had a tough time finding the rings for it. But since it is a 4 cylinder, I have an extra set of pistons and rings. They are 69.5mm pistons, bringing your 359 up to a whopping 383! It was only about $25/cylinder to get it bored at my local shop. If you are interested, we can talk $$.

Re: CB360 Cafe Project *Engine Time*

Actually, I might be interested in that.

BTW, $25/hole! All the shops I've found around here so far (Bowling Green, KY) have been on average $75/hole. I found one guy who does them for $42.
Wtf!

Re: CB360 Cafe Project *Engine Time*

Something I was thinking about today. I removed my starter permanently. I was wondering, if I remove the starter clutch and big starter sprocket, would a spacer be required in there? Or would the rotor stop itself on the tapered crank shaft?

I figured I might as well remove the weight of the unused parts.
