"Patina" The 1973 CB175 Cafe Racer

Re: "Patina" The 1973 CB175 Cafe Racer

I wanna get jetting back stock with filters and see what happens. Problem is it appears there are various jetting standards for k models.

Re: "Patina" The 1973 CB175 Cafe Racer

I using this one. Apparently it's only valid through the K4

Aha! Simo you're right.

In this one...valid through K7, which is what you posted I think.

WOW! Can you tell me where you found that? Very interesting indeed. Although I though some carbs had different float height settings as well?

Sorry I just saw this...been traveling for work and must not have seen it!

Re: "Patina" The 1973 CB175 Cafe Racer

Definitive answer. I have the 644A carb. It takes a 90 main, 38 pilot, needle clip 4th from the top, idle mixture screw 1.25 turns from seated.

I'll start there.

Re: "Patina" The 1973 CB175 Cafe Racer

Do I measure float height from the gasket surface or from the little lip above it?

I've always taken it as the notch in the carb body
Also the jet numbers are based on a stock set up from filter to muffler. The cl was set up for 'torque' :D the cb for top end speed :D

Ok I think I know what you're talking about. There's a cutout on the "ledge" there. Maybe? I'll post up a pic tomorrow.

Agree that those are based on a stick setup. However something is way off, so I'm going to replace with all new jets. It should at least start up and run halfway decent. It won't be perfect but at least I'll know that my jets weren't drilled out at some point, and that they're the size they should be. Also, my float height was way off, ha.

Float height is from the gasket surface to the top of the float. Ignore the tiny ridge in the middle of the gasket surface if it has one. If the needle has a spring loaded pin in it, measure with the pin at full extension.

Good advice to clean the carbs (again? Apologies, did not see elaboration on you cleaning the carbs, might have missed it) and comparing carb cleaner streams in the slow speed circuit. Check especially air inlet to pilot and main systems. You have to see clearly carb cleaner blasting into the pilot jet and emulsion tube wells. The emulsion tubes (#9, main jet holder) absolutely have to be removed and cleaned. Can't tell you how many carbs I have been given that were "professionally cleaned and rebuilt I guarantee you they are perfect and not the issue" that were anything but clean and the only issue!

Might be good to re-check the valve lash just to eliminate it too.

Sorry my bad the stock 175 carbs have the notch offset, the pw22's on my bike have the notch set in the center so they're aligned with the emulsion tube
But jb möbius is correct gasket face of the carb body minus the gasket
If you want to be doubly sure you could make something like this

Thanks very much for your feedback. Can you point out where the air inlet is to the main and pilot circuits? Also, the last time I cleaned the carbs, i ultrasonic cleaned them after complete disassembly.

However I didn't spray cleaner through the two little vents on the underside of the carb body. Other than that I ultrasonic cleaned the jets and main jet holder as well. I can certainly do that again though.

that float level there,(in the pitchur) looks quite a bit too high

Re: "Patina" The 1973 CB175 Cafe Racer

Yeah I mean I'm really OCD...I'm about 100% sure I got it into every passage. Through every hole. Cleaned every jet. Only thing I didn't triple check was the vents in the float area.

Yeah it's not the right carb, heights wrong & carb isn't at the right angle , the pic is to show the tube attached to the bowl drain

Re: "Patina" The 1973 CB175 Cafe Racer

Cleaned the carbs again, all passages were clear. Some debris in the pilot jet but not a lot. Set floats to 21mm. Bike cranked on choke but never stopped spewing smoke. Smoked, smoked, smoked, especially immediately upon letting off the throttle.

I'm done guessing, I'm taking the head off to make sure that dang O-ring is in there.
