DTT Barber Build 2012

Tightening and adjusting in preparation for riding soon.

Going old school on the beer.

Ok, so I got her running, not well, but enough to make it to the Meltdown the other weekend. It was a really wet trip but thanks to Mr. E and Jenn everyone had a great time.

I threw an old tank on her so I could ride and put a piece of foam from my old seat on the pan. Not ideal but it worked. The tank is rusty and dented and leaks if I fill it up. I also have to hold it on with zip ties. Hopefully that will be remedied soon. This is how I will be bringing her to the Thaw. Functional, but barely. She runs fine but won't idle....fouls plugs. I think something is wrong with the carbs. I got some new UNI filters and installed them last night but didn't get a chance to run it since it was so late and the neighbors complain.

Here is the only pic I have. I'm on the far right.

I am still waiting for my tank to get here from Birmingham, but I have been doing some work on this thing.

Some of you guys saw it at The Thaw. It runs/ran, but not well and the charging system wasn't working, which is why I always had it plugged in. All the hassle of a plug-in hybrid and none of the benefits. :)

I rode it a bunch more after that. In fact, I didn't have a car for about a month and that was my only transportation. Well after about a month of consistent use, the old rusty tank I had on there finally gave up the ghost and started pissing gas out of the bottom. I didn't catch it until the next day and it ate the paint off of the frame backbone and part of the engine. So I drained the tank, took it off, and I haven't been able to ride it since. This weekend I finally got around to fixing the paint. It wasn't a lot of work, this isn't a show bike. I just scraped the loose paint off, cleaned it and sprayed the bare spots. It looks OK and you wouldn't notice unless you really looked. I didn't take any pics because you can't really see much.

I also rerouted the throttle cable because the 2-1 junction was interfering with the tank sitting down on the frame.

I also addressed another concern I had. I mounted my starter solenoid onto the new battery box Mothgils made. This is just below the new UNI filters I put on. I noticed that when it rains, water collects on the bottom of the filters and I was afraid this may short out the solenoid, causing the starter to spin. So, I got some liquid electrical tape and covered the terminals. I also used this stuff to cover the exposed terminal on my new coils.

Flug, do you need a CB450 tank to run in the meantime? I have one hanging in the garage that you could use for a while.....not pretty, but not leaking gas either.

Did some demolition work on my old jacket this weekend. This is my old riding jacket that, well, is a little out of style and has no armor. It was OK, but I like my new one much better. So this one gets recycled into me seat. If you recall from a previous post, the tank is blue. I think this dark brown will accent it very nicely.

I fully disassembled the back and arms which had the largest pieces of material. Should be plenty to make the seat cover from. It has a nice weathered dark brown look to it. Should turn out great.

I used a seam ripper to take it apart.

I'm going to go for something like this, but with dark stitching.

I am going to get a quote from a local upholsterer. Should be cheap since it is fairly simple and I'm providing the leather. If it is too much, I will consider doing it myself. I don't think my wife's sewing machine could handle the leather though.

When the seat is done and I know how much I have left over, I am going to make a battery strap and a tool roll and whatever else I can think of.

Mike, jacket leather isn't too hard to sew with a standard machine. It's the thick apolstery stuff you need a heavier machine for, that should look pretty cool with the shiny blue tank.

I was talking with my friend who runs the local Tandy leather and he was saying on thinner stuff like that, you can get a leather needle for a standard sewing machine and go to town.

Mike has been more than patient with me on this. Ran into a bunch of issues along the way but in the end it turned out great. Had a softball sized dent under bad filler under the old paint. Pounded that out and fixed it. First time i painted it the clear lifted, so back to base it went. Redo, try harder, and in the end a tank worthy of going on Mikes's scooter. Thanks buddy for being so patient and I hope you dig the shit out of it brother.

Hot damn that looks good. If I remember correctly there was about 7 pounds of bondo on that tank, wasn't there?
