GS450 "Sport" - Done!

Re: GS450 "Sport" - painted wheels....

Thanks fellas! I might skip painting the tins for a while and concentrate on getting everything else back in working order. Still have all the wiring to do, along with fitting some modern carbs. The paint isn't THAT bad, but it will be obvious that it wasn't redone with everything else.

Re: GS450 "Sport" - Finally! Rear wheel mounted......

Picked up the rear wheel from the shop today.....

And got it mounted in the swinger! Left side:

And the right side:

A pretty crappy pic, and not as interesting as the wheel......but I got the instrument cluster, ignition switch, etc mounted:

I don't know if it was the 100/90 Shinko, or maybe the wrong zip ties, or what. But I got the front tire mounted last night the old fashioned way (the rear is waiting for the shop to do it):

That's interesting. Maybe the narrower rim was the stumbling block? I remember the front tyre I put on the XT500 was a bastard to get on even at the tyre machine (21 x 1.85 rim), but the 150 on the front of the Intruder was a piece of cake with zip ties (15 x 4.50 rim).

Looking good now Rich ;)

Re: GS450 "Sport" - Finally! Rear wheel mounted......

I think you're right Hillsy. When I picked up the rear today, I asked if it gave him any problems. - he said it did actually. Obviously he used a machine as well, but he specifically mentioned the narrow wheel causing an issue (remember: both my front and rear wheels are 1.85" wide).

Either way, they are mounted up now. And thanks Hillsy! I'm hoping to make some good progress throughout the week on this.....

Re: GS450 "Sport" - Finally! Rear wheel mounted......

yes, the skinnier the wheel the less room for the beads to squish in and angles are tighter. Wheels look great Rich. I really like the snowflakes in that colour.

Re: GS450 "Sport" - Finally! Rear wheel mounted......

Rich, do you think you could have squeezed a 120 tire on the rear rim? I have the same wheels, and I'd really like to go wider than the 100 that's on it now. I've looked at mine, and it looks like there's clearance with the swingarm.

Re: GS450 "Sport" - Finally! Rear wheel mounted......

Thanks Mike! Me too!

Honestly Bill, a 120/90 is right on the edge of being too big for the L model's 2.15" wheel. So even a 110/90 is too big for the S/E wheel.....that being said, I wouldn't be scared to run a 110/90 on it.

Factory was a 110/90, no?

Re: GS450 "Sport" - Finally! Rear wheel mounted......

No - factory size was a 3.5"-18". A straight conversion to metric would be a 90/100-18, but the wheel width is ideal for 100/90-18. That's why I said 110/90 would be the largest........and I would even go to a 110/80 (less sidewall to flex).

Re: GS450 "Sport" - Finally! Rear wheel mounted......

Thanks for the input. I'm running an enduro-style knob tire now, so I'm familiar with tire flex, lol.
I just know I want to go wider than what I have currently, and not do a knob tire. You really do feel the difference. I went with the knob style since I encounter loose gravel a fair bit, but I've been told there are plenty of other options that will hold the pavement better, and still handle gravel well.
Anyway, sorry to hijack!! :D

Re: GS450 "Sport" - Finally! Rear wheel mounted......

All good man!

I have a spare set of wheels for the GR with Kenda dual sports mounted (can't remember the model now though....). I like them - they don't handle like a good set of Avons, but for some of PA's messed up roads they are nice.

I hear you. I'm 10 minutes from the PA line, and ride the backroads in Lancaster County quite a bit. You get spoiled on Maryland roads!!

Re: GS450 "Sport" - Copper vomit

Posting from my phone again, which fights with Photobucket ......But I got the bars drilled for the tabs on the stock controls:

And since I had the bars off, I installed the GR650's steering stem cover:

Re: GS450 "Sport" - Copper vomit

Got both controls installed, but only took a pic of the right side for some reason.....

Then started running the wire harness.......fun, fun, fun.

And I just want to say - thanks to Pete on the GSResources for such a detailed build. I found the wiring harness routing by searching thru his build. Thanks bud!

Re: GS450 "Sport" - Copper vomit

I'm going to butt in again. ;D

Interesting you drilled your bars for tabs. I cut my tabs off so I could orient the controls how I liked them. They don't move on you once you clamp them down. If you like the stock orientations, then ignore my ramblings. ;)

Re: GS450 "Sport" - Copper vomit

All good Bill! I actually did a test fitment while the bike was on the bench. Mounted the seat and foot pegs, and climbed aboard. So I know they will be "close".

Re: GS450 "Sport" - Copper vomit

Really diggin the progress on the bike.Good deal finding the wiring routing on GS Resources.

Re: GS450 "Sport" - Copper vomit

Glad my build thread was useful Rich! I knew there was a reason I put lots of detail there :p

Love your new Offspring sig. quote too... that song rocks (as do all of their songs of course)...

Re: GS450 "Sport" - Copper vomit

Haha! I was just talking to a friend about that quote. He said 90% of people would never recognize it.
