CB750K7 Cafe Racer Build

Feeling a little hung over but tank-wang could soon be over. It's coming on Tuesday (or so they say). Just got to wait for the other one. How impatient can one man be?

Doc, are you getting the tank from Richard over at Tab II Classics? He does some great work but the shipping over to Canada was a bit to rich.

Hi snowman. I know of Richards' work and I spoke to him a couple of weeks ago about a particular tank I need. I'm taking a rolling chassis down there sometime soon to see what looks good with what. The tanks I'm waiting for are from someone else who's work is so good it's astonishing! The problem I have with them is their communication is awful. You feel like you're causing trouble by asking the simplest of questions. Things are late without any explanation & they may or may not pick up the phone or reply to e-mails. So, I'm not prepared to give their name out here as a) I don't want to piss them off and b) I can't promote a company who treats their customers so poorly.

On another level, I have now ordered tanks from various places so in the future I won't have these issues again. It'll take some time but I hope to stock some Manx and CR750 tanks and if I can help with shipping to Canada ,or anywhere else, I will.

Sorry for the slow-down in posting but I've been waiting for the tank and seat combo's to arrive. I just got this photo from the suppliers and one set is ready to be shipped today. I'm beside myself with excitement. Even though it's not the tank I had designed for this bike I'll try and do something good with it. More pics once I get my oily hands on it.

Soon......

So, we got the tank and seat but, the way I've set this bike up, no way can I use them without moving the oil tank, and most of the electrics including the coils. It'll have to wait for the next bike and I'LL HAVE TO TRY TO BE A LITTLE MORE PATIENT!

Anyway, I threw it on so we could have a look and took the seat to the trimmer. See what you think - I'd be happy to get some thoughts.

Sure is mate.

Pitty that tank won't fit. It looks bloody awesome. I am all for the diamond pattern in the seat covering, looks good I recon.

The tank was meant for another CB750 I'm about to start building but it'll need the oil tank, and wiring moving to get it to hook up properly. Never mind, I should get the right tank in a couple of weeks.

I've always wondered about waterproof suede-like material. Can you post some additional details please
(like commercial name and where you got it from)?

The stitching pattern looks nice. Hand made?

Thanks
M.

I'll try and get the info re' the seat material for you. The guy that's doing the seats does a lot of marine work - yachts and speed boats - so he talked me out of real leather or Alcantara as its not up to getting wet too many times. The only trouble with this one is the colour range is limited but black is black (it does contain two rather horrid shades of pink, though, if anyone is building a Barbie & Ken bike)!

Cuba Libra - Seat cover: I found the supplier of that faux diamond stitch suede and I'm trying to sort out some decent terms. Minimum purchase is 100cm which is enough for around 4 seats. If you'd like a small sample PM me with your address details and I'll get it in the post?

Doctor Jones: thanks for this. I wasn't considering purchasing anything right now. I would however like to know more about this fabric so that I can have the choice of using it next time I need to upholster something.
That's why I asked for its commercial name and the shop(s) that sell it.

And is the diamond stitching part of the fabric? that's what I understood from your message...

Thanks
M.

I'll have that info for you ASAP. In my experience, people are often cagey when you start asking questions about a product. It's like they get scared thinking you'll know something they know. Weird! I'm close to the source and when I know, you'll know. And yes, the stitching is integral to the fabric.

That is an absolutely beautiful looking bike, and very nice write up on the build sir. Kinda gives me the kick in pants i need to get back after it on my 77 cb750f. Definitely subscribed to thread.

And i think that seat material will look great!

Hi all. Yet more delays from the tank builder and still no end date. I started messing around with ideas to see if I could come up with a reason to change this bike design and use the tank and seat I do have rather than save it for the next project. Have a look and see what you think? Is there the makings of something sweet here or would you wait? I don't want to build a bike out of desperation. Help!!!

Sorry Doc, but I am confused. I thought your tank builder was fabricating an alloy CR replica tank for you, but that appears to be what you already have and are asking about.

For the record I really like what you have on the bike now, didn't you mention there were fitment issues?

Sorry, I know - I confuse myself most of the time! This bike was supposed to have a Wide-Line Manx tank similar to the TT Nortons of the day so that's what everything was arranged around. The next bike was to have the CR style tank. The fuel taps come out of the rear bottom of the CR tank straight into the battery compartment so all that has to be re-arranged. Anyway, apart from that, the speedo and tacho are wrong and I'm not happy with a bunch of other stuff so I've scrapped the idea and I'll wait for the Manx tank.

It'll be a long and tortuous wait but I hope it'll be worth it.

Forgot this part....tanky was making two tanks and seats but hadn't completed the tooling for the Manx so I got the 2nd tank first. Make sense? No - me neither.
