The term "noisy valves" has to come from somewhere. Doesn't it?
well yeah, but having them slightly on the loose side is not going to magically "hammer" damage upon them, otherwise the race cams could not be set looser than a stocker
a race motor lives at high revs after all and will have more radical lift and ramps as a rule

Yeah I guess what I'm saying is that at "bang" both your valves are closed and not on the "lobes." Why couldn't you adjust all 4 at TDC there? You're saying you want to adjust the exhaust right before "suck" and the intake right before blow...?

no only one side will be at TDC at a time.

you want to adjust the valves when the follower is full and well onto the base circle of the cam ,the base circle of the cam is ground perfecly concentric with the axis of the cam
your cam i believe has lobes 180 out from #1 #2 so one side will be on overlap when the other is on tdc comp stroke, which has followers well planted dead center on the base circle

Ok I've been watching a 4 stroke GIF thinking this through for 10 mins lol.

What's the reason for running at .006" instead of .003" then?
lift lotsa lift lol

But why not just lower the lift on the cam rather than widen the gap?
because we want to go faster...lol

We have different goals. I'm still on the "lets get this thing running right" thing

The effect is the same, though, no? Widening the gap changes the timing and the lift; both of which can be controlled with the slope and height on the cam. I don't understand the reasons for messing with the clearance instead of just going with a different grind.

that is a good question but I am just telling you what my cam card says...

Re: "Patina" The 1973 CB175 Cafe Racer

I think I know why...when I originally set the tappet on the Megacycle cam I set it to .002" and the cam wouldn't turn over. So would that be because of the ramp of the lobe?

at high rpm's and with higher lift and higher stresses and higher friction/heat on the follower it needs to have the rest time and space and time for a cooling film of erl
plus the need is to be sure absolutely that the valve has quality seat time

you are right they are wasting time and effort fudging valve clearance

Is there a special tool for this square head nut or just use a crescent wrench?
