I'm confused; what is that diamond plate covering up on the right side on the motor? Nice to see a T120 on the board :)

That is the ARD Magneto.
I dont have an original ARD Mag cover for it...Next to impossible to get...

Correction; they WERE impossible to find, now they're just expensive. MAP is reproducing ARD mag timing covers. They're selling them w/ new Hunt mags. Call em' up, maybe they'd sell you just the piece you need.Here ya go;

* this post is not directed at LeOn, since you seem to have a "handle" on it, but to the folks out there who may be confused*

And while I'm correcting stuff, the shifter in question is NOT a jockey or a sucide. Its just a hand shift.

The term jockey shift refers to the position of the shift lever being below and behind the rider, like a horse jockey's crop. Not to be confused with a tank shifter, wich rides in a "gate" on the gas tank. Almost always on the left side, sometimes in the center. Both of these types were usually coupled with a foot clutch. On early americian big twins the foot clutch was a heel/toe opperation. To engage the clutch, the rider would rock his heel back and the clutch would stay out, allowing the rider to put both feet on the ground. When the light turns green, the rider rocks the shifter foward to take off.

The term "sucide" refers to a home made foot clutch, with no hold in place action. They got the name from the difficulty in riding this set up. Although its not that hard to learn. Just shift to neutral before you stop. Side note; if your planning on fabbing up a sucide clutch its very important to make a stop at the end of the range of movement, otherwise you'll rip the end off the cable.

A clutch lever on the shift handle is lazy and looks retarded.

There are examples of european light weights that used hand shifters on the left, but they're impact on choppers is minamal, and they were never intended to be hotrods.

Don't believe me? look it up.

ahhhh.. I KNEW there was a difference but I never really looked it up...

BTW.. Thanks for the link to MAP cycles.. I looked up the ARD cover and it says that its out of stock... I guess Im gonna have to make a cover ...

Glad to hear that your not gonna run the diamond plate. I really hate that stuff on bikes. Looks great for truck boxes and inside racing trailers, just not on bikes. My thoughts on customizing, it should be so well done, it doesen't look custom(if that makes any sense). And to see that stuff on a bike, man, it looks exactly like what it is. A home-made piece. Sorry for the rant.
Anyway, I've had pretty good results with using a jig saw to cut 1/4 alloy plate. Just clamp it to the bench real good and go slow. Rounding out the edges or some other custom touch might class it up a little.

Heres a speedo bracket I made for a friend. I used a wooden dowell and some valve lapping compound to do the "engine turning" Not bad for $7.00 eh?

Stardate DEC 30/09 Just a quick update....

We got the ARD MAG running... I couldnt believe the spark that comes out of that thing!!...
Rebuilt it with new coil, points and condensors...

Fired up the motor for a sec and found major knocking...

.. Took apart the heads and found that the left piston is fucked among other things.. :(
Looks like the motor is going to have to go through a complete rebuild...

Oh well...

Pics to come soon...

ahh sorry to hear that, but glad to hear you have spark! that is a plus! rebuild that sucker nad you will be golden for 100k :)

Yeah.. I agree.. If you have to break into the cases, may as well rebuild it one and do it right...

just some pics of the progress thus far...
The motor is completely apart... Jugs honed and painted, heads all blasted, valve covers cleaned.. the tranny all rebuild, pistons and rings came in today.

The motor will be back together and in the bike by next week.

looking good!

not really... The motor was in such bad shape, tranny gears put on backwards, exhaust cam was hammer smashed from the previous owner or builder trying to get it out, (and failed), the rockers were unseated, oil pump was siezed, on and on... and on... it was pathetic.

It looked liked the motor was just slapped together by a 10 year old...

Things are not so bad. Now you have the oppertunity to make it really right. Did you clean the sludge trap?

oh yeah.. and "sludge trap" was an under statement.. It was pretty darn blocked... Good for another 80,000 Kms...

Let there be SPARK!!..

Well the bike is 90% back together again!!...
Before final assembly, we tested the ARD Magneto for spark!!..
With the rebuilt MAG, (new coils, points, condensors..), it would be a shame to put it all back together again and not find spark... which was the original problem when I got the bike...

Triumph GrandMaster at work...
