Installed new ignition coils, now my cb450 won't run :(

sorry i never got around to taking pictures for you (I completely forgot). I have my bike taken apart somewhat right now, do you still need them or is it too late?

The B6ES plugs made a difference! The bike didn't stall! I was able to ride around for a longer time. It did stall however but I think it was due to my left carb fuel routing. There is also a fuel filter in my left fuel line, but the right does not have one.

I just checked the plugs and they're clean!

How did you check float levels?
with carbs inverted as shown in manual or tilted ablout 70~degrees to just contact shut off valve?
What jetting do you have? (pilot/main)
did you drop nedles?

To check the floats, I just removed the bowls while the carbs were still on the bike. I made a float level gauge out of an old credit card.

As far as jetting I have 150 mains and 38 pilot (I think).

There's no way to adjust the needles on the 450 so I left it as is.

I changed the left fuel line routing and I have to yet to check if the bike will stall or not. I'll keep you guys updated when I get out of class!

That sounds like the problem - you need to have the carbs off the bike and inverted to check / adjust the float height.

No, he used the correct method to check CB450 carbs.

Float height may be OK by that method, did you switch fuel on and check flow stops completely?
You probably need to set float level 1~2mm too high, it will lean out midrange slightly
main jet is too big, unless your running open headers and pods, in which case, its slightly too big. ;D
125 is stock in 450, 130 in 500t.
try some 140~145.
You are going to have a problem in midrange without stock airbox, need to find some different taper needles.

I believe he used this method..... http://www.hondatwins.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=780

130s are stock for '66-71. 145s are stock for '72-74. Not sure about the 500Ts, but that's not what he has.

That's correct. I used the float method from hondatwins. And yes I set the floats with the petcock on.

PJ, I'm running pod filters and straights with homemade copper baffles. If I recall, Gage Work Composites is running a similar intake/exhaust setup and he's at 150/155. Not sure what his elevation is though.

The bike seems to run quite dandy midrange, but then again this is my first bike so I'm not sure how it's supposed to feel lol. I can try some 145s but I'm not sure where to get them. I don't why to buy a whole set.

Did you try bypassing the inline fuel filter?? I've seen them starve the carbs of fuel before, would seem like a logical place to start if you are having problems with that carb in particular..

was it running OK before you fitted coils or did you do a bunch of things at same time?
the baffle sounds a bit small, if pipes are short it will have effect of shortening them further.
Probably runs real rich and chokes after 4,500rpm?

I'm getting decent power around that range.

I actually took the bike to school today! Very fun, but I kept it under 50mph haha.

I've run into another problem:
There is white smoke coming out of the breather tube. I think it maybe burning oil. Does that mean I need new piston rings?

I think oil smoke out of the exhaust is due to worn rings. No idea about the breather. Might be rings....

Hmm...

When I start the bike and hold the revs a bit to warm up, I get some white smoke from the exhaust but it goes away after that. I'm thinking about bringing it in to a shop, but I'd like your guys' opinions first. I though I'd never bring it to a shop but when you you've had enough, you've had enough.

I don't think white smoke out the exhaust on startup is very bad. It always did that on my old hawk and I rode it for 6 years.

White smoke on start-up is typically a sign of worn valve stem seals (oil weeps past the seal and down the valve guides into the chamber). Not a critical problem, but a top end re-build to fix.
