Long time lurker here. Picked up my bike April 5th 2012. It was a good day. SORRY FOR THE HUGE POST

Well like the title says I picked up a nice 73' CB200 for myself as my platform bike. Had been looking around CL for awhile for an older honda cb of Kawasaki ect... Finally cam across this beauty in all of its glory. I went and picked up the bike for a mere $550.00, It was running, had a minor oil leak, and came with a title. So I loaded it on the trailer and took it home to my garage.

Not before long I started to play around with the bike and figure out how I can get it running better. The PO had already replaced the coil, and throttle controls. Beyond that the bike seemed to have been modified from owners before that. It was missing side covers, airboxes had been replaced with crap filters, exhaust pipes were non origional, carbs were from a cb175, kickstand bent, engine and tank rattle canned, and handlebars had been cut and welded for lower profile. I knew I was getting myself into a project.

So I started planning out how I was going to fix up this bike. I rebuilt the carbs and gave them a nice soak in carb cleaner and reattached them to the bike. After some fiddling around I had the bike riding fine, but it was still not operating like it should. Bogging down around 5/6k rpm although the acceleration was quite quick for a cb200. So I pulled the carbs again and checked the float heights. Sure enough they were off so I readjusted and ended up with setting them back to stock height. After getting nowhere in making it run smoother after 2 days or so I decided to check my compression. I had around 110psi in each cylinder. I knew it was time for a top end rebuild.

So I pulled the engine and dove in head first with my manual at my side. 7 hours later I had my engine torn apart down to the crankcase. Cylinders seemed to be in good condition, but it was obvious this engine has never seen a rebuild. So today I sent my cylinders out to get bored .25 over, and my valves out to get grinded and lapped.

Before all of this engine madness, the PO had told me that I should probably replace the brake and clutch cable on the bike. So I ordered a new brake and clutch cable, but they arrived and the threads were the wrong sizes.... Great... So I gave up on those cables and decided to build my own. I ordered braided stainless hose and 2mm braided steel wire. I cut to proper length and soldered on the boots. Reinstalled on the bike, and after about 6 hours had nice shiny new brake and clutch cables.

I also replaced the tires on the bike first thing because i knew if I were going to drive ANYWHERE I couldn't be driving with cracked tires. I put 100/90/18 on the rear and 90/90/18 on the front. In the process I also noticed the bolts for my chain/rear end tensioner were stripped, so I replaced them with some nice shiny new ones.

Now I am currently waiting on my engine to get back from the machinist, and hopefully I will have the bike rebuilt and running this weekend. Planning on doing a dry build before I do any real painting. Anything painted now will probably be sandblasted and powder coated this fall.

Re: A Dutchman's CB200 Build (FIRST BIKE/FIRST BUILD)

Well, I did not have time to work on the bike today, but yesterday I painted some of the engine components for mock up purposes. Seeing if I like them that color on the bike. At the end of the build I will sand blast and powder coat all the parts that I can, especially ones painted for mockup. Should have my engine back either tomorow or thursday... Hoping to have it running by the weekend! FINGERS CROSSED

Spark - CHECK
Compression - SOON TO BE CHECK
Mixture - MY ENEMY

Does anybody have any other advice as to what items I should make sure are operating properly before I tackle the mixture beast? AKA Carb tuning. I had read that I should check my valve timing, and I had previously bench synced my carbs. Is it good enough to bench sync the carbs? or Do I need to get or make a tester to sync them?

Re: A Dutchman's CB200 Build (FIRST BIKE/FIRST BUILD)

Another 200!!! Looking forward to seeing this build come along.

Re: A Dutchman's CB200 Build (FIRST BIKE/FIRST BUILD)

Well it looks like my bike will be out of commission for another 2 weeks or so while I am waiting on some more parts.... Found out that my valves and my valve stem seals need replacing.... Ordered new sets of valves off of ebay, and I ordered new valve stem seals from wemoto.com Anyways in the meantime I have been doing some mock up paint of the engine (Ideally I want to get it powdercoated instead of painted). So in the meantime I will probably be trying to accomplish some other projects on the bike. Thinking about moving the battery and possibly starting on my seat. We will see how busy I am these next couple of weeks. Other than that, Will probably keep cleaning up the bike and painting various parts.

Re: A Dutchman's CB200 Build (FIRST BIKE/FIRST BUILD)

Well I made lots of progress!!! At least I think so. I have gotten overly ambitious lately and decided to remove the unwanted tabs from my frame as well as the splash guard, and I am now ready to move forward with making my seat and relocating the electronics. The reason I had so much time today was because of this that came through town... Since I roof, it was a now work afternoon day. Here is the tornado and the progress I have made!

