First time cb400 Project

I will try all of these things.
question though...would this be plausible in light of the fact that the bike was running so well... in other words could th floats have been messed up while the bike was sitting off?

My bike ran fine one day then ran like shit the next. If something's getting into the carbs and gumming them up anything's possible.

NOW HEAR THIS!!!!

I cleaned out the carbs and the filter again. That seemed to stop the problem of the engine starting. Now however, I am getting a really piss poor idle. I had the bike running up and down the street but the more it ran the harder it was to keep it idling. Now I know I still need to adjust the carbs (and probably rejet) but I am thinking its the CDI. Is it possible for a CDI to get worse as the bike warms? Or realy any part of the ignition system... Im so close but really the bike is doing what it did before the rebuild which is idle poorly and have low engine performance the more I run it. Let me know what you think comrads.

I mean I set the timing when I put it all back together, providing that setting the timing from what Clymer told me is unscrewing a nut while it sits at idle and then screwing it back in.

I talked to a friend and asked him if my CDI unit could get worse as the bike runs/warms up. He said that as the unit warms up the coils expand and if its bad (which I think mine is) the spark would get progressively weaker causing it not to idle etc. I think thats what is going on with my bike. It starts out at a certain point and as it continues to run, usually for no longer than a period of 10 minutes by the end I have a bike that wont turn. Any takers on this theory?

Where do I get a brand new CDI and what specs do I need to consider when looking for one?

New CDI in and she runs!

And of course something had to go wrong, pouring gas back in the tank, I spill it on my paint. Oh well, it was only the first coat, this weekend I'll fix it, get some clear coat on after it too.

How much did it run you? And was it brand new or a new used?

check the petcock as well. sounds like it's a fuel and tuning issue.

Also, a long shot but I had a sorta similar issue on my last bike that turned out to be a crack in the lower case (well a small hole actually) that would not let the bike hold oil pressure. It would start and idle well, then ride a couple of blocks before dying. Pull over, kick it back up and ride two more blocks, rinse, repeat. Eventually patching the hole in the case with an aluminum plate got it running like a bat outta hell - pulled through all gears.

Just got off the phone with the dude at Cycle Recycle (really knowledgeable) and he said it sounds more fuel than electrical... Tanks not venting properly, petcock is bad or the line is kinked... That is a much easier fix than electrial... and shoud be free too. God I hope its that easy.

try cleaning out the petcock. i had similar issues. i had already cleaned it once and after pulling everything else apart i realized the carb bowls were empty. no gas. cleaned them and have no probs since. easy to do.

About $300 from honda.

I scored one off ebay for $45 shipped. Used yes, but it works.

If your fuel is good. Get the bike warmed up, once you get to the point where it seems to fail pull the plug and see if you're getting spark. I really don't think its your CDI. It doesn't get affected by warming or cooling(unless you're getting a weak spark).

One more thing....

SFV people I need to get these carbs adjusted anyway so... Who is a person I could take it to and how much am I looking at to have it done?

So I cleaned out the petcock and I am still having the same fuel issue when the petcock runs in the "ON" position however, it flows fine in "RES". Although I am going to get a new petcock (are there any sweet aftermarket ones? Where do I get them) but is there any harm in running the bike temp in reserve?

Also, took a vid of the bike today. Is that mean backfire carb related or spark related?

As far as I know running in reserve is fine, you're just s o l if you run out of gas.

My CM pops like that too, pretty sure it's a sync issue...

I rejet after pod filters, I live in Rhode Island, roughly 60m above sea level. I chose to replace them with 120 and 98, works pretty damn well. Big change, it barely ran with the stock jets. Should be more than enough for what you need. Ideally I would jump up to 125, but the local shop didn't have those. Good luck.

OK so I got some work done today:

1. Got the front brake mounted, bled the line, and working nicely again....
2. License plate bracket modified and mounted the license plate.
3. Worked on the cafe seat a little. Tried to fill the gap between the seat pan and the frame being that I cut the pan unevenly when I cut the rust off originally.
4. Ordered my main jets (size 88) from ebay but I have a question now...

I purchased my shizzle from this dude (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Keihin-Round-99101-393-Main-Fuel-Jet-Kehein-Carburetor_W0QQitemZ170270478608QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item170270478608&_trkparms=72%3A727%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14#ht_2259wt_0)
but I only bought the main jets and I still need the idle... are these what I would need?:

Let me here is 400 brothers!

I measured the jets that I have, they're 8mm. Your second link is to a 7mm jet. Your looking for secondary main jets? If so, they should be the same model as the primary jets you ordered, just a bigger size. What size jets are you looking for now. I have some size 118 and 72 jets that I'm not using if you want them. Also check this place out http://www.motorcyclecarbs.com/Keihin_Main_Jet_99101-393_C78.cfm They also have an identification chart in there as well.

UPDATE:
So I received my new jets (mains on Thursday and secondary last night) and man does that shit make a difference. I only got to put around the block last night at like 11 (sorry if you are my neighbor but I was like a kid on xmas) and the puffing seems to have been severely minimize and almost disappeared when warmed up.

Oh I think I forgot to say this as well… when I went to put my primary jets on I realized that when I first cleaned the carbs back in July I switch the jets around putting the secondary’s in the mains and vice versa… explains everything and would have saved me about 3 months of work. Just food for thought that Im a fucking idiot. But hey…. My bike looks much better than it did back then now so I guess its not all in vein.

Also, when I took it for a ride this weekend with my lady we went over a speed hump (thank you Cal Trans and your infinite wisdom) the extra weight from the lady being on the back cause the tail light to hit the tire and explode in to a thousand little pieces…. Im still deciding if I should make the woman pay for the shit or just tell her to go on a fucking diet. In any event I need a new light and IM thinking of doing a side mount LED with a license plate frame attached but that’s looking pretty pricey from what I can tell ($100.00- $180.00 online) or just get a small cat eye to replace it.

I make all my own side mounts... they are super cheap to make yourself.. i just get some angle brackets from a hardware, cut a back plate out of alum (flexes) then just attache it all with stainless screws, got a show plate (chrome bracket that goes around liscense plate) from auto zone... hook it all up... if you want a light you can get a LED and use that as well... here are some pics
after all is said and done i hit it with some black appliance epoxy paint (exact match to powder coat) looks great and works great!

as far as what to tell the old lady... i tell mine if her ass hangs over the seat and not on it she is not welcome to ride... call it the butt-o-meter... my old rocket had NO FAT GIRLS stitched in the seat (prev owner did it)
