DTT Barber Build 2012

Found a reasonably priced petcock online.

Apparently this is a 20mm size that Honda only used for 1975-1976 so there isn't much of an aftermarket.

I found one for a cb750 at www.vintagecb750.com for $35 instead of $70 on ebay.

They also have them at www.cb750supply.com for $40.

Although www.vintagecb750.com is in Canada, I bought it from them since they also have the cb750 rear tank rubber holders. I bought one and will use that to mount my tank instead of trying to use the cheesy thing I came up with. I'm sure it will take some modification but it should work better.

New tank rubber is a good, good thing.. I wonder why I put up with old rotten ones. The clobber is looking great man!!

Parts came in.

The petcock is definitely aftermarket but looks decent. However it didn't come with any gaskets so I will have to find some. Just fits in the space available. The fuel line routing should be interesting.

Also, as I expected, the tank rubber is too wide so it will get narrowed to fit the tank and drilled for the mount.

Also, the hardware for my seat mount came in. I will post how I'm mounting it when I get the seat pan attachment completed.

Got the tank mount installed last night. I still need to clean up the aluminum plate..... straighten the edges, round the corners and paint it, but the tank is securely attached. There were already 2 threaded inserts in the frame there which is why the bolts are where they are.

I should be able to get the seat pan attachment finished and the fuel lines run this week.

Woot! I got her running yesterday and rode her over to the new house (we are in the middle of moving). The fuel line routing needs some tweaking. The size and position of the petcock next to the carb doesn't leave much room. I'm also grateful for CCRider showing my how to safety wire the fuel lines since the clamps I bought are the wrong size.

When I first got her started, she was only running on the right cylinder. The left wasn't firing at all. Although I fixed it, I'm not sure how. I had been messing around with the PAMCO ignition trying to get the position of the left pickup corrected. Of course, it might have also just been a loose connection. My typical method for fixing anything is just taking it apart and putting it back together.

All I will have time to do before barber is finish up the seat pan attachment and clean her up. I can't wait to ride around Alabama.

That's cool Mike! Glad the safety wire clamps worked out for you. My 450 does the right side run only thing too sometimes, when I first start her up after sitting for a while. Usually goes away after a minute or two. Looking forward to seeing you and Nixon at Barber.

Wish I was going to be there to see it, Flug.

CC - those valve stem caps you gave me are now proudly riding on my 'wing.

I polished up a pair for the BMW as well. Can't wait to see her Mike!

I finally got to go on a ride yesterday. It was a beautiful early fall day with a slightly chilly breeze and a warm sun. I pointed Nixon down some Carolina back roads and rode them until they ended. It was amazing.

About halfway through the ride I noticed it was missing at half to WOT so I stopped at an auto parts store. Checked the plugs and they were black. I bought hotter plugs (B7ES) and was on my way.

I dare say she has never run so well since I bought her. Of course, she still doesn't run great, but much better than before. I still have some tuning to do. Now to get her cleaned up and ready for Barber.

My first leather work complete. Strap from my old riding jacket turned into a battery strap. You can't really see my hack job but it is strong and gave me the confidence to move onto my next project which will be a tool roll. Then I will upholster my seat. Shit, if a hick from 'tuckey can do it, so can I. ;)

Now that I have a deadline, things are picking up a little on this project. I added an extension to the front of the seat pan to cover the rear tank mount. I have also drilled all of the holes for the rivets to attach the leather. Next up is the foam.

END OF LINE

Yes Ma'am! Actually, I'm trying to have it done before the Meltdown in case I am able to ride up there for Friday night.

The weather is starting to get nice so I would like to have it done sooner so I can get some riding in on these 70° days we get occasionally.

First two layers of dense foam are on. Should have the final one on tonight. I need to take it over to my dad's house on Thursday so I can do the final foam shaping.

I have also been working on the tool roll I said I was going to make to practice my sewing on. I had to make an inventory of what I wanted to put in it so that I know how big to make it. I'll post pics when I make some progress.
