My First 1974 cb450: Tabasco! [SOLD! "FIGHTER" THREAD UP!]

Re: My First 1974 cb450: Tabasco! *86% Complete*

Thanks guys! I haven't updated in a while but I got a few things done. I changed my plastic swing arm bushings to bronze ones and I mounted my gauges. I also remounted the rear sets to a lower position, but this is giving me some clearance problems with the exhaust. So either I'm going to try and make it work, or I'll have to fab up some cl inspired pipes.

Here are the smaller gauges. The left light doesn't work. I checked the wires and they're fine but it could be the bulb.

Old bushings removed. It wasn't so bad as I thought it would be.

Bushings being pressed in. I got this idea from a member on the board. Thanks!

Bushings installed.

New rear set mounts.

The new riding position. I was thinking about bending the levers out a bit and shortening the linkage levers. That might help with the clearance issue. If not I'll have to come up with my own pipes. What do you guys think?

Nice work on the RS mounts.

Where did you get the bushings?

Re: My First 1974 cb450: Tabasco! *86% Complete*

I like those rear sets mounted that way, looks as if the passenger peg brackets were made to be rear set brackets! Clean look, your almost there!

Re: My First 1974 cb450: Tabasco! *86% Complete*

Thanks guys!
The rearset idea was borwazie's :).

A possible solution for my rearset clearance problem is to go with straight pipes. If it won't work with the slash cut mufflers, I'm going to weld a 2 inch extension to the end ofthe headers which will turn down. I'll be adding a homemade baffle in it as well to add back pressure. What do you guys think?

You're definitely in the home stretch. That thing is looking killer. I think you may have hit 89% here. Just keep pushing brother, almost pay-off time.

Re: My First 1974 cb450: Tabasco! *86% Complete*

Thanks for the reminder. Bronze bushings ordered........

Re: My First 1974 cb450: Tabasco! *86% Complete*

Really nice job. Those clocks look super on there. You really did get a killer deal. Riding position is much better, IMO. However, remember you are sitting on the seat rails. Have you tried it with you seat yet? A couple of inches can make a difference.
I have a thought about the covers on the engine. I'm back and forth on the white and I think Chris mentioned them a while back. I think the thing is for me they really draw attention. That's not a bad thing, but why not add some black lettering to break them up a bit and if your eye gets drawn there you might as well have something more to look at?? Maybe some kind of cool logo or lettering? That just my .02
You have done such an awesome job so far. I think the bike looks really sharp! Keep it up.

Re: My First 1974 cb450: Tabasco! *86% Complete*

Thanks Troy!

I appreciate the input. This may sound lazy but I'm going to leave the covers as or is. There's so much more I can do to improve the bike but I just want to start wrapping it up so I can start riding soon. I'm still hung up on the exhaust. There are cl pipes on eBay, but I'm really thinking about welding some turn outs on the ends of my headers, baffling them and calling it a day. The money spent would probably be about the same since I'll have to buy a wire welder. The cl pipes would look awesome, but I might just stick with the turn outs unless I can find a good deal on high pipes.

To get the bushings out, I chiseled the plastic ones out. I also used a hacksaw to slit the bearings the. Chisel it out even more. It was a mess but it went quickly.

Re: My First 1974 cb450: Tabasco! *86% Complete*

Unless you just have to weld the turndowns on, you don't need a wire welder! Turndowns welded on will also make it impossible to remove/replace/modify your baffles! To make the baffles the way I did you use a simple torch welding/brazing method, no welder needed. Turndowns (if you feel they are necessary) could be slid on and held with a spring fastener on the backside. This may solve several dilemmas for you. I hope it does!

Cheers

What twistedwheelz said. I think that is the way to go, unless you're wanting to spend money on a welder or if you want cl pipes, etc, etc.... But if you want quick, simple, low cost then use the spring.

The covers are cosmetic. I agree about leaving them if you are really itching to ride. I know I'm ready to see this thing on the road. anyhow, later if you decide you want to do something with them it would be easy to do.

Re: My First 1974 cb450: Tabasco! *86% Complete*

Also, you run into other probs with CL pipes. I am going to have to make my rearset stick out a little further than normal so my leg isn't up against the pipes the whole time. I don't know how Troy handled this, or his pipes might be tighter against the frame. I also have the stock muffler on it and the heat shield bulges out to go around it right where my leg will be.

Re: My First 1974 cb450: Tabasco! *86% Complete*

Thanks for the heads up guys! I'm defintely going with tWisted's idea. I'm going to leave off the turndowns for now but I'll definitely be making baffles.

Mike, thanks for pointing out the clearance issue with the cl pipes. My bike will be a work in progress so maybe I'll build a new exhaust for it in the future.

Troy, you'll get to see this thing on the road soon. I promise!

So all that's left is to hook up the rearsets, make the baffles, fire up and tune. Hopefully there won't be anymore problems. The rearset position is pretty comfortable with the seat. I'll get a picture up soon!

Re: My First 1974 cb450: Tabasco! *89% Complete*

Very nice man.

I know you're tight on funds like I am, but if you ever want to make a purchase or have the means, then buy a welder. It's such a giant step towards making things go out of this world. Imaginations the limit!

Great build man. That bike fits you like a glove. keep 'em coming!

Re: My First 1974 cb450: Tabasco! *89% Complete*

Thanks a lot Kanticoy!

I do plan to buy a welder, but not right now until I can lower my debt a little. I'll most likely have one by the time I start my next project haha. :D

Alright fellas, not much of an update from last time but I was able to make the copper baffles and now they're installed. I have yet to hear what they sound like. Here are a few pictures:

New riding position. The tank and the seat pan aren't securely mounted yet so they're a little off line. I match with my bike!

I like this picture, but I wish the background wasn't my garage lol.

Today I hooked up the shifter side, but I'm going to need the new piece that bites onto the shifter shaft because I ground all the teeth off because I had trouble slipping it on. Yes, stupid, but another one is on it's way.

Next thing to do is get some oil and spark plugs, fill 'er up, then test fire. I still haven't polished up the side covers yet, but they'll be on soon. Another thing I have to do is make the tail light bracket, which I will make this week.

On a side note, my motorcycle classes are starting this weekend! When or If I pass (hehe ha ha) I'm going to make an appointment at the DMV to register my bike and get my motorcycle license. I'm so stoked!

ALMOST THERE!
GOD BLESS YOU ALL!