Re: My CB200 BUILD - *SEAT BUILDING TIME*

Well opened up the frame and am working on relocating the electronics. Have a sealed battery on order. Also gave my tank to a guy I know with a sandblaster and he is going to blast off the old paint for me. Will have the tank back by the end of the week. Will have my new electronics plate welded in by tomorrow, and will rewire tomorrow evening. After that I will be cutting my foam to make the shape of the seat that I want. Then its glassing time!

Re: My CB200 BUILD - *SEAT BUILDING TIME*

Welp I got some stuff done today. AND I have received lots of packages. Anyways, yesterday my buddy came over and we rewired my bike, then today I carved my seat foam. Might chop the seat down lower profile. (THOUGHTS?) My tank is stripped and ready to receive primer.

Things I have to put on the bike

Tach Oil Seal
Valve Stem Seals
Led Rear Brake Light
Led Rear turn signals
12v 7.5 AH Sealed battery
Flasher unit

Still waiting on my new valves...... Really want to get this engine back together.

Re: My CB200 BUILD - SEAT FINISHED - TIME FOR SOME PAINT

that seat looks great is this your first time making one? Do you have any good instructionals you followed to make it? Im not nearly to this point yet but doesnt hurt to think about it.

Re: My CB200 BUILD - SEAT FINISHED - TIME FOR SOME PAINT

What motorcycle are you making yours for? I was contemplating pulling a mould, but was too lazy.

Thanks! It was my first time making one. I did not follow any instructionals either... But what I did goes as follows.

Made foam model of my future seat from Floral Foam
Used packing tape over the top of floral foam to hold it down and act as release
Laid 2 layers of glass followed by quick body filler job to smooth it out
Laid 2 more layers of glass
Used Ban saw to even up the bottom and cut off the back
Covered the whole thing it fiberglass resin *just spread it like body filler, but much thinner*
Body Filler - let it set up
Sand
Body Filler
Sand
Body Filler
Sand
Touch up body filler
Sand up to 220 grit

To make sanding easy I used a angle grinder to get the big chunks, then used very course grit sandpaper with a sanding block to even out all the valleys and ridges. Then I used finergrit to take out the lines that the heavier grit made.

*Note - After I already glassed my seat I decided I did not like the shape and wanted to make a dunstall style seat. So I cut off the back of my seat and glassed it flat. Then I glassed a lip that overlapped the flat spot.

Also Ban-Saws are really helpful for trimming the fiberglass seat!

Re: My CB200 BUILD - SEAT FINISHED - TIME FOR SOME PAINT

i have a 72 cb350. I guess i have to get more comfortable using bondo that stuff is a B&%ch to sand down too. Impressive results in the pic thanks for the info bud

Re: My CB200 BUILD - SEAT FINISHED - TIME FOR SOME PAINT

I have been battling with paint... Doing it right with rattle can does take a few tries and a bit of work! Here is how everything looks mounted up on the bike. I currently have all the electrics FINISHED. WOOOHOOO all my LEDs work without any modification and I have labeled everything for easy install. Just waiting on my clear coat to dry before I am going to mount things on the bike.

anyways here are the pics of mock up

Re: My CB200 BUILD - SEAT FINISHED - TIME FOR SOME PAINT

In this next week it is my goal to mount rubber bumpers on my bars, to not damage the paint on my tank incase they get turned too far.
Looking to drill my disk brake as well this week.
Also going to paint my rims.
Mount everything excluding motor to the frame
Start fabricating seat pan for upholstery - Looking to use a pvc or plastic of some sort to mold to the shape of my seat cowl.

Re: My CB200 BUILD - Stupid Valves.... UPDATE: 5/23/12

PICTURES AT BOTTOM OF POST

Well I have everything wired up and have my seat and tank installed!!! WOOOHOO Still waiting on my valves to get in... I am probably going to start on my seat this next week, if my valves don't come.

TO DO LIST BEFORE I DRIVE
Still need to drill my disc brake.
Put on my racing numbers
Upholster my seat... we will see....
Replace my valves
Reassemble engine *The top end is basically brand new* New valves, new pistons and rings .25 over, bored and honed cylinders, new gaskets, tach oil seal.

CARBURETOR UPDATE
A few nights ago I also did some more work on my carbs. Set my float heights..... Hopefully it will be good to go. I had previously been running rich no matter what Adjustments *mixture, needle, etc...* I did. Hopefully because my intake valves were shot I can finally get my bike tuned properly. I should be running lean with no airbox, cb175 carbs, and no megaphones.

THOUGHTS ABOUT SEAT UPHOLSTERING
For upholstering my seat pan, I am thinking of using plastic sheet (pvc) and heating it up and forming it to the shape of my seat, to form a really good seat pan. Has anybody done this? Thoughts?

Sorry for the lack of build pictures... I am not very good at taking process pics....

But here is my seat all wired up with my tank on the bike. Rims have also been painted, as have controls and levers.
