My 81 GS450 Cafe Build

Re: My 81 GS450 Cafe Build, renamed "Nancy Whiskey"

That's pretty cool Bill! Hopefully it's just as useful when you're actually riding. Do you have the eBay link handy so I don't have to search it out on my phone?

Here's a current buy it now:

I'm really impressed by the light output for a $100 LED headlight that's basically plug and play. The only thing you have to do is crimp some male slot-style terminals in the harness that comes with the light and plug the wires into your factory headlight harness.
Since my bike has an always-on headlight, I had to wire the running light (little LED in the middle) into the low beam circuit, so it's on with the low beam, and turns off when I flip the high beams on.
It's definitely going to be a lot better than my stock headlight!!

Nice work man! Will definitely free up some load on the notoriously "awesome" Zook charging systems :)

Definitely a big plus to LED lights!!
The only incandescent bulbs left on the bike are in the gauges.

Thanks man! It does look promising .....

I'm really starting to like the way this bike is looking. Can't wait to swap a GS450E tank and a smaller cafe tail.....

What tail section you putting on it?

Something like this:

I'm wanting one with an upturned rear so I can mount my taillights under it. Or maybe cut some notches to flush mount my current tails. Not sure what I'm going to do with the tag yet, though. I'll probably shorten the seat section up a bit, so the tail section only covers maybe half the back tire.

Nice man that will look pretty sick, shorten the tail up a bit. I just got my tail section in the other day from airtech, quality work from them if you have not ordered one yet.

Bill, have you found a 450 "E" tank yet? Don't know if you saw it, but I'm working on fitting that 850 tank to my 650......

Not a single one. Not even a beat up example.
So when you're ready.......... ;D

I've been scouring eBay, for everything from bare DIY stuff, to fully painted and upholstered seats. I like the DIY stuff, since I'll paint it anyway, and probably reuse my current seat pan, since it is already modified to fit my GS.

Aw man, there was a good clean one on eBay that sold for like $50 about a month ago.

Big Rich, how is the tank swap going?

Ugh, don't tell me that!!
I go on there every few days looking for one.

Good luck finding that tank, I was looking for one since I purchased my 450t two years ago and -just- found one locally on Craigslist out of the blue. It was in pretty rough shape but has cleaned up nicely thus far.

The conversion of the mounts has also been super simple. A small bracket for the rear of the tank and the removal of some old front mounts.

Got any pics of what you came up with?

Yeah, later today I can post them for you. I still haven't made the bracket for the rear but it'll be simple. Especially when you've got access to a CNC Router. ;D

Cool, I appreciate it.

CNC router, sure. I keep on in my back pocket. ;D

So, I took a couple quick pictures for you.

So the stock coil mounts had to be removed as well as the stock front tank mounts. The coils will be attached with a bracket such as this:

Clamps to the upper tube.

Here's the front mount. I drilled out the hole that the cover was screwed into and put a 3/8" rod cut to size through with some stop washers to keep it from backing out.

The rear. I plan on making an aluminum bracket that will bolt to the two stock mount bolt holes and have a tab to bend up at an angle for the tank mounting bolt.

Had to throw this one in there. The bike as a whole. I don't plan on using that seat, its too big (and my room mates) but something similar.

Hope this helps.
