First time cb400 Project

After putting the carbs back on some how the floats became stuck and kept hydrolocking my engine. Tore them down yesterday and cleaned everything up, now everything seems in working order except one thing. No spark. Tomorrow is going to be finding why I have no spark and cleaning the chrome and frame up. Should have it up and running by Tuesday night once I get the new tire on.

Keep us updated on the tare down.

Made a lot of progress today. Mainly in the paint area. Tomorrow I take the top end off to hopefully fix the bike.

Anyone give a heads up on how to get the spring off the shock so I can clean and paint it? eric the gang* Lets see some pics hommie.

I'll post the whole update after the weekend has past.

I saw your project on caferacer.net forum and found the DTT site. Great site and I figured this is an appropriate place to introduce myself, at least to the 400 t guys.

Wicked shot. Great to meet another 400T'er.

I'm having the same issue with no spark too. I'm pretty sure mine is a ground issue although Ive had a few people say it could be the ignition module. It was running before I had it torn apart. I'm very interested to find out what your problem is.

Cheers

Ground also. As soon as I ground it out I get power, however I still cant get spark. I hope I didn't cook the coil, local Honda dealer quoted me for $130 for a new one. I also noticed my starter magnetic switch sometimes gives me good power, some times it doesn't.

I'm getting a new tank, because the one i have now is horrible, How much kreem do you think I need for a 3.7 gallon tank? Or are there other liners I should use?

POR15 without any question (in my mind anyhow) is much better than KREEM. Thinner, spreads easier and won't peel off ever.

I've never used Kreeme, but I just did my tank with POR-15 and love it. The stuff is very easy to work with and it tough as nails when done. I tried getting it off the can it came in when it hardened...no way! Tough stuff.

I'm liking the idea of por-15, is one order enough for a 3.7 gallon tank? I'm assuming it is. =[. Sorry for the thread hijack, but it might be of helpful information in the future =]

Canuck, are you getting any power from the 3 yellow wires under the 12V regulator? It looks like I've got no power coming out of the 12V regulator to the yellow wires.

Anyone have a good wiring schematic, especially for the grounds? I have one but it lacks grounds and its in black and white.

I juuuust redid the whole wiring for my bike, don't trust the clymers, I've personally found about 8-9 big mistakes in it. I'm not sure about the haynes. I basically chopped the main wiring bunch and wired one by one for each accessory/function. There are more than a handful of useless wires.

Here's the important part...does it work? ;)

I just need to know what is needed and what isn't. The manual sucks balls. Probably doesn't help that my manual is on my PC.

My Brotherinlaw sent me this.... not sure if it helps you but it clarified it for me.... leaving for a few weeks in the AM... see you guys when I get back.... can't wait to see what you've all done with yer bikes.

Looks like its the CDI unit. Honda wants $300, but I found a few on Ebay for about $75-130. Once I can 100% say its the CDI I'm going to order one.

So I have made a shit ton of progress on this bike. Like I said as of Friday night it was down to the bare frame and forks with many little (and sometimes big) zip locks in a box. I stripped the frame and all corresponding parts and got out the rattle cans. I took apart the top end and hopefully I have found the problem in the carbon particles that were lined on the inside of the right cylinder wall. The right side again, read a compression level of 90psi as a result of what we think to be a partial seize due to a lack of engine oil as I was going uphill (masterminded my yours truly). When I lost throttle power I came to the conclusion (with the help of the DTTers and a friend) that I had possibly scored the pistons. EBAY TO THE RESCUE!!! Scored a whole cylinder head for $100.00 and with the top end off I am checking the quality of the new head. Other than that I put most of the bike back together other than the top end and the electrical. I have a friend who said he would help me re-wire the bike. Last night I started hacking at my seat creation of Great Stuff and florist foam (courtesy of my step mom the florist) and I have come up with the general shape of the single seat so I am pretty pleased. Next step is to make sure the pistons and rings are to the good, put the top end together, wire up this biatch and then lay some glass and FIRE IT UP MAN. I have pics and I will post them tonight.

Made a hell of a lot more progress than me.

I'm getting no power to my CDI, I hooked up a volt meter to the leads going to the CDI. I get up to 14V in AC current, then suddenly my meter reads OL, so it may not be my CDI. Ugh I hate electrical.

Sweet, diagram helped a ton, thanks(some stuff wasn't the same, but it worked in the end).

New ignition switch is on order, unfortunatly it won't be here till next week. But in the mean time I'm cleaning up the chrome, fixing the wires that are strung EVERYWHERE, and with a little luck I'll be riding it again by next week.

Just a stocker, at this point I(and my friends) just want to get it on the road before I really tear it down in late November/Early December(when there is more funds too).
