Not 100% sure, but I believe no spacer is necessary. I believe the rotor stops itself on the tapered shaft. Don't take my word for it, but I swear I saw that somewhere.

Well I just took some measurements.

Crank shaft dia @ flat (where the taper ends): 0.7870"
Rotor ID @ widest point of the taper: 0.7720"

So there's a 0.0150" difference. I don't see it going anywhere. It is tapered shaft to, so if it does go on too far, it can't go much.

Does that sound right?

If anyone happens to have their rotor cover off, can you tell me if there's play on the shaft w/ the starter gear? Can it move back and forth on the shaft a little bit?

If it does, it should be ok to remove it.

The rotor just presses on to the end of the crank shaft until it is snug, no spacer is needed, the inner clutch rides on a bushing on the crank and is held in place by the rotor. Can get rid of all of it if you like, save for rotor, hell crazypj turned some of the back of the rotor off just to get even more weight off.

Oh, I saw that. Pretty sweet. I wish I had a lathe.

I pulled everything out. Man, the screws on that starter clutch were a b#tch. I'm gonna plug the hole that goes into the crank case too. So, I don't spray oil all over when I'm timing it.

BTW, I took my top end to a machine shop that several people around here recommended. The guy was pretty knowledgeable on bikes of all sorts. He's honing the cyl.s and glass blasting the rest of the top end to clean it up. I'm going with the pistons I have. I got a fresh set of rings to put in there, too.

Also, have a brand spankin' new cam chian tensioner guide coming and a new cam chain to go with it.

So, pending the machine shop gets my stuff done on time, I should have it painted and assembled next weekend!

Sweetness man, I know the feeling, I was about to bust a gasket the day I got mine all painted and put back together. I got a polished stainless bolt kit for for it and it really trimed out nice.

Little inspiration? ;)

I used the high temp stuff meant for BBQ grills because it was about 2 bucks cheaper per can than the engine enamel. It is supposed to set after a few heat cycles so you have to sorta be careful with it in the beginning.

frogman, that is some sweet inspiration. That's a similar paint scheme as what I'll be doing. I'm leaving the cases unpainted and lightly polished, along with the side covers. Jug will be black and everything up from there I'm painting with the Dupli-Color Aluminum paint. If the paint on the head clashes with the polished cases, I guess I'll have to paint the cases too.

BTW, frogman, I saw the "contraceptive" you found in your engine, in your build thread. Pretty amazing. Everytime I build an engine, I'm always afraid of lint clogging things up. You always here those stories of guys being "so meticulous", wiping everything down, then grenade. The last engine I did, I must have pulled the filter screen like every other ride. lol.

stonenck, I got my cam chain from Les and The Vintage Advantage. He has some ebay auctions for several other cb models, except for the 360. I just asked if would take a couple of links out, then rivet it together for a couple of extra bucks. He's suppose to bill me for it today, so I'm not sure what the total cost will be. I'm sure it will be fair.

FYI, the cb750, cb-77, cb-450, (maybe more), all have 94 links in the chain. The 360 has 92L. They are all 219T type chains. So, if you have a chain splitter/riveter, you can just buy one of the more common ones, get a rivet type master link, and remove a couple of links.

I also talked to Western Hills Honda/Yamaha in Ohio yesterday, they had one cb360 cam chain in stock for $69. I'm already over budget, so I went with Les, which his list for $35 + shipping.

I'm looking into some different shox. When I had the stock ones off for paint, the wheel was just hanging all the way down to the ground, while the bike was on a center stand, and the stance looked so much better. Like a modern rocket. I need to find out how long of a shock I can put on w/ the stock swinger length.

Son of a B#tch! I was sooo stoked to get the tensioner slipper guide I ordered. I felt like I was waiting for the holy grail to show up in the mail. Well, it came in yesterday. I opened the package, guess what, it was the old version! The vintage guy at the dealership I found it specifically told me it was the updated guide. But the ends curl in towards the chian.

So, I guess I'm gonna call them first thing Mon and send it back.

....and the search continues.

If anyone has a line on a new or decent used tensioner guide. Please let me know. I know they are in hot demand, but I would sure appreciate it.

Got the 3/4" neoprene layed and cut on my seat pan. Need to smooth out the edges a little, but I'm happy with it.

Sorry, I really have no idea on the tensioner... but I really dig that seat. It'll look sick when it's done.


I wonder how easily it would smooth out with a disk grinder and a sanding disk? You would have to be really steady with your hands though.


I like the stance of your bike so far.

You could use that tensioner, the problem was servicing allowing cam chain to get too loose and the 'hammering' cracked blade.
It can happen with the updated one if chain is allowed to get too loose.
The difference is, if the early type breaks, it can lock up crank, the later one drops into crankcase when it breaks

Thanks for the compliments on the seat pan. I actually got it pretty smooth by heating up a thin piece of scrap aluminum and just "smoothing" it out. I think I'll just let it wear from hear out.

Yeah, I'll save the $70 that I spent on that old tensioner for something else. The one that came out of my engine doesn't look quite as good as that one in the auction, but close. I got two/three months before start up anyway. I think I'll keep looking for a new one, or damn good one on ebay.
