My 81 GS450 Cafe Build

Hey, I know you're considering the Sport model tank for this bike. You might want to jump on this before it's too late!

http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/showthread.php?t=204319

He's parting out his 450 E and seems to have the tank still. I know you're on the GS Resources so I'm sure he'd have a reasonable price for you.

Finally picked up a new seat:

Couldn't beat the price for a compete seat that just needs paint. I went with the turned up tail so I could mount my tails under it.

Got the new seat mocked up. Fits like a glove!!
I chopped the ends off the frame where the stock fender mounts were.
I painted the new seat all green, in the same color over black base as the rest of the bike. I'll post pics of it painted tomorrow after it's dried.
Bad news is the wires pull off of the cheapy eBay tail lights I had, so I'll need something new.

I like that tail section a wee bit more than the previous, not that I didn't like the old one, just slims down the tail a little more.

Not to get way off topic but what year is the bel air in the back ground?

Thanks!! I like this seat a lot more. The old one was just too big for the rest of the bike, I felt.

The car is my 55 210. Bel Air was the top trim level, 210 was mid range, 150 was base. I'm a hot-rodder before a bike guy, I admit. :D
Here's some more pics:

Looks a helluva lot better! Looking real good!

Thanks!!
It even makes the tank look a little less out of place. At least in my opinion. ;D

Gonna pick up something like this for a tail light:

Sweet looking car. Used to wrench on a 57 Bel Air with a 383 stroker that had a Whipple charger on it. Damn that was a fun car to ride around in, I say ride around in cause I was a really young whipper snapper back then as my father says and my neighbor wouldn't let me drive it.

As for the tail, I like it much better and as you said, it flows better with the tank.

Thanks man!! Ultimately, this will have a polished 6-71 poking through the hood. ;D

Went with this for a tail: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=251229282358
I plan to mount it up under the rear lip of the tail section, to keep it nice and clean.

Nice! good proportion to the tank and the tail light snugs in nicely.

Looking good!

Thanks!!
I would maybe leave the stock tank on it now, if it didn't have a couple of sizable dents in it.
But the GS450 Sport tank from Big Rich is in the mail as we speak...... ;D

Good purchase. That tank is gonna look great on there.

I think so too.

Now that it has a proper seat on it, and I can actually ride in a more sporty stance, I see why everyone goes with rear sets. :D
It's nice to be able to sit upright when I want to, or lay down when I want to. I was stuck upright all the time before.
It's not horrible, but I feel a little crunched up with by butt against the back of the seat and my feet on the pegs. I'm 5'10" with short legs, so that helps a bit.

Got my new tank from Big Rich this morning, and didn't waste any time getting it sanded and painted:

I pretty much just aped his paint scheme, but in green and gold instead of red and silver.
I think I'll paint the back of the tank and along the top between the stripes with truck bedliner. It's really grippy and will not scratch or scuff when you lay down on the tank. I considered doing the knee dents too, but I don't think I will.

If you've got a good eye, you might see the wheel paint in the background. I used wheel clear on the tank, because it's tough as nails, and has a subtle metal flake to it.

Meh.....looks ok, I guess. :)

Glad to see it got there in one piece! Did you check out that Impulse I told you about?
