My First 1974 cb450: Tabasco! [SOLD! "FIGHTER" THREAD UP!]

Re: My First 1974 cb450: Tabasco! *95% Complete* SHE'S ALIVE!!

Riding it and no new photos? :( Just kidding bro. Congrats, glad to hear she is somewhat on the road. But it might be time for a show n shine ;D
I really think just letting it idle would not make the pipes glow unless there is an underlying problem. If it's not done it since then maybe, but I doubt it. It could be a timming issue or a jet issue and I wonder about the baffles. If they are creating enough back pressure that you have unburnt fuel. Well, its just a thought. But anyway it could be a combination of things. If it continues than I'd be a little concerned to run it very much. I'd say jetting the cabs should help. And just for kicks I'd remove the baffles (if its easy to do) just to see what it does.
Again, Congratulations bud!

Re: My First 1974 cb450: Tabasco! *95% Complete* SHE'S ALIVE!!

Thanks Troy!

I got it running, but there's so much left to do. I'm going to up the jet sizes to either 150 or 155 to see if that helps any. I might have to up the slow jets as well. I believe back pressure is made when there are baffles. I read that straights don't have much back pressure because there aren't any baffles, I could be wrong. And I also read that red pipes can mean too advanced timing. I'll have to check that out.

My bike doesn't start up on the first crank/kick either, so does that strenthen the idea that I have a timing issue or a fuel issue? Or both?

Re: My First 1974 cb450: Tabasco! *95% Complete* SHE'S ALIVE!!

Good news guys:

I hooked up the old tach and my throttle is pretty snappy! I'm idling around 1,300 rpms and a twist of the throttle brings me up to 4k easy. As far as the bike having difficulty starting, I removed the fuel filter from the right carb fuel line because it caused it to become pinched, therefor fuel wasn't getting into that carb. Once I got fuel into that carb, she fired up.

I'm going to hook up the old tach back because I can read the rpms a lot better with it. As far as a speedo, I'll be running digital bike speedo as well. I'll get that acewell speedo/tach in the future.

I don't think my bike is running lean either. The garage has a good smell of burned gas after idling the bike. The pipes haven't been red either. The only downside is that the wraps turned from white to yellowish orange. I think that was from the clearcoat I sprayed on to protect the wrap unfortunately it will remain that way until I get some riding under my belt :).

This bike is by no means perfect, but it does function quite well and I'm lucky to have it as a first bike. The show n shine will be up after I get a few things sorted out.

Oh and I have a squeaky front brake lol.

Man, I gotta say you really know how to just get in and get dirty Big props! I really like what you've done. Update us already!

Re: My First 1974 cb450: Tabasco! *95% Complete* SHE'S ALIVE!!

Hey cookiemonster, I really appreciate the kind words! I've been learning how to get this thing running so I haven't really updated.

I'm currently waiting on my aftermarket coils to arrive. After I install them I'll be confident to take the bike out on the real streets. I'm also sorting out which tail light i want to run. I want something like the Iron 883 tail light, which is two red lense turn signals that also serve as a running light. The tail light I currently have sucks.

I also made a new shifter lever because the bearing popped out of it while I was riding. No bueno! It's been long overdue for an update but it'll surely come!

Hey man, I just read through your build from where I left off a few months ago... The bike looks great!!

Re: My First 1974 cb450: Tabasco! *95% Complete* SHE'S ALIVE!!

Thank you all!

Well it's been a long time since I last updated but I just recently sold Tabasco to a really good friend of mine. I wanted a more modern bike, something that I wouldn't be afraid riding because it might die in me. The bike rode strong but would die every now and then. My friend loves the bike and he rode it home last night with only one stall because he was unfamiliar with the clutch. He even rode it to work today with no problems and he told me a lot of people stopped to look at the bike, which makes me really happy. As much as I liked the bike it was also time for me to move on. I currently purchased an 89 cbr600 Hurricane that run excellent. It's in need of a facelift, which I am looking forward too. I'll be posting a build thread in the fighter section soon, so be sure to check it out! Building the cafe was a great experience for me and I would love to do it again in the future.

Thanks to all on DTT who helped me with this build. Flug and CCRider practically walked me through my problems that I encountered with this build. SUPA BIG PROPS!

Re: My First 1974 cb450: Tabasco! [SOLD! FIGHTER BUILD SOON TO COME!]

so sad you sold that bike it was sick.
i saw that comment a while ago that you were gonna sell it but i didn't want to believe it, i hope you made profit and didn't have to pay yourself less than minimum wage to do it.
now thats out of the way i did the same thing with my first wvo or grease-car its one way to go. you learn a ton about it then get your money back and start on something new. but it took me 70,000 miles to get bored of my benz i just wanted to see a few months worth of you draggin your knee on the bike that you built.
at least you kept it in the family (selling it to a friend) ill check on the fighter i hear that hurricane is awesome. you should totally name it Ruben carter or RB

Oh man! I'm sorry to see her go, but I understand. I'm glad your friend is enjoying it. You built a beauty!

You are welcome for the help..... any time. It seemed that you always had the same problem I had just gone through.

My dream bike is an early Interceptor. Those things are rad. I can definitely see the attraction to the hurricane. Good luck and keep us posted!

Re: My First 1974 cb450: Tabasco! [SOLD! FIGHTER BUILD SOON TO COME!]

the 89 cbr600 Hurricane is a sick bike! i used to have a smoking Joe eddition CBR600... stupid fast! so what are your plans with the 89? i am working on a 96 FZR 600 doing a naked/streetfighter combo with my own twist to it... be nice to have another person wrenching on a old rocket to bounce ideas off of
